The University of Cape Town (UCT) has rocketed to the top of the standings in the inaugural FNB Varsity Cup competition, as the new university tournament continue to rock the domestic scene.
UCT, or Ikey Tigers as they are affectionately known, have bounced back from their First Round loss to NWU-Puk (Potchefstroom) and have now won two on the trot in a play-off race that is wide open.
On Monday night the Ikeys recorded a nail-biting 34-31 win over their Johannesburg rivals. UJ, in a thrill-a-minute affair on the latter’s home ground.
Both teams entertained the local crowd to some excellent running rugby, but the visitors stage a comeback of epic proportions.
Trailing 3-24 at the half-time break, the Cape Town students played with the same gay abandon that saw them beat Tukkies last week.
Ikeys enthralled the crowd with some real varsity rugby and while UJ lifted their game as well, the visitors managed to edge ahead for a crucial win.

Cons: Ryno Luus 2

I have just watch the end of the Maties game but hell they were disappointing. Great to see Jacobie Adriaanse in the props! Must say I enjoy this rugby and helps me to cope with the ELVs. It feels like this rules is design for student rugby.
Congrats to the old enemy and rival for topping the log now.

Morning PB
The article had a section about the Maties game but i left it out to see if you had something to say.
Damn you are a good sport.
** Meanwhile the highly-rated NWU-Puk side survived a few tense moments before walking off deserved 31-24 winners over Maties (Stellenbosch) at the Fanie du Toit Stadium in Potchefstroom in another thrill-a-minute FNB Varsity Cup encounter.
With the Maties seven points adrift and attacking all-out in the final minutes, one could see visions of the 31-all draw between the Stellenbosch students and their Pretoria counterparts two Mondays ago.
The competition is only three weeks old, but Varsity Cup is here to stay. It is indeed Rugby that Rocks!
Puk never looked like they could be beaten and they controlled the game for much of the 80 minutes, but such is the nature of the beast that it required some desperate measures in the end to hold Maties out.
The Potchefstroom Institute led 28-10 and 31-17 in the second half and with their strong defence they had the game in the bag … so everybody thought!
The nuggety Andries Mahoney kept the Stellenbosch defenders busy all night and Lolo Waqa and Stoffel Duvenhage scored excellent tries.
And while fullback Corné Meyer had an average night, holding on to the ball on several occasions when tries were beckoning, he had his kicking boots on. He kicked four penalties and two conversions for a personal tally of 16 points.
Maties were magnificently led by captain Wesley Wilkens, who scored a hat-trick on the night.
When the final whistle blew, the Maties camped on the Puk try-line, but hats off to the Institute’s boys who showed true grit to hold out in the face of this fierce, late onslaught.
Maties could have drawn that one, if Sarel Potgieter was not so selfish… 😥
Oh well look like Pukke has always been one over the Maroen machine. This weekend they just have to cope with the Ebersohns at Danie Craven Stadium.
Agree with this part

Will be interesting to see how many of these players will still play for their unis at the end of the series. That alone make it a success and give us a look at the next ELV generation.
Ok its Monday and time for Varsity rugby. Tonite its Ikeys vs UPE and everything to play for with Pukke & Maties breathing in their necks!
Thinkyou guys should open a Easter thread. Those of you that stay at home, switch on the TV, plenty of schoolboy, Varsity Cup & S14 rugby over the weekend on the kassie. This only the live rugby
