Young Sharks forwards Thomas du Toit and Jean-Luc du Preez are among a number of uncapped players that will feature for the Springboks against the Barbarians on 4 November. Allister Coetzee has been forced into some selection gymnastics due to the fact that the first match of this year’s end of year tour falls outside the international window and he thus will not have access to any of his overseas-based players.

Coetzee has thus backed domestic form in naming a 30-man squad for that match, with ten other uncapped players (Lizo Gqoboka, RG Snyman, Roelof Smit, Uzair Cassiem, Tian Schoeman, Francois Venter, Rohan Janse van Rensburg, Sergeal Petersen, Jamba Ulengo and Cheslin Kolbe) joining the two Sharks. All of the locally-based Springboks who played in the Rugby Championship – apart from injured Lwazi Mvovo, Francois Hougaard and Juan de Jongh – are in the mix, while Ruan Combrinck and Nizaam Carr return from injury to take their place in the squad as well.

The 30-man squad for the Barbrians game is:

Lourens Adriaanse, Thomas du Toit, Lizo Gqoboka, Tendai Mtawarira, Trevor Nyakane, Malcolm Marx, Bongi Mbonambi, Adriaan Strauss, Lood de Jager , Pieter-Steph du Toit, Eben Etzebeth , RG Snyman, Nizaam Carr, Uzair Cassiem, Jean-Luc du Preez, Oupa Mohojé, Roelof Smit, Faf de Klerk, Rudy Paige, Piet van Zyl, Pat Lambie, Tian Schoeman, Damian de Allende , Rohan Janse van Rensburg, Jesse Kriel, Francois Venter, Ruan Combrinck, Sergeal Petersen, Jamba Ulengo, Cheslin Kolbe

The squad to stay on and contest the remainder of the tour looks as follows:

Jannie du Plessis , Vincent Koch, Steven Kitshoff, Tendai Mtawarira, Trevor Nyakane, Malcolm Marx, Bongi Mbonambi, Adriaan Strauss, Lood de Jager , Pieter-Steph du Toit, Eben Etzebeth , Franco Mostert, Willem Alberts , Jean-Luc du Preez, Oupa Mohojé, Roelof Smit, Jaco Kriel, Warren Whiteley, Faf de Klerk, Rudy Paige, Piet van Zyl, Pat Lambie, Elton Jantjies , Damian de Allende , Lionel Mapoe , Jesse Kriel, Francois Venter, Ruan Combrinck, JP Pietersen, Sergeal Petersen, Bryan Habana, Johan Goosen, Willie le Roux

  • @JD (Comment 5) : Paul Willemse and Jauques Du plessis both played u20 bokke and apparently they are aloud to join the french national side after 3 years of French residance according to european commentators ? Dont know but If they are aloud to then surely AE is aloud to ? Clyde Rathbone captained the u20 boks to a victory with JW and he was still aloud to play internationally for Australia . I forgot Slewies had a bok cap to him

  • @schrodingers cat (Comment 4) : @JD (Comment 9) : The u20 Boks became SA’s designated second team in 2012 but this only tied the players if they played another conry’s designated second team. In 2012 JRWC they played Ireland, Italy, England, Argentina and New Zealand of which only the Italy u20 team might have been their designated second team so the 2012 u20 Boks’ situation (Paul Willemse) is a bit unclear.

From 2013 or 2014 the WR regulations changed and playing in the JRWC ties a player now, irrespective of the opposition’s status

  • How shite was Sean Veldsman in the Wallaby/AB game he was a huge embarrassment, disallowing a perfectly legal try and then getting totally overruled by Nigel Owens on another try.
The rest of the rugby world had a front row seat to our incompetent and amateur officials,it one thing to foster these people on the local game in the name of transformation, but I doubt if the rest of the world will tolerate it when it comes to their games.
That disallowed try came at a key moment in the game for Aus and could have turned the game.

