  • @robdylan (Comment 4) : R Gouws is a great player and far better than Ungerer – his injury was a massive hindrance to the Sharks u21 side. Sometimes it takes an injury to a player to realise just how good he is.

  • @Rugbymad (Comment 26) : no Schramm this year. This is the year that will define his rugby career. He has all the talent in the world and if his mind is focused fully on his job, he is good enough to make it to the very top. His discipline has let him down over the years and the Sharks have made the right move in making him decide where his future goes. He will be playing CC qualifiers and if he puts his head down, gets to every practice etc he can become a wonderful player, fingers crossed

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 30) : precisely. If there’s one thing for sure, any “discipline issues”, whether real or perceived, are not going to get you anywhere in this new Rob du Preez era. You know I love Ayron, but until he decides that he wants this more than anything else in his life, it’s probably not a good idea for him to go near Rob and the seniors.

  • The signing of a 34 year old Frenchman really baffles me. The inability to recognise groom and manage home grown talent shows the failure of management.Hopefully Teichman will not fall prey to mediocrity. A good coach will know how to get the best out of a player and not use archaic measures to solicit performance. Suppose I can’t be anymore diplomatic than that.

  • @robdylan (Comment 32) : he is an awesome kid and has a massive energy about him, everyone loves Ayron. The problem is this, he was born with a natural ability and I just feel he has never had to work really hard to get where he is. He is hurting at not being in the Super Rugby squad and we all hope this is the wake up call he needs. Du Preez has known Ayron for a very long time, he has played alongside his boys since 6 years old and he will not take any of his shit. Simply put, he is on a final warning and I do not really mind saying that and making it public, if he reads this site, he knows my heart is in the right place. It is time for him to realize that with any true success, comes hard work. He needs to be managed now accordingly and I think Paul Anthony being coach of the qualifying side is perfect for him, he coached me at school and I think his man management is second to none. One thing I will tell you Rob, if he commits to his rugby as he does to his girlfriend and mates, you have a seriously talented player who can add massively to the Sharks, I think they know this too, hence all the chances. Anyway, that is all I will say about that, fingers crossed he matures and moves forward now

  • @Rugbymad (Comment 35) : I hear exactly what you saying but I will say this, Poitreneud was an astonishing attacking fullback and being French, is naturally full of flair. Perhaps he will help bring out the best in Bosch. As I have said many times before, age is now not relevant, Boasch is first choice fullback and needs to up the anti on attack, he needs to join the line, decide when to attack from the back. I think Poitreneud will help in this regard.

  • @Rugbymad (Comment 35) : @Vonno13 (Comment 37) : no not really baffling as he is signed to help mentor both Bosch and Smith and according to what I’ve read ‘ t was discussed with them and they fully buy into this so it can only be a good thing for them. On form Poitrenaud is a world class player and could help the Sharks to have a devastating back three!!!

  • If you guys re-read the article you’ll see I’ve added an update on Stefan and Hanco.

    Both players need to do some conditioning work over the coming weeks and subject to that happening, they will join the squad.

  • @robdylan (Comment 39) : I’m glad conditioning is assessed when selecting the squad, as this has not always been the case. With that in mind does that mean Coenie has been doing some work or does conditioning (I assume this means fitness) only apply to the backs?

  • @Hulk (Comment 41) : obviously expectations in terms of body fat percentage are different depending on the player’s position and body type. This is actually quite scientific :)

    So if Stefan and Hanco were told to go work on their conditioning – and Coenie was not – it’s safe to assume the coaches are happy with Coenie’s body fat percentage. No conspiracy here, I promise!

    @robdylan (Comment 39) : Well I hope we see a fitter Coenie for 2017.

    @JD (Comment 46) : That is the exactly what must happen. The amount of times I see guys just lying on the ground after a tackle and not getting back into the defensive line makes me pull my hair out. I hope Rob du Preez’s tolerance for poorly conditioned and under performing players is at a minimum and that all players know anyone can be dropped for not putting in the required effort.

I cant find anything about this in any news article. I now Braam van Straaten has just been appointed as a coach at St Charles College so this elevation to the Sharks is interesting.

The Sharks juniors have been weak in general so hard to be too critical of his influence there. By all accounts Mike Volwes is now taking over the Sharks u19s and he is a good coach, especially skills wise. So yeh basically i think both Zondagh and Van Straaten and good aquisitons

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 55) : I think that we need to remember the players days are split between field, gym and video sessions so these skills coaches will only be involved in the field sessions so will have time outside of that for other things. I think the Gold move was a combo of a few factors namely the restructuring of the union, the financial restraints and probably Gold himself walking away.
