Loffie Eloff has made a single change to the Lions team to take on the Blues at Ellis Park this weekend.
Debutant at number 8 last week, RW Kember losese out to the returning Willem Alberts. Alberts joins Baywatch Grobbelaar and Franco van der Merwe in a very big back row that will need to fire on all cylinders to give their side any chance of an upset.
Johann van Niekerk and Earl Rose, both of whom had a dramatic impact off the bench last week, will again start among the reserves as Eloff keeps faith with the backline that tamed the Cheetahs on their home turf.
Lions side:
Louis Ludik, Dusty Noble, Jaco Pretorius, Doppies le Grange, Ryno Benjamin, Louis Strydom, Jano Vermaak, Willem Alberts, Franco van der Merwe, Cobus Grobbelaar (capt), Gerhard Mostert, Anton van Zyl, Ross Geldenhuys, Willie Wepener, Heinke van der Merwe.
Replacements:
Gavin Williamson, Gert-Andries van der Merwe, Alten Hulme, Joe van Niekerk, Chris Jonck, Earl Rose, Jaco van Schalkwyk.

I so badly want them to win, but I don’t see it happening. GO LIONS!
Dusty Noble vs Joe Rokokoko(kokoko)
Eish 😯
Yea this should be a good indicator of where the Lions are.
Le Requinny be interesting to see Dusty get some full game time, hes looked good in Sevens and Currie Cup and there is nothing like a baptism of fire to top flight rugby to bring the best out of you…..or send you packing.
he’s a trier but he lacks top-end
He’ll clean you pipes in any kind of race, do you actually work or do you have a new obsession?
lol, looking at the Lions team you can say that about most of them.
Oh well, go the underdogs!
ja, dont see it happening either, but great win last weekend.
Sauce – no-one has yet been dumb enough to pay me to play wing 😉
I believe in multitasking 😉
Haha i moonlighted at 15 when i was about 13 for a couple of games, doubt it was the wisest choice.
you must’ve been a pretty big fullback back then…
unnaturally so 😀
What was OO going on about?
Two boys from my uni res in stellies playing in this game.
Both on the bench though…
Wanted to clear up some perceived misconceptions about a project he’s involved in. There was a reasonably lengthly discussion yesterday, but I can’t remember where.
Use the search box to look for “Dinkskrum”… that should find it for you
which okes would those be, VinchainSaw?
And, just looking at the Lions squad, two more boys that I knew growing up!
Both were beasts… but a little long in the tooth now.
Alten Hulme, who was a first year when I was a third year and Jaco van Schalkwyk who was in my year.
Alten was a nice enough guy, Jaco was a bit of a wanker.
Bertus Smit and Dirk Smit were the boys I knew growing up.
They both palyed for our Afrikaans local rival and both were easily 130 kg before they left school.
They were all shotputters with Dirk breaking the SA seniors record at 17 and their younger brother (struggling for his name) broke his record at 15 or 16!
3 brothers, all units and their old man was just as big.
Sunday lunches the old lady used to cook each of the men their own chicken, along with the usual veg and roast potatoes etc.
jissus, Vin… chickens were cheaper back then
Boet, these okes were absolute tanks. Monsters.
Just after school I was moonlighting at a restaurant and one of the brothers was also workign there as a part-time gig during the athletics off-season.
Saw the boy get through 6 full rack of ribs after work one night.
I used to go res with a boy from your end of the world – he actually went to natal trials at about the same time butch was entering the scene.
He was 136kgs and couldt turn his neck as his traps were too big.
Anyway his knees fucked out and he couldnt go any further.
But one day we took him out for his birthday to a place in cape town caleld scrooge’s diner where you could eat a 2.2kg steak.
If you finsihed it with chips and a beer you got your money back and your name in gold on the wall.
So anyway Nic didnt drink so asked for a miklshake instead.
When the steak came they brought it out on a pizza plate.
He finished it in 55 minutes and then on the way home asked us to stop at the BP express shop and picked up two more pies…
Rugby players eat like horses chum…
scary…
Man, I remember Robbie Kempson’s debut game for Natal. Northern’s had picked a huge (141kg) policeman named Johann Nel in the front row and Kempson at something like 115 had to scrum against this monster.
I tell you what, but Robbie finished him off in the first half. I don’t think that oke EVER played for the Bulls again.
There’s some serious barrel-scraping going on here. Any of you EVER heard of Gert-Andries van der Merwe, Gavin Williamson or Chris Jonck? Williamson at least was part of the Spears debacle, but the other two are basically amateurs plucked from the obscurity of the club ranks.
That takes some balls, Loffie
no – I’m wrong. Jonck comes from EP at least
Vinnie, you should know Anton Worms van Zyl, no?
He ended up studying with us. Prim of Huis Viss, & played mainly koshuis rugby, before being picked up by the proper Maties team.
where’s Varkhond, BTW? Is he injured?
Not the ideal team sheet for the blues but I hope that the new boys can step up and make a game of it..hopefully even get a bonus point..better yet sneak a win quickly whle nobody is watching 😉
Come to think of it the Lions managed a win against the Crusaders last year at home..anything is possible..Is suzy perhaps in Joburg this weekend?

Hey you did that last weekend 😉
Yeah I remember worms Quinny!
Top chap and a good enough rugby player too. Geez he played koshuis forever!
Didnt realise it was him… 😳 thought he was accounting and raising hell elsewhere by now…
