Dick Muir has named a team containing only one change to the unit that struggled to beat a game Stormers team in Durban.

Rory Kockott comes into the team at scrumhalf in place of the injured Ruan Pienaar. Kockott’s spot on the bench goes to Charl McLeod.

The Sharks 22 is as follows:

15. Francois Steyn, 14. Odwa Ndungane, 13. Waylon Murray, 12. Bradley Barritt, 11. JP Pietersen, 10. Frederic Michalak, 9. Rory Kockott, 8. Ryan Kankowski, 7. AJ Venter, 6. Jacques Botes, 5. Johann Muller (Captain), 4. Johan Ackermann, 3. BJ Botha, 2. Bismarck du Plessis, 1. Tendai Mtawarira

Replacements: 16. Craig Burden, 17. Jannie du Plessis, 18. Albert van den Berg, 19. Keegan Daniel, 20. Charl McLeod, 21. Adrian Abraham Jacobs, 22. Stefan Terblanche

  • This side is up on Superrugby, but not the Sharks site yet. It SHOULD be accurate, given the noises we’ve heard.

I wonder how Jannie is enjoying starting on the bench? This is a rumour – let me stress very much a rumour – that Toulon have approached BJ as well (methinks they printed a shite load of merchandise in the hope of signing a B Botha)…

Looking forward to Kockerott starting, also gives us a chance to see if McLeod can step it up a level too.

  • I am worried about AJ at flank with these experimental laws.

Play ackers for 40min, bring Albert on at flank and move AJ to lock.

You NEED AJ there for a full 80 against the Bulls, but he won’t last the 80 at Flank IMO.

I would be interested to see who kicks if he replaces Kockott.

Will Michalak play the whole game and take over from Kockott as kicker?

  • yes agree KSA, Albert has certainly shown a set of wheels from the bench – think the new laws suits mobile style of play to a t – flank will give him a free licence to play the sort of game he likes to play. If only we had more depth at flank – I would then suggest moving AJ to lock for the rest of the S14…

  • FYI

Suntory Sungoliath upset Sanyo Wild Knights 14-10 to claim the Microsoft Cup and Top League title following an exciting final at Chichibunomiya Stadium on Sunday.

Tries by Juntaro Takemoto and Hirotoki Onozawa and two conversions by Ryan Nicholas helped Suntory to their first piece of silverware since 2003, when they won the last edition of the corporate rugby championship.

Sanyo’s points came from a try by Ryu Koliniasi Holani and a conversion and penalty goal by Tony Brown.

“This is the first time we have won a title in five years,” said Suntory coach Katsuyuki Kiyomiya. “But it is not just the result of the work put in this year. It’s the experiences of the last few years that helped us win today.”

Having lost last year’s final to Toshiba Brave Lupus in time added on, Suntory put aside their usual expansive game and relied on their forwards to grind out the win.

“We knew Sanyo were weak in the maul so we played to that,” said Kiyomiya.

The loss of Daniel Heenan when the two sides met in December also meant Sanyo struggled in the line out and Suntory’s opening try in the 19th minute came from one of a number of losses Sanyo suffered on their own throw-in.

“Suntory were very good at exploiting our weaknesses,” said Sanyo coach Katsufumi Miyamoto.

Takemoto’s try saw Suntory edge ahead 5-3 and that became 7-3 when Ryan Nicholas added the conversion – though he needed two attempts after his first was charged down. Referee George Ayoub, however, ruled that Sanyo charged too early and Nicholas made no mistake second time around.

Holani’s try was the result of some fine interplay between the Sanyo backs and forwards and Brown’s conversion saw the teams go into the break with just three points separating them.

With the wind continuing to have a huge say in the game, Suntory scored the only points of the second half when Onozawa received a well-timed inside pass from Naoya Nomura before slipping a Sanyo tackle and using his pace to go over from 45 meters out.

