Faf, Damian return for Boks

Allister Coetzee has kept faith in the side that recorded a narrow win over Australia at Loftus over the weekend, making just two injury-enforced changes to his team for Saturday’s test against the All Blacks in Durban.

Scrumhalf Rudy Paige is out with concussion, meaning a recall for Faf de Klerk, who will need to atone for a rather iffy showing against the same opponents back in Christchurch. Jesse Kriel is also out injured this week, with Damian de Allende coming in at inside centre and Jean de Jongh shifting outside to accommodate. Bryan Habana and Fracnoic Hougaard swap sides this week, with Habana on the left and Hougaard the right.

Coetzee has again backed a 6-2 split on the bench, with Willem Alberts and Jaco Kriel both providing different styles of loose forward cover.

South Africa: 15 Pat Lambie, 14 Francois Hougaard, 13 Juan de Jongh, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Morne Steyn, 9 Faf de Klerk, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Oupa Mohoje, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Vincent Koch, 2 Adriaan Strauss (captain), 1 Tendai Mtawarira
Substitutes: 16 Bongi Mbonambi, 17 Steven Kitshoff, 18 Julian Redelinghuys, 19 Lood de Jager, 20 Willem Alberts, 21 Jaco Kriel, 22 Lionel Mapoe, 23 Willie le Roux

  • Well at least AC’s team selection is fairly consistent. Bout time some of those players start rewarding the coach’s faith in them. Still dont understand the 6/2 bench split…guess Jaco Kriel is a backline reserve too.

  • I prefer our centre combination here more so than any other with season. At least these 2 know each other and have formed a solid midfield pairing in the past. I feel that Alberts has proven to be more of an asset than Mohoje and would have swapped them around. Louw had a good game against the Aussies so suppose he deserves another go. Glad he put Habana back on his wing too. This backline looks more settled than the one we saw go on tour.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 27) : interesting reading. Must agree on a lot of things. Only thing I’d like to add is it’s way easier for NZ to keep players like Barrit and co as the difference between NZ dollar and Euro/Pound is not nearly as big as between the Rand and Euro/Pound so their potential earnings will not increase as much as for SA players.

Think their fitness levels is also a major reason for their success.
    Execute the basics 100%.
Become the fittest team in world rugby. (Remember kitch christie wanted the boks to be the fittest team at the ’95rwc.that was 21 years ago.why are the boks no longer there?what happened in the interim?).
    Convert every penalty,drop,conversion attempt.

  • @50shadesofshark3 (Comment 40) : For me fitness and conditioning is a big problem in Sa rugby…we seem to favour big bulky guys that can crash and bash a few times or guys that can step a few times but after a few minutes either player is tired and cant bash or step. SA players need to take a big step up in fitness and conditioning to play the full game at the pace required. The fitter a player is the less he is sucking oxygen and the more accurate his passing, catching etc will be.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 43) : I did assume they earned more now. But would be interesting to compare the different salaries compared to the standard of living costs etc in the respective countries. I think SA was very quick to jump into the professional era but since then the improvement has been very slight where as i think new zealand took a bit of time to adapt to professional rugby but the structures etc they put in place has seen there progession increase at a much higher rate.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 33) : yes I get that and agree with it. NZ players looks like they play the situation rather than a set plan.
What I was referring to in the article is the reasoning for SA using overseas based players vs NZ not. It’s not as easy as saying more players will stay in SA if they don’t select overseas based players for the Bokke.

  • @JD (Comment 45) : I do agree with the second part of your comment. In regards to the article so much is always made of the Bok game plan being this or that. There shouldnt be a set in stone plan. Players should play the situation in front of them bearing in mind the areas they have talked about attacking the opposition etc. We need to step away from this game plan focus and rather focus on the individual skills and execution

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 38) : @SheldonK (Comment 39) : once again don’t compare SA and NZ directly it’s a way over simplification of things. I don’t know how much NZ players earn so I’m only commenting on my own personal position.
When comparing living wage (what an average person needs to earn to live) in NZ with SA I found you could live with aprox 50 000 NZ dollars where as you needed to earn aprox R80 000. As you will see it was a good 10 years ago and I know you will need to earn a bit more now but I don’t think things changed all that much and to “live” you can get away with earning a smaller NZ Dollar amount than Rand.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 46) :The thing is that Safas dont like to play whats infront of them. From a young age they want to be told what to do and when to do what.I completly agree with your philosiphy about rather playing the situation like the AB’s do.But what i do know and Nick Mallet has said it before is that Safas for some reason like to plan every single phase they have e.g they play it phase for phase and each player knowing where the ball should go to even if its after 5 phases . Thats what i call a typical structured Springbok style of play. The modern way to play is like you said where after set piece is finished the team should play whats infront of them and not to a certain pre-meditated pattern. However I believe the boks have tried to play this modern way of play and I dont think we should keep playing like that.We should rather play to a structured pre-meditated game plan like we did in the past.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 46) : yes I’m 110% with you but it’s not as easy as it sounds. You know the conditioning thing where dog getting a treat every time the bell rings? SA rugby is the same. Players starts in Primary school with coaches wanting to use the “big” kid to win games and set game plans in place to ensure it happens.
Players needs to “be trained” to play with vision and that starts at age 10 not when he playes for the Sharks or Bokke.

