We’d like to welcome the following players to the Sharks for Super Rugby in 2017. Their signings were confirmed by the union a few minutes back.

Young prop Enoch Mnyaka joins from the Boland Currie Cup squad, whom he represented this year after moving on from the EP Kings age group ranks. Enoch has just turned 23 and is considered a bright prospect at tight head, an area where the Sharks are looking to add depth. Sharks COO Eduard Coetzee describes the youngster as “a scrummager in the BJ Botha mould”, a comparison sure to warm the hearts of Sharks fans if he does go on to emulate the former DHS boy who anchored the Sharks scrum un-movingly for so many years. Enoch has signed on for an initial 2-year stint.

Another young player joining the forward ranks is former Western Province and Junior Springbok loose forward Jacques Vermeuelen. The tall 21-year-old represented South Africa at two Under 20 World Championship tournaments and also has senior Currie Cup experience. Coetzee tells us he’s been brought in because of his strong pedigree and utility value, since he can provide cover at tight lock as well as blindside flank. Vermeuelen has signed a 3-year contract.

Among the backs, Leopards and Namibian World Cup centre Johan Deysel finally joins the Sharks formally, on a two-year contract, after a pre-season loan spell last year. Deysel will add important depth in midfield and at 25 years old is still young enough to deliver his best years of rugby to the Sharks cause. With the other centres in the squad all still 23 and under, Deysel will presumably also be looked to as a slightly older statesman in a very young midfield.

Also in midfield, Junior Springbok captain Jeremy Ward joins the Sharks on a 2-year deal; this is a signing that has been previously confirmed.

Former Stormers wing-cum-centre Kobus van Wyk signs for 3 years. At 1.9m and 94kg, the 24 year old is seen as an important asset in a back three that can do with a bit more beef. Van Wyk has been on a short stint in France, but has committed to being a part of the Sharks’ story for the foreseeable future and we look forward to some great play from him in black and white.

The final signing is one that is perhaps a little harder to understand. The Sharks are moving to a model where they invest heavily in players who are prepared to reciprocate and make long-term commitments to the team. 34-year-old former French international Clement Poitrenaud is hardly one who is going to be able to stick around beyond the end of his one-year contract, but Coetzee tells me that this signing is one that has been made with a specific tactical purpose in mind. With young players in Curwin Bosch and Rhyno Smith earmarked as future long-terms assets at fullback, the Sharks felt that both could benefit from having an experienced player in the mix, who could mentor and help their game develop. As a player who has committed his entire career to a single team in France (Coetzee tells me that Clement has been with Toulouse from the age of 6), as well as a veteran of 50 test matches for les Blues, it is felt that he is exactly the right sort of player to assist and supplement the talent already in the squad, both in terms of on-field performances and also off-field culture. Clement can also cover inside centre and Coetzee assures me that the young players in question have bought into this signing and understand the thinking and I would encourage fans to welcome Clement to the team along with the others, trusting that he will add great value to the squad in the short time he is with us.

The bulk of the Super Rugby squad will thus comprise existing players who have shown loyalty to the Sharks. A raft of contract extensions have also been announced and I will cover these in a separate article.

  • The best Sharks teams have always had a bit of French flair. And Curwin and Ryno do need an experienced guy to mentor them.

  • Well done Sharks! Some proper signings these. Must confess, I was a little peeved with the Clement signing, but after reading Coetzee’s comments I can understand the reasoning behind it. I am sure Bosch and Rhyno will both benefit from his wealth of experience.

  • Great news! Happy to see Poitrenaud there to pass on advice to Bosch and Smith. Mentoring is a good thing and I don’t expect him to play much.

  • So nothing on the coaching team. Maybe they are still looking for a defense guru. Would love to get Omar back. Take it guys like Astle won’t be going to the Kings.

  • I’m very happy with what I see here. I can’t wait to see Enoch as I noticed him play and thought he looked useful. If he grows into anything like BJ Botha it’s a fantastic addition.

I was very nervous going into 2017 with such inexperienced Fullbacks and glad we have someone with lots of experience (and some flair  ) to help them grow. Don’t know much about Clement but hope he is a solid option that can make his tackles.

  • The main question i have is: Which of the players signed are currently injured?
Overall i think the signings are ok. Going to be interesting to see where each is utilised and the general pecking order come 2017

This has me more hopeful than any signing. Hope it applies to our head coach too.

(Anyone else feel that scrumhalf depth may still be a concern?)

Ungerer’s passing is a concern. I far preferred Venter. His speed of pass and speed to the breakdown was much quicker! Ungerer puts more pressure onto his flyhalves.
