Omar to teach these dogs to fight?

“Behind every successful cerebral figure there lies a Rottweiler whose job it is to browbeat, badger or bully the footsoldiers into line. Ian McGeechan had Jim Telfer to wave the big stick, Gordon Brown employed Damian McBride as his enforcer and Alan Solomons has Omar Mouneimne to keep his Edinburgh side on their toes.” IAIN MORRISON, The Scotsman, 19 January 2014. Buy? Hold? Sell?

Those of you at all acquainted with the stock market will be familiar with the sort of short hand speak that analysts use when rating various commodities. In this global and professional game, rugby players also have value that can increase or decrease in line with their performances on the field, so I thought I’d do a bit of a Friday mash-up and see what my limited knowledge of financial analysis could mean for the Sharks’ Currie Cup squad. [...]

A strong Sharks under 21 side has been named for Saturday’s semi-final against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, with Currie Cup regular Andre Esterhuizen picked at fullback in the only real surprise. [...]

2015: a team failure needs a team response

15 Oct 15 12:00 by Rob Otto (robdylan) | 38 Comments

As fans who’ve endured the worst year, results wise, in at least a decade of Sharks rugby, it’s perhaps inevitable that the last few months of 2015 will be spent in deep contemplation, trying desperately to work out what went wrong and to seek out some signs of hope for the future. Even more inevitable, I guess, will be the temptation to look for obvious scapegoats – to identify one or more individuals on whom we can pin this season-long disappointment, whose departures we can attempt to engineer, whose names we can besmirch in the hope that their removal might suddenly result in a 2016 upswing. [...]

The “Old Firm” and a touch of Blarney?

15 Oct 15 11:08 by Rob Otto (robdylan) | 7 Comments

It’s been a rather interesting World Cup tournament so far, with a fair few games that haven’t gone completely to plan during the pool phases. South Africa’s shock loss to Japan, of course, has to count as the biggest upset in the history of the tournament (if not rugby itself) and it would be hard for anything to top that, but the so-called “minnow nations” have certainly played their part in an entertaining spectacle so far. [...]

What’s next for the Sharks

13 Oct 15 17:09 by Pierre McLeod (pierre_mackie) | 81 Comments

Reminiscing over the last few seasons it’s hard to believe how the Sharks got “worked” after they took “the drop” off the back of a very successful 2013 Currie Cup campaign. The Sharks decided to part ways with John Plumtree, who took them to two Currie Cup titles in 2008 and 2010, and appointed former Rugby World Cup winning coach Jake White to take them into a new chapter in Sharks Rugby in 2014. [...]

One last hurrah

13 Oct 15 09:57 by Rob Otto (robdylan) | 40 Comments

Let’s put aside our doom and gloom for a bit (and forget about the woes of the senior side) as we get firmly behind the Sharks under 21 team for this weekend’s semi-final against Free State. [...]

Masterstroke, or momentum killer?

12 Oct 15 15:02 by Rob Otto (robdylan) | 104 Comments

The Sharks under 21 side, after a run of four unbeaten games that managed to drag them up out of the doldrums and into the semi-finals, suffered a 22-74 defeat at the hands of the Cheetahs this weekend. There’s more to this story, however and I urge that only the brave read further. [...]
