The Sharks fought back from a nightmare first half to deliver an emphatic 47-31 victory over the Lions at Ellis Park in last night’s Currie cup clash. For the second time in a week, an act of Lions indiscipline resulted in a red card that changed the complexion of the match. [...]

Sharks deliver a special win for their fans
Sharks pipped at the death once more
Rob du Preez asked his Sharks for a big effort ahead of yesterday’s Super Rugby quarter-final clash in Johannesburg and that’s exactly what he got from the players, who lost 21-23 in controversial circumstances after a pulsating game that threw up a number of questionable refereeing decisions. [...]
Big win for Sharks XV
After losing to Griquas in their opening SuperSport challenge match a fortnight ago, the Sharks XV returned to winning ways on Saturday and put the Griffons to the sword in Welkom. Eight tries were scored in a 52-24 bonus point victory. [...]
Poor start for the XV
It wasn’t only the Sharks Super Rugby team that put in a disappointing effort on Saturday – earlier in the day, the Sharks XV went down heavily against Griquas in the first fixture of the new SuperSport Rugby Challenge competition. [...]
Cheetahs gore Sharks’ soft underbelly
For the second week running, the Sharks were outscored by a horrifying five tries to two, despite a more-respectable-sounding 30-38 scoreline against the Cheetahs on Saturday. With captain Philip van der Walt lost to injury in the first minute of the match, things started badly for the Sharks and only got worse as the game progressed. [...]
Last Exit to Bronkhorstspruit Vol. 6: “Don’t Worry, Be Happy (a.k.a. ode to the whinelands)” – with apologies to Bobby McFerrin
Normally I don’t like to indulge in schadenfreude (much), but the amount of negative press surrounding the Sharks’ win over the weekend has forced my hand. Sure, the penalty try was contentious, but it’s not like it’s the first time that has ever happened. You win some, you lose some. The fact remains, in my eyes (which are admittedly not entirely free from bias), the Sharks were in the ascendancy for most of the game, winning the set pieces, bossing the collisions, and playing the moments that mattered better. So here’s a little light-hearted response to the naysayers out there. [...]
Don’t look back in… well… anything
For Sharks fans tempted to engage any further in retrospective bickering on social media relating to Saturday’s penalty try at Newlands, I have but one things to say. Focus on the Bulls. [...]
Sharks pack set up epic Newlands triumph
The Sharks forwards outperformed their more fancied Stormers counterparts at Newlands yesterday to lay the platform on which an unexpected, but very welcome, 18-13 upset victory was built. All the talk in the build up had centred around the strength of the Cape pack, particularly at the set piece, but it was the men in black who turned up to play on the day, turning in a flawless performance at both lineout and scrum time, as well as bringing more aggression to the point of contact. [...]
Gold happy with team’s character against Kings
Sharks head coach Gary Gold said he was happy with the way his team showed character and courage to come back after trailing 0 – 13 for the better part of the first half when they played the EP Kings at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday afternoon. [...]
What they had to say: Sharks vs EP Kings, Round 4
Hi Sharks fans. What a let down of a Bok Squad announcement. Poor Xola Ntshinga had to keep asking the ‘crowd’ to applaud the players and the whole affair was somewhat of an anti-climax. I won’t get into player selection as that’s been discussed at length elsewhere. All I will say is that I feel for Marcell Coetzee and I hope he is the first player called up when injury strikes. [...]
Sharks win in the Bay
The Sharks were forced to dig deep to record a 24-20 win against the EP Kings in Port Elizabeth this evening. [...]
Another mixed bag of junior results
The Sharks under 21 side made life harder than they needed to for themselves in recording a 32-20 bonus-point victory over the EP Kings in Durban. [...]
Junior Springboks bow the knee to England
The Junior Springboks bowed out as World Rugby Under-20 championship contenders when they lost to defending champions England at the Stadio San Michele, Calvisano Italy on Monday night. [...]
Du Toit scores as Junior Boks thrash Samoa
Sharks prop Thomas du Toit opened the scoring for the Junior Springboks in their second pool match on Saturday, when they beat Samoa at the Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi in Parma Italy. [...]
Beaten by a better team
Gary Gold’s assessment of Saturday’s result at Newlands is certainly an apt one, but I can’t help thinking that it’s a question of emphasis on one specific word. [...]
