Jaco Kriel has been ruled out of the Springboks End of Year Tour after an injury sustained playing in Japan this past weekend.

Kriel was playing for the Kubota Spears when he sustained a grade two tear of his left MCL. The injury rules Kriel out for at least 4 weeks.

The Sprignboks have not named a replacement for Kriel at this stage. It is a blow after Francois Louw and Duane Vermeulen were both ruled out of the EOYT tour, with the Boks’ loose forward stocks reduced to only Oupa Mhoje for the Barbarian game, from the loose forwards having played this year to date.

It has now been confirmed that Nizaam Carr will stay with the Springboks following the Barbarians game as replacement to Kriel.

  • Well Japan strikes again. I know the money is amazing but lots of guys are getting crocked. Should be interesting to see who they call up.

  • Will be interesting to see who they pick in the loose trio now. Think it will depend how the Baabaas game goes for the new guys. No obvious pick at 6..Roelof Smit maybe? Think Kriel has missed his chance with both Louw and Coetzee expected to be fit next year

  • Real bad luck this, as mentioned, this was his shot to really prove his worth and his partnership with Whiteley.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 5) : Do we think AC has the guts to try a loose trio of 6. Smit 7. DuPreez 8. Whiteley vs Eng?

  • Amazing that the hard working animal that is Marcel was overlooked before and again nowadays…not saying he is a fetcher but that he isn’t even mentioned is crazy….just sayin

  • @SheldonK (Comment 8) :

Most likely yes. Alberts surely will start. If Alberts is not selected, will he stick with Mohoje? Or will he use this opportunity to try the Player of the Year on the side of the scrum?

And we could still see a surprise inclusion.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 12) : If Marcel has spent his whole injury time in the gym he is going to come back as strong as the Rock and as hungry as a South Beach seagull, somebody is going get hurt in his first game out

  • No you guys have it all wrong. AC is going to call up Andries Bekker and play him at prop in order to move the Beast from prop to centre, he will then move De Allende from centre to flank and there you have it. Problem solved

  • @The hound (Comment 17) : That is fine, we just need to have a solid loosie bench – Cassiem has done well, but then again, we talking a different level here, but I like that loose trio – JL needs to get a start, we need to see what he can bring to the table.

  • @schrodingers cat (Comment 30) : Don’t joke AC might just copy paste that to his team sheet. He is desperate for any ideas since none of his worked. Why couldn’t a great coach have had the job before him then he could just copy that like snorre did….but instead he had HM who was already copying from snorre
