Sharks squeak it!

Well done boys… a close thing at the end, but the Sharks pulled through.

Just a few quick thoughts about the match, pending a full review later.

Scrums were pretty solid throughout. One thing the Sharks do not lack is good props with ball skills. Beast and BJ put in some huge hits. Bis was superb, but needs to watch his discipline. Muller and Ackies also had big games. Johann in particular took a fair few lineout steals, but we there was often chaos at the back every time he did. The loose forwards as a combination were overshadowed by their Force counterparts, which is why we struggled for clean ball. Something to work on.ย  A promising debut for Deysel, at least. Kanko and Botes both gave away silly penalties. AJ was pretty anonymous in open play.

Too much aimless kicking amongst the backs. We had them rattled in the first half hour, but once they settled down, I think they really started to enjoy all the possessionย  we kept hoofing down their throats. Outside backs need to work on their one-on-one defence. Murray, Pietersen and Mentz were all beaten easily on a number of occasions.

Terblanche and Mentz need catching practice…

Anyway, let’s not be too critical. 4 points in the bag and some good individual performances, not least of them from Beast, Bis, Frans and Brad Barritt. Bring on the Stormers!

  • I must say – I like the ELVs. Far less penalties, although they ain’t done much to reduce the kicking…

  • Far too much dropping of the ball in the tackle and we seemed to tire in the last 20 minutes. Don’t like kicking away so much possession either.

  • Rob, if you going to write original content, you got be less bias in favour of your beloved ‘Squalus acanthias’ ๐Ÿ˜‰

Be honest a 4 point win at home should be 5 points.

  • Na. Happy to take 4 against the Force. Next week we need to take five against weaker opposition! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Sauce – last year the Sharks only got their first BP in about week 6. The Crusaders are known to start slow (if that’s the case this year we are deep in poo), and rather start slow and build up a head of steam to peak at the end.

  • Thought that apart from one slipped tackle, 22 did quite well

  • hey rob, i am pleased you did the article cos this game should rather be forgotten. i have never seen a team with so much skill squander it. i don’t want to see frans playing ten again. dick has got one thing wrong and that is putting frans ahead of ruan as backup to fred. kannotcatchski is living up to my nickname. and stefan needs to work a little on his decision making. and finally henno mentz must go back to the wildebeest. that guys is so one dimensional he gives a blank piece of paper personality. the good news though is the sharks played shockingly and won, imagine what will happen when they actually put some effort in.

  • Hi TT – I thought of you when Ryan was dropping the ball in the tackle (again). Seem to remember that was one of the things you asked him about on the Q&A on the blog. Said he was working on it??

  • that was a classic moment… Surprised Michael M allowed that question through ๐Ÿ˜‰

There will be a fuller match report, but you should write one too, TT. This site isn’t about pumping the Sharks up when they haven’t done well… Ok, so I might still do it, but that’s not really the point ๐Ÿ˜‰