  • @The hound (Comment 19) : He did have a shocker, Dan Coles try should also have been given, Foley had his hands on Coles which is not allowed. I think ultimately, the Aus try would not have made a big difference, the score may have been closer, but as per always, the All Blacks dominate in the last 10-15 minutes in every game they play. To me it appears simple, the All Blacks are just fitter than the rest? I don’t think it is rocket science, they just up the anti in the final phase of play.

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 23) : It was a very pivotal moment hat disallowed try as NZ were in a bad patch and making mistakes. That try and conversion would have put Aussies 2 ahead and confidence would have been up. Try was disallowed which rocked them, then Foley missed a penalty and Savea scored 5 min later…that little patch was where the game swung and Aussies were out of it.

  • Apparently:

Springbok coach Allister Coetzee says his team will be treating their opening fixture of their four-match tour of the northern hemisphere as an opportunity to build for the big test against England the following week, and they will thus not be entering into the Barbarians spirit.

“Just because it is not a test match against the Barbarians, that does not mean we are going there just to entertain,” said Coetzee at a media briefing at the weekend.

“Firstly, it is a match that will set the tone for the rest of the tour. So we need to start well and play well. The Barbarians go out there to play entertaining rugby, but we want to win and set the tone for the test matches that come after it. We can’t play one way one week and a different way the next week.”

  • @The hound (Comment 19) :

The ruling was absolutely correct according to the laws. You cannot intentially prevent a tackler from getting to a ball carrier. It is one of the most basic premisis of rugby.

The issues of whether it was intentional or whether the tackler could have reached the ball carrier are judgement calls that Owens made and Veldsman concurred on.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 29) : If you apply that interpretation 100% then the Savea trry after that should also have been disallowed as the Aussie prop was tripped by Cruden whilst trying to chase down Savea. Now according to your interpretation if shouldnt matter if he was going to be caught or not. So then both tries should be disallowed

  • @SheldonK (Comment 24) : I will have to disagree with you here. The same thing happened with Argentina, they pushed the All Blacks as hard as they could to 56 odd minutes, then fell apart. The bench of the Blacks make a huge difference to the result and I firmly believe that had Australia scored and converted, the Blacks would have upped the anti and possibly won by say – 30-17. You talk about Foley missing a kick, Barrett did not land one kick! It was great to see the Aussies push them, but once again, even when playing badly, the Blacks smashed them in the last 15

  • @SheldonK (Comment 35) : That’s actually a good point you make regarding De Allende, if you put it that way his attributes looks more suited for a winger than the higher skill attributes needed in the middle of the field. I think he lacks the pace though. Am I alone in thinking Paige didn’t do too bad the little time that he played?

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 36) : Look they may have turned it on and beat them at the end but you cannot deny that that 5 or minutes was a big factor in the end scoreline. That disallowed try and Foley miss meant the Aussies heads dropped and the fight was gone. Id love to see when last did an All Black opposition dominated possession and territory as much as Aussies did on Sat.

  • @Quintin (Comment 37) : Paige is a scrummy that provides the ball to those around him, he isnt going to win the game on his own by creating things. So if you like that in a scrummy then cool if not then people think he is crap. There may be quicker wings in SA than De Allende…but show me when last the Boks created so much space that allowed our wings space to run free and use that speed? Our wingers have 5m to work with and the light chaps end up being bundled out.

    You misread.
Intentional and effect (being caught) are judgement calls and Owens made those not Veldsman. Veldsman concurred. Two referees judged one way, a fan says it was different and accuse one referee as an incompetent. That’s a little stupid.

I watched the trip a few times and in my judgement it was completely unintentional.

Interpretation and judgement are 2 different concepts. I think only the latter apply here since the law is very clear.

The only true international contest is where players play for their country of birth.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 47) : I disagree on that. Veldsman very clearly stated that the Aussie player had prevented Savea from catching Speight and Owens just agreed…Owens who was up with play believed there was nothing wrong until Veldsman intervened. Now why didnt Veldsman intervene when the prop was tripped trying to catch Savea? He then like the first instance should have highlighted it to Owens who could then also make a call but he chose not to. They exactly the same. In both instances the play behind had no influence on the try. And then there is no defense for his call on that forward pass. He had a shocker.
