Talk of reinforcements for Sharks

I was all set to start writing some pieces about the state of the Sharks squad and trying to work out where there might be depth issues ahead of next year. Before I do that, though, I wanted to share some news about potential new signings that might change the picture a little.

Please note that while all of what follows has been reported in the national news, I’ve not yet had confirmation from the Sharks. Until such time as I do, treat this with the appropriate caution.

We already know that this year’s Junior Springbok skipper, Jeremy Ward, will join the Sharks in 2017. That signing, at least, is confirmed. It appears that the Sharks have opted to pick up an additional centre, with Namibian and Leopards midfielder Johan Deysel looking set to (finally) make it to Durban on a full-time basis. Deysel played in pre-season as a Sharks loan player, but was never contracted due, we understand, to budgetary issues. That appears to no longer be the case and Rapport claims Deysel will be a Sharks player for the next two years.

Also on the list is former WP and Stormers winger Kobus van Wyk, who is currently playing out a loan stint for Bordeaux in France. 24-year-old van Wyk is a powerful winger who played for the Junior Boks in 2012 and has some Super Rugby experience to his name.

Another of Ward’s teammates, utility forward Jacques Vermeulen, is the third player who has apparently signed for the Sharks. This 20 year old, who stand 1.97m tall, already has three Currie Cup caps (and two tries) for Western Province, and played for the Junior Springboks at the Under 20 championships in both 2014 and 2015. He’s comfortable at both blind side flank and lock.

It has also been suggested that the Sharks might pick up Griquas pivot Clinton Swart for Super Rugby – but that would possibly only be on a loan basis if it were to happen.

  • I gather that Ward is an outside centre, so we have him and AM to cover 13. Andre and who is next in line to play 12? Clearly nobody rates Williams so is it possibly Marius Louw? Or possibly why Deysel is being signed!

Think van Wyk will make a nice addition should he arrive (uninjured please) however aren’t we loading up with wingers (when we need fullbacks). On our books we have Mvovo, Odwa, Sithole, Mjekevu, Maritz, Nkosi and possibly van Wyk.

  • @Hulk (Comment 1) : Williams has decided to retire. I’m sure that will be announced at some stage. Perhaps.

Apparently Am is actually a 12 by choice

  • hmm i guess its almost time for silly season in terms of transfer talk. Im glad we are getting Ward- think he has big potential. Same with Johan Deysel-he looked good on the weekend for the leopards.

    9. Reinach 10. Lambie 11. Mvovo 12. Esterhuizen 13. Am 14. Mjekevu 15. Bosch

    9. Classens 10. April 11. Sithole 12. Deysel 13. Ward 14. Maritz 15. Smith

  • @SheldonK (Comment 16) : Looking good so far. And keeping a good rotation policy minimises chances of injury to the players and prevents them from being overplayed.
I think Esterhuizen improved a lot throughout the year. He is by no means the finished product (yet), but I would persist with him. Also, with Deysel there it will provide healthy competition and keep him on his toes.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 19) : I actually thought that our backline did look a bit more industrious when Lambie was at 10 and Willie was at 15. But yeah, he is not match fit, and should never have played these past two weeks. But I really don’t like him at 15. There is much better fullbacks than him in the country, but not many flyhalves of his quality, probably only Pollard, and I am more of a fan of Pollard at 12 ala Henry Le Roux.

The Sharks definitely need another specialized 7, otherwise you will be seeing Oosthuizen at 7 again, and we all know how that worked out the first time around.

Warrick Gelant has been in great touch prior to getting injured. Goosen could also be a great at 15, if alllwed to settle.
That said, a confident Goosen playing with a coach like Swys/Franco/RduP could be dynamite.

  • I’m very pleased with the speculation of these signings. All of them I would welcome with open arms. The two guys from WP shows a lot of promise, I rate Johan Deysel(watched him play for Patria in Potch and obviously Namibia there after) and Clinton Swart’s name has popped up a few time’s during our discussions regarding the CC. He can be a good squad player, he’s very consistent, he’s not a flashy player but he doesn’t make a whole lot of mistakes either. I think Ward needs to add a little muscle to be physically prepared for SR but he is certainly a good prospect! Very pleased with all the names we are linked with.

Looks as for once that our scouts have some sense of spotting potential and talented players, keep it up!

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 46) : The Leopards did lose but Deysel still showed up well- classy player in a shite side. @KingCheetah (Comment 50) : You say there are lots of quality 15s in SA currently but only list an injured player and Goosen who isnt in SA and doesnt play 15 for his club. So who are these quality 15s currently playing[email protected]KingCheetah (Comment 48) : Look i think Swart is a good player but Esterhuizen dominated in the game against them. Ive been very critical of Esterhuizen but i cant hide from the fact that the Sharks look a hell of a lot poorer without him at 12.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 49) : Goosen has been awesome in France at 13, so that’s where I would keep him. Plus, I think a backline with Lambie at 10, Pollard at 12 and Goosen at 13 and Willie at 15, could do some serious damage. Add a guy like Sergeal Petersen and JP Pietersen on the wings, and I think we will have a skillful, clever, but powerfull enough backline to stand up to the All Blacks.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 78) : Question on that comment- do you believe if a player/s struggle with defense they should play international rugby? My personal feeling is that international rugby is a lot tighter than domestic rugby with much less space to attack so should a player be a weak defender it gives a massive opportunity for the opposition to attack that space.

We can work with this group and I can’t wait to see what difference GT is going to make at the Sharks, he probably has a hand in some of these signings already? As far as I know he starts November 1, right?

    1. Beast 2. Chillliboy 3. Adriaanse 4. Oosthuizen 5. Lewies 6. DuPreez 7. DuPreez 8. Van Der Walt 9. Reinach 10. Lambie 11. Mvovo 12. Esterhuizen 13. Am 14. Mjekevu 15. Bosch
Bench: Dutoit, Marais, Coenie, Botha, Daniel, Claasens, April, Ward
