Liefling to get the chop?

Reports coming from Pretoria indicate that Bulls supremo Frans Ludeke looks set to spring a surprise for the visiting Sharks.

Pretoria’s favourite son, the only flyhalf in Super Rugby to have a dedicated theme song, Derick “Liefling” Hougaard looks set to pay the price for a woefully inept performance against the Crusaders. The talk is that Hougaard will find himself on the bench this weekend with perennial understudy Morné Steyn given the number 10 shirt for the crunch match against the Sharks.

Hougaard is a very traditional flyhalf and likes to play his rugby a good way back from the scrum. It’s just possible that the Bulls are slowly realising that this sort of play is unlikely to be truly effective under the Experimental Law Variations that are being trialled in this year’s competition. The new game would appear to favour a flyhalf taking the ball flat and creating opportunities for those around him through superior distribution. That has never been Hougaard’s game.

Although Steyn is a far more direct option and does offer a reasonably capable boot, this does start to look a little like the politics of desperation; Hougaard’s replacement has put in some solid performances at Currie Cup level in the past, but has always been found wanting when asked to step up at Super Rugby level. Steyn is a confidence player and if he gets a few things wrong early on, has been known to go to pieces, with both his hands and his defence letting him down badly on such occasions.

He will need to be on top of his game to keep the wiley Fred Michalak in check.

  • You best brace for a Jameson-type raid if you keep on with these Bulls articles.

Adams at 9, FDP at 10 – would be interesting.

  • Good morning all.

I don’t know – I think Liefling has been kicking very well – hasn’t missed many. I think one can hardly blame one player for the poor performance last week.

  • Fish… that would be my call as well.

Ness… this is just speculation based on what one journalist (Vata Ngobeni) thinks. It may not be true.

  • I actually agree with Nessa.

You can’t blame Hougaard for last week. The Crusaders would have clubbed most teams last weekend even US.

I actually noticed that Hougaard ran with the ball a bit more than usual last week and as for his kicking………..I would keep him in the team for that alone.

  • Good morning gents (and Ladies)
Hope Sharks win easily at Loftus.
So after the loss Blou Bulle president will claim he still is backing Ludeke and that they are a united family 😆

  • Good morning HO – I wouldn’t write the Bulls off at all this week. Hope the Sharks aren’t thinking it is going to be an easy game. A game against the Bulls at Loftus is never an easy game.

  • Comment 10, posted at 27.02.08 11:30:34 by Nessa Reply

  • A Bakkies return will be huge for the Brute Bulle. Must say the bit I watch the game, taped it to watch later but after hearing the score decided not to but cant help myself to watch the last bit, Dynasoures the only one worth mentioning.

The Sharks need Keegan Daniels with Botes and if they can produce enough ball and Steyn start decide to spin the ball , they will win this one. Otherwise the Brutes will just dump the Guppies.

Loftus grass is hostile to all non-Pretoria people. But Blou Bulle one-eyed mentality is self-destructive. We at WP have shown many times in the past how to handle this matter.
Guess they have just phoned Heyneke to ask his availability to come back…

  • HO – I know. I have been to Loftus many times and I don’t like it. However, last time we beat them with 14 men, and it was great! The BB supporters leave very quietly and have nothing to say.

I have been to Bloem, ABSA, Ellis Park and various other stadiums and nowhere else do the supporters treat you the way they do at Loftus.

Anyway, I am not staying away just because of them, I will be there. The guys are only coming to Jhb for 2 games the whole season and I am not missing it. Will just take my baseball bat with me!

  • I dont want to give my tipping tips away but look like round 3 just maybe produse the most away wins in S14 rugby in one round.

For the Sharks to win they’ll just have to run from all corners and take it wide like the Saders did, quick loosies to the breakdown. But like I said Steyn and Murray must have slick hands.

  • Comment 16, posted at 27.02.08 11:44:34 by PaarlBok Reply

  • PB – let’s hope so. We need Murray to “pass the ball”!!!

  • Comment 17, posted at 27.02.08 11:47:27 by Nessa Reply

  • Nessa you should find yourself the biggest Boer to help out sussie. Get yourself a pair of horns on your head and you’ll be safe. Myself love the Bulls supporters and they make me jealous.

When we played them in round 1 on Newlands they were all over the show, but they show the true rugby spirit. Reminded me to the WP NTvl days.

  • Comment 18, posted at 27.02.08 11:47:57 by PaarlBok Reply

  • PB – believe me, I have thought it would be much easier going in a blue shirt – or just dressing neutral. But what’s the point? Then I look like I am embarrassed to support my team. So I just take the flack! Sometimes not so easily as others – depending on my mood on the day – and how well my boys are playing.

That’s only because they were on your home grounds – they are also fine at ABSA. But at Loftus it is not quite the same.

I once went there to watch Brent Russell play for WP and so we just wore ordinary clothes as we didn’t have WP shirts – I must say, that was much more pleasant.

  • PB – one more point – they only “showed the true rugby spirit” because they won!

At the S14 Final in Durban it was a good thing that they won as well. I can tell you now!!!!

One little (physically) Indian guy who sat next to Murph to my left spilled his drink on the “BOER” in front of him when we scored our last try. Dead man Walking I tell you.

He is just lucky that Habana scored the try before the guy could get over the rail…………….

And that is not the only case there were a few of those boys who were “soeking for a roll” as Murph would say.

Sad we lost but relieved from a social point of view.

We were at Loftus for the 06 CC match. We won so were not hassled by anyone……….

  • KSA – the last time we were in Pretoria this guy with these big horns on his head (and no front teeth) said to my daughter “if you wasn’t a Shark I could likes you”. I had to tie her down to the chair.

Jokes aside – I hope I am not generalising here – they are probably not all like that.

  • Comment 22, posted at 27.02.08 12:02:07 by Nessa Reply

  • You are right about most but you can always have a Sharkie jersey with the horns as decor. After the game you can decide which one to use. Myself was many a time on Loftus as a WP supporter in my army days. Was there when Morne ditch Naas Botha.

Regarding the Sharks I struggle with my kid, because he love a shark for some reason and always support them. I refuse to take him to Newlands because of his Sharks biased. Never had much draard for Percy and copped a lot of flak from him when Percy did so good last year for the Bokke & Sharks.

Trust me you do get your difficult supporters in any province but the ones that know rugby and spirit will take a loss on the chin and always congrats the winner with a smile.

My daughter has been to Newlands many times to watch the Sharks and says it is one of the nicest grounds to go to – the supporters are very gracious.

  • The thing as a supporter you can enjoy a win. Trust me I went to the All Black test and Crusaders game on Newlands and we win both that games against all odds. Firstly I struggle to find my car after the games and secondly I kots from Brackenfell to Paarl. My Mrs is still mad with me about those. But just as much you enjoy winning, you also have to be nederig (dont know the english word) with the win. Wish you can see this little town with a interschools game yearly. We live together, but for a week we dont talk to each other, but if you win , you only have the saturday night to celebrate , sunday its back to church together and then you forgot about the score and start speculate who will win next year. I learn a lot from my kids in Paarl the way sportmanship works in these parts.

  • PB – I think the word you are looking for is “gracious”.

I was so disappointed when we lost the S14 final – in fact “gutted” was the word there! But I didn’t verbally attack the people around me. Just sulked for about 3 months.