  • @schrodingers cat (Comment 49) : The problem starts from a young age and filters all the way through to the Boks. Coaches give specific instructions to players and want the players to only do that so that errors are limited. Sa rugby from a very young age is all about winning and not making mistakes. Mistakes at any level are heavily criticised even if a player is trying something or reacting to whats in front of them. So the SA public are as much to blame as the coaches. If we want players to learn to play whats in front of them and back their skills then we need to learn to accept mistakes from a young age…unfortunately in the current SA environment that just doesnt look possible

  • @schrodingers cat (Comment 52) : @SheldonK (Comment 51) :P ersonally I believe you need a game plan BUT it needs to be adaptable to changing circumstances. That’s a thing I think Ackers is doing with the Lions and I’d like to see more senior sides do.
Two quick examples that actually happens:
    1. A move is called to the right (or left) but the scrum totally turns in the wrong direction. 8 & 9 now play against the turn and put a huge amount of pressure on them and rest of backs but the call was made and they WILL do the play whereas they could have changed it and played with the turn.
    2. A side is defending (or looking for territory) and need to kick. Without looking the player just kicks even with a 2 or 3 player overlap.

It’s actually quite simple; Hougie has a new tattoo on his left thigh, so the coach what’s him running down the right side of the field so that the tattoo is always on display to the played on his inside. That way, when an All Black comes in to tackle him, they might see the tattoo and mistake him for one of their own. Genius.

  • @schrodingers cat (Comment 52) : I think changes need to be made BUT the changes need to be small incremental changes built ontop of each other. What we definitely dont need is the normal SA approach of scrap everything and then try to rebuild Rome from scratch ignoring everything that was done well. The Boks were and can be very good at the scrum, lineout and driving maul. They can disrupt at the tackle and breakdown area and hit hard with their big forwards. We have never had amazing steppers and offloaders in the backline but our best backline players were good quick thinkers with good hands and a turn of speed. So lets build on that.

  • This may not be popular opinion but currently the Boks need Morne Steyn at 10 and Pat Lambie at 15. Both those guys give calmness, experience and stability in those positions. The team then needs to start to take shape around them. So get stability in the 8 and 9 positions and the 12 and 13 positions where we arent sure who the best combo is. Once that is done solidified then we can swap out the 10 and 15 for players that are perhaps more exciting. But trying to figure out your 8 and 9 and 12 and 13 whilst you have a guy at 10 and 15 trying to also figure things out for themselves is just recipe for disaster. Damien McKenzie is a great player, had a fantastic super rugby season…but did anyone see what the All Black back 3 looked like when he came on last week? All helter skelter and no composure. Now imagine he had inexperience around him at the same time…he had experience because the All Blacks know better. Just my thoughts.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 66) : about us not having enough steppers in the backline i think we do but in todays game it is to hard to beat a defender with a sidestep.Look at De jongh for example …..he is regarded as one of the best steppers in the world but is not as effective anymore becuase the modern day defense is so much stronger than 10 years ago another example is Quade Cooper who we all know was the worlds best sidestepper but know he cant defeat a defender with his step anymore? Its much easier for Julian Savea to run over someone than to run around them . the modern day thing is having big pacific islanders in the backline that run over players .We are the only country with small wings/backs and were falling behind in that department.Think its time we import some pacific islanders at wing or we move guys like AE to the wing

  • @schrodingers cat (Comment 70) : I get your point about modern defense regarding steppers. My point was more that in years gone by we havtn had great ‘steppers’ in our backlines and our best backline players werent ‘sidesteppers’ and flashy offloaders. The use of big wingers by the New Zealanders and some other countries is a result of them believing that the space out wide is very limited these days due to the good defense so they need a player who can dominate the contact is a small space and is also tall to compete for cross kicks..all whilst still having speed. It is an effective way to play…i do believe there are ways to utilise smaller wingers though.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 74) : I may be mistaken but im sure Coetzee played a lot of rugby at 10 in his younger days? Lions a bit spoilt for choice in the backs but i reckon the best backline would be 9. DeKlerk 10. Jantjies 11. Volminck 12. Van Rensburg 13. Mapoe 14. Skosan 15. Combrinck. Bench: Cronje, Van Der Walt, Coetzee
Also depends what kind of form Harold Vorster returns in.

  • Not a bad side – Aaron Smith is a massive loss, he gets the Blacks on the front foot, he is so quick to all the breakdowns. I think the boks must try to pressure Perenara, he is strong and clever but no where near as quick Smith.

Something that seems to be lacking in current sa players is that fire and aggression…the current crop are a bunch of softies i have to say. And yes i would say that to their faces. Some of these kids playing have played their whole rugby career having proper rucking banned…can you imagine some of todays players being on the wrong side of a ruck back then…