Sanyo tried to do a repeat of last week, when they fought back to beat Toshiba after the hooter, but the Suntory defense held firm.

“We made two small mistakes and Suntory scored from both,” said Miyamoto.

Kiyomiya, meanwhile, admitted his team had learnt a lot from last year’s defeat.

“Last year we were too nervous and didn’t know how to play finals rugby,” he said. “This year we are all a little older and a little wiser.”

True, but that principle of rush defense was employed by all provinces in last years S14. Its a matter, in my opinion, of adapting defensive lines to cater for speed and it will in a way go back to quite a few years ago when there was a enforced distance!

I watched him play a lot of Wildebeest (Vodacom) rugby 2 years ago – that’s where I met him and expected great things from him. I think it is unfortunate that he hasn’t had many starts – has also carried some injuries and just when he had an opportunity to play a few full games – he got a red card.

  • uhm good morning everyone

the side has not been selected yet

here is the latest press release by muir
The Sharks’ failure to score a try against the Stormers last weekend could cost Brad Barritt his place for Saturday’s crucial Vodacom Super 14 showdown with the Bulls at Loftus at the weekend.
It is understood from Durban that coach Dick Muir is giving serious consideration to dropping his inside centre and replacing him with Frans Steyn, who will move up from fullback. Of course Steyn is no stranger to the position as that is where he played in last year’s World Cup.

Muir hinted after the Vodacom Stormers game that there may be a change as he felt that Steyn was desperate for more work.

“I think Frans was a little frustrated at fullback and that is why we saw him coming up into the line so much and take so many big hits,” said Muir.

Barritt was one of the stars of the Sharks season in 2007 but has not been in great form in 2008. His play at centre appears at times to lack a bit of variation and consists chiefly of him bashing the ball up. He is a talented player and is sure to be back if he is dropped.

Former Springbok wing Stefan Terblanche is the man who will take over at fullback should Muir opt to move Steyn up to the midfield.

He played there in the Currie Cup season for the Sharks and was a success, and he scored a try from that position against the Western Force, a game where Steyn played flyhalf in the absence of Frederik Michalak.

Further anticipated changes to the Sharks side that beat the Stormers could come at hooker and at scrumhalf.

In the latter position there will definitely be a change as Ruan Pienaar has been ruled out with a collar bone injury.

Rory Kockott played well as his replacement in the second half against the Stormers.

The hooker position may be less easy to sort out, however, particularly as this match is against the Bulls, who will be smarting from the mauling their tight five took at the hands of the Crusaders last week.

Bismarck du Plessis is extremely doubtful, while it is unlikely that the Sharks will risk regular replacement Craig Burden, a retreaded backline player, in the starting lineup.

So, we could see former Pumas and Stormers hooker Skipper Badenhorst recalled to anchor the scrum at Loftus.

    Interesting… 🙄

  • Since when does the hooker anchor the scrum? I thought that was the tighthead prop’s job…

My gut feel is we will see a team with Barritt at 12 and Skipper at 2

  • I wish they would cut the bullshit mind games, to be honest. Winning a game of rugby is not about hiding your team from the opposition until 5 minutes before kick off. It’s about naming your team on Monday morning and concentrating on getting your own game right.

You may be right however and they may go with Skipper because he has had more experience at Hooker – but is his injury healed? He hasn’t played for a while and could be rusty?

  • Mike Greenaway on Frans Ludeke:

When they “do what they do do well”, to borrow from that Boy Scout sing-along song, the Bulls usually win, but there is no plan B. Nor is there likely to be under Frans Ludeke.

He won rugby’s equivalent of the jackpot when, on the back of his incredible Super 12 record of three wins from 24 matches, he came from no job to succeeding his good friend, Heyneke Meyer, the excellent former coach, at the helm of the champions.

Hang on a minute, have I just stumbled across something profound . . . Because besides his being Afrikaans and religious, I can’t for the life of me think of anything else that qualified Ludeke for the job.
