Both teams showed early season jitters in a start-stop first half with both giving away numerous free-kicks and seemed content with testing each other with up-and-unders.

The home side scored two penalties though Fourie and a converted try through lock Henry Grimes to race to a 13-0 lead after 25 minutes.

Rookie centre Stephan Dippenaar grabbed a try for the visitors on the half-time hooter.

Both coaches must have had a lot to say at the break as the second half saw more entertaining play with ball in hand resulting in five tries being scored..

The pick of the tries was that by SWD winger Allistair Kettledas, who dummied and side stepped defenders before racing in from 70m out. Scrum-half Hendrik van der Nest also crossed over for the home side.

Blue Bulls winger Rocco Jansen claimed two tries while eigthman Okkie Kruger scored the bonus point try.

Three yellow cards were dished out – Bulls prop Dean Greyling was sin-binned for a late tackle after he had been warned for stamping, and for SWD Willem Harmse (professional foul) and van der Nest (back-chatting) also spent ten minutes on the sidelines.

The difference however was Fourie’s boot. His four penalties and three conversions were enough to ensure victory, despite being outscored by three tries to four.
