The World Rugby awards nominations have been released, with three South Africans being named in the shortlists.

Before you get too excited, it’s more like 1 player and 2 officials. Seabelo Senatla has deservedly been nominated as World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year, and with 66 tries in the season he is a front runner for the award.

The other two nominations come in the World Rugby Referee Award where both Jaco Peyper and Rasta Rasivhenge are nominated in a shortlist of four referees.

The rest of the awards, as expected, are dominated by All Blacks. They stand to win World Rugby Team of the Year while Anton Lienert-Brown and Ardie Savea both stand a chance to win Breakthrough Player of the Year. Steve Hanson is nominated as Coach ofthe Year while TJ Perenara is nominated for try of the year.

England also feature in the Tema of the Year shortlist, with Eddie Jones nominated in the Coach of the Year category and Maro Itoje faces off with the two All Blacks for Breakthrough Player of the Year.

The Player of the Year award shortlists for both Men and Women will be announced this weekend.

  • Anyone who had any doubts about the level of shite that S.A rugby has sunk to can have no more misgivings than to weep at this list.
Firstly lets leave Sentala out of it he is brilliant and deserves the award.
But fuck when the only other showing we have on this list are Starving Marvin and Toilet Paper, its time to concentrate on golf.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 10) : You’re probably right but there’s nothing unexpected about the AB’s dominating though which ultimately makes it feel a little scripted.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 11) : Thats a fair point. Should team/coach/player of the year be one that has excelled more this year than previous years. Or should it be more for consistently being good. Interesting thought

  • @SheldonK (Comment 13) : Not wanting to stand in the way of a fine tradition, it should probably reflect World Rugby’s ongoing love affair with the Kiwis

  • @vanmartin (Comment 15) : Yeh interesting you say that. I saw someone mention it around the Rugby Championship saying why do NZ always start the comp at home…why cant they start in ARG and SA then play at home. They said giving them that home start gives them an added advantage early on in the comp. I guess he has a point. Think NZ would still be favourites to win but it would be tougher

  • @SheldonK (Comment 16) : Didn’t mean to sound like a typical conspiracy theorist there so apologies if it came off that way. As you say, regardless of outside influences, there is just no denying that the Kiwis simply are damn good. It does irritate me though that in spite of this, it seems as though certain bodies deem it necessary to ensure that the odds are ever in their favour. I preemptively concede that this may be nothing more than personal perception.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 16) : World rugby team of the year should go to the best team in the world, and if you have just broken the world record for consecutive wins, then I reckon you ave a more than beer shout at the award.
This is an exceptional All Blacks team, and the key their success is the team part.

  • @The hound (Comment 18) : I am in complete agreement with you on this one; no amount of accusations of bias and favouritism can detract from what an amazing team the current crop of All Blacks are.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 16) : apparently its got to do with some sort of deal between Nzl and Oz surrounding the blideloe cup that was signed before Argentina joined

  • @SheldonK (Comment 23) : @Zibbie (Comment 24) : strange as I’d think that the new structure of the Rugby championship would replace those old deals but shows how much they really care about SA and Argentina!!!
