Interesting choices ahead of BaaBaa’s game

The Springboks open their tour of Europe with a match against the Barbarians, which would have been an ideal match to get combinations going ahead of much trickier fixtures, but that will not happen.

The Barbarians game falls outside of the IRB International window, meaning the Boks will not be able to select any overseas based players. Not such a bad thing, if you think about it, but looking at it closely, it will then also exclude players currently in Japan.

A total of 14 of the current 31 players in the Bok Squad will not be available for this match. That’s almost an entire starting line up of stars not interested in playing within South Africa, or who are based in South Africa who do not want to play Currie Cup rugby.

News24 reports that the following players all miss out on selection for this match:

Willem Alberts
Johan Goosen
Bryan Habana
Francois Hougaard
Elton Jantjies
Steven Kitshoff
Vincent Koch
Jaco Kriel
Willie le Roux
Francois Louw
Lionel Mapoe
Franco Mostert
Morne Steyn
Warren Whiteley

A few key areas are almost bare if the above list is taken into account. All of Alberts, Kriel, Louw and Whiteley leave the loose trio with only Oupa Mohoje to pick, while the flyhalf and fullback cupboard is bare without Goosen, Jantjies and Steyn.

Might this be a blessing in disguise to force Allister Coetzee in taking a young side and unearthing new players? My opinion, the amount of changes into the match and following it into the England clash will not bode well for the Springboks. Accepting a Barbarians encounter a week before the biggest clash of the tour against England is not helping their plight.

  • Add to this that Lood de Jager will also not be available for the match, it’s actually 15 of the current squad…

  • Well pat covers flyhalf, so only 13 more issues to sort out.

  • I would seriously select an SA A side for this game and let Ackermann coach it. I see no point in patching a Bok side together only to change it the following week. Also the overseas based guys will only arrive if anything the monday before the Eng test- not great prep. So either select the SA A side to play the Baabaas or only select a locally based side to play all the end of year tests.

Good point yes.. And it should be interesting to see how it pans out.

If our brains trust could only think out of the little box they find themselves, maybe options like these would become reality…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 3) : Agreed. No use in trying to make something from this game although we could expose some new faces to international rugby even if it’s against the Baabaas. I’m hoping for some fringe players(like RJvR) to get a chance to show why they deserve to be in the 23 as well. The problem with using the Baabaas to judge players ability is that it’s a very friendly, loose game.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : but . With Goosen and Willie Le roux missing out , we could play Lambie at 10 , Kriel at 15 and have RjVR on the bench .

  • @Zibbie (Comment 15) : @SheldonK (Comment 13) : The CC doesn’t really provide you with a lot of good options there at the moment. Maybe the backup FH from Kwasse? Andre Swart I think? Showed a lot of promise and made an impact every time he came on.

  • @Quintin (Comment 17) : id maybe go with one of the province FH’s . Van der walt kicks badly and doesnt control the back line as well as that other flyhalf the Lions used in Super rugby .

  • @Quintin (Comment 17) : Yeh not a lot of options, especially if you consider the ‘form’ players didnt really do much during super rugby. Yeh i know the guy you talking about from the Kwas..i was impressed but probably more impressed with their 12 Clinton Swarts- he wouldnt be the worst bench option..but then again a guy like Burger Odendaal has probably dont more to warrant a spot

  • @Zibbie (Comment 19) : Van Der Walt is probably a better fullback than 10 to be honest. Not too many 10s sticking their hand up in CC. Tiaan Schoeman maybe

I think Lambie should give Hargreaves a call to get advice:

  • @Quintin (Comment 25) : Schoeman is a player with a lot of talent and ive seen him improving quite steadily. He is still fairly young but if he continues to improve he is a possible option. Not much else out there in the CC

  • I’d say play guys who are in need of some match practice currently in the squad ie Redelinghuys, Lambie. Then build a SA A team round those guys and play some enterprising exhibition rugby. Try to get some joy into our players before what is going to be a tough tour.

  • How do you pick a tour squad when half the squad is only available after the first game…pick a group that only goes to the first game and then goes home?

  • Just a random Friday morning thought – what great incentive for the Currie cup winners of this year to play against the Baabaas as the SA A team?
