Cheetahs pick Johnson
Cheetahs coach Naka Drostske has been forced to reshuffle his backline for this weekend’s game against the Lions, with both Andries Strauss and Hennie Daniller ruled out through injury. In an interesting move, Ashley Johnson has been included at number 8, indicating that he will not be in action for the Boks this weekend. [...]
Van Vuuren fit – but still no Ebersohn
Cheetahs hooker PW van Vuuren has been named in the Cheetahs lineup to play the Sharks in Durban this weekend, despite coming off injured against the Blue Bulls last week. There is still no sign of midfield playmaker Rob Ebersohn, though. [...]
Cheetahs team to face Leopards
The Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske has named a solid line up to take on the Leopards in the opening round of the Currie Cup this weekend, with Andries Strauss being selected as captain in the absence of Adriaan Strauss. [...]
Living up to the (Sonny) Bill
Sports 24 reports that Dr Brendan Venter, once a very influential inside centre, then a very astute coach and notable interviewee at Heineken Rugby games, worked with his old Vrystaat mates (who also played and coached under him at Saracens), Naka Drotske and Michael Horak (Cheetahs defence coach), in nullifying Sonny Boy Williams’ influence in their famous win against the Crusaders. [...]
Cheetahs name 5th Captain
The Cheetahs have named Wilhelm Steenkamp as their fifth captain this season after an incredibly unlucky string of injuries to their skippers. [...]
Another week, another skipper for Cheetahs
Sharks old boy Andries Strauss will become the fourth Cheetahs captain in as many matches as he leads the central team out against the Lions this weekend. Coach Naka Drotske has dropped flyhalf Naas Olivier after an unimpressive showing, both as playmaker and captain against the Stormers last week. [...]
Positives from the season so far
It’s always easier to write this kind of piece after your team has started the season well and has won two from two and lies second on the overall log and at the top of your conference than it would’ve been last year when nothing seemed to go right. [...]
Smith doubtful for Sharks clash
The Cheetahs will only know tomorrow whether Springbok flank Juan Smith will be available to take on the Sharks on Saturday’s opening Super Rugby game. Smith is struggling with a calf strain and can only be confirmed later in the week whether he will be fit. Philip van der Walt has been pencilled in should Smith not be cleared. [...]
Bulls, Cheetahs name sides
The two South African franchises that aren’t competing in the Neo Africa Tri-Series will both play warmup games this weekend against local opposition. [...]
Ten things I like about…
Having endured a little criticism of late for being a wee bit negative about some of the other South African teams, I thought I might try to set the record straight a little. Far from being a complete and utter “big cat hater”, I hereby give you the ten things I like about the Lions and the Cheetahs. [...]
Verster: It’s Absolutely untrue
Despite the absence of a title sponsor, the Cheetahs players have all remained on a full salary. [...]
Lambie stuffed around further as Boks name their 21
The Springbok coaching side has named a 21-man outfit to take on the Barbarians at Twickenham. It more-or-less sum up their selection approach for this tour. After excelling in the Currie Cup at flyhalf – and deputising there for Morne Steyn on three occasions so far on tour, Pat Lambie is somehow, miraculously, named to start at fullback. [...]
Andries gets the call
The most improved centre of the 2010 Currie Cup Tournament, Andries Strauss, has been called up the replace an injured Zane Kirchner. Strauss is set to join the Boks on Wednesday and will in all likelihood play on Saturday against the Barbarians. [...]
Time for a change: Sharksworld chats to Meyer Bosman
Former Free State centre-cum-flyhalf Meyer Bosman has arrived in Durban to continue his career with the Sharks. The lanky Bosman, who was a surprise pick for Jake White’s Bok touring party as a raw 20-year-old, has made great strides in the local game since joining the Cheetahs as an under 21 player. The 25-year-old Bethlehem boy attended Oakedale Agricultural College in Riversdal, the same school as Sharks legend Johann Muller, before returning to the Free State to study. Sharksworld caught up with Meyer for a quick chat. [...]
