It’s a happy 23rd birthday today to two of the loose forwards who starred in the Sharks 29-15 triumph at Loftus on Saturday.
In an absolutely bizarre coincidence, both Keegan Daniel and Jean Deysel were born on exactly the same day, 5 March 1985. Daniel drew his first breath in East London, whilst Deysel hails from the somewhat drier Virgina, in the Northern Free State. With AJ Venter ruled out of Saturday’s clash with the Blues, don’t be too surprised to see this unlikely set of “twins” playing at 6 and 7 respectively.
Also celebrating today is Wildebeest centre Andries Strauss, born a year earlier, but also on 5 March. Strauss, who is the brother of Free State hooker Richardt (and the cousin of other Free State hooker Adriaan!) has had mixed fortune since swapping the orange for the black and white, but will hope that another year of experience will aid in his quest to reclaim the Sharks number 12 jersey.
Youngster Pat Cilliers turned 21 on Monday, while Ruan Pienaar will be 24 on Monday 10 March. The “old man” in the group is prop Robbie Harris, who will reach the princely age of 26 on the 3oth.
Happy birthday, guys and best of luck for the season.

it’s my mom’s birthday too! Happy birthday, Ma!
Happy birthday to all – it is also Brent Russell’s birthday today – seems like a popular day.
And happy birthday to your mom as well RD.
And our fellow blogger Villie.
With AJ Venter ruled out of Saturday’s clash with the Blues,
Has that been confirmed. 😯 🙁
I though it was all still conjecture.
Oh and happy Birthday guys. 😳
I would also like to send out birthday wishes to Oom Piet…and then an anniversary wish to Uncle Bob and Auntie Tilly.
In addition the Piper twins for next week and Billy Bob for the following week….. 😉
Oh and what about “hello Ness”? 😆
but will hope that another year of experience will aid in his quest to reclaim the Sharks number 12 jersey.
Are you SERIOUSLY trying to bring ANOTHER 12 into the argument? 😆
😳
Hi Nessa.
😳
KSA… I guess it’s not really confirmed, as such, but you can take it as confirmed.
Hi there – thought you were ignoring me for a minute!
RD – seriously … ❗
Okay lunch time for me guys.
see y’all later.
Are you SERIOUSLY trying to bring ANOTHER 12 into the argument?
Why, do you think we have too many? Don’t get try_time involved… he wants Paddy Power at 12 too 😉
My info is that he won’t play, Ness.
it takes a brave (or very foolish) man to come between KSA and his lunch 😉
RD – I think I chased him away!
…and cousin Karl wants to wish Nanna well after her fall and tell his girlfriend Poppie he loves her….
we get the message, DP 😉
Just pulling your leg Rob……Happy birthday Mrs O, have a good one!!!
No Bis, no AJ, … not good news!
05.03.08 11:01:53 – Nessa
Nessa is the definite now?
Hey everyone…
Happy birthday to the Sharkies, former Sharkies and all the Sharkies’ mamas, uncles and all that…
Gee – I forgot about paddy power…looks like the Sharks can have a team of 12’s. 😉
DP – looks like it.
With AJ Venter ruled out of Saturday’s clash with the Blues,
Has that been confirmed.
I though it was all still conjecture.

Surely from a “sauce”
BS – let’s have a play off for No. 12. 100m sprint, game of darts?
Bismarck is not definitely out… but it sounds like he is still in a fair amount of pain.
Perhaps we were spot on with out original story after all 🙂
damn….
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO EVERYBODY !!! 😆
Charlie… what do you know about “sauces”? 😉
todays press has no certainty about aj bismark or ruan
Eina, those “bruised” ribs 🙄
05.03.08 11:09:11 – Nessa
Definitely darts cos TT says kicking and pace are not important for 12s… 😉
RD – it does look like you were right.
Both the protagonists in the big match of this weekend’s round of the Vodacom Super 14 are waiting on injuries before finalising their teams for the Absa Stadium showdown.
Click here for our fantastic 2008 Super 14 SMS subscription package (SA only)
The Sharks went without Ruan Pienaar in their 29-15 win over the Vodacom Bulls at Loftus last weekend, and it appears that the Springbok scrumhalf may still be absent for the Blues match. Word from Durban has it that Pienaar’s collar-bone injury has taken a while to mend and he may not be ready.
At least in Pienaar’s case his absence should not be too keenly felt as Rory Kockott was good as a replacement against the Stormers two weeks ago and even better in the victory over the Bulls.
A man whose absence could be felt though if he does not recover from his rib injury in time is hooker Bismarck du Plessis. The Sharks forwards came off second best for long periods of the Pretoria game and it did appear that the rugged presence of Du Plessis was missed.
The biggest problem area though was the lineouts, particularly in the first half, when Skipper Badenhorst struggled to find his jumpers before being replaced at halftime by Craig Burden, retreaded to hooker from the backline.
The performance of the pack will be the key for the Sharks against the Blues, who have been devastating on attack this season and who Sharks coach Dick Muir readily concedes are the form team in the competition.
“I think the Blues are the team that have best adapted to the ELVs while we have played badly in three games and won so I would say they must start as favourites for this match,” said Muir.
It was in the upfront battle coupled with their tactical kicking and well organised defence that the Sharks secured an upset win over the Blues in Albany last season. But since then they have lost Springbok skipper John Smit to France and now possibly Du Plessis for this match.
Then it should also not be forgotten that this will be the first game where the Sharks will be without the massive presence in the engine room of stalwart lock Johan Ackermann, who played his last game of rugby last weekend.
AJ Venter, who has played second row at international level, could be the man to replace him, but there is also Steve Sykes and the claims of Albert van den Berg to consider.
Venter is reportedly also battling with injury and has to be cleared to play.
The Blues have lost an important player in the form of fullback Isa Nacewa. The former flyhalf has brought a different dimension to the back three since his switch to the last line of defence and he will be missed against the Sharks.
Nacewa injured his knee in the match against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein last weekend and will be replaced in the Blues’ travelling group by Tom Smith.
Tamato, chutney, chilli, tabasco etc… 😆
dont jump the gun fella,s theres hope yet its only wednesday
Gi’me hope Johanna… 🙄
SL – that’s for sure. We probably won’t know until the team announcement (or even then they still bracket them in in case they are fit). We did well last week without Bis or AJ – so let’s hope!
BS – darts it is then! 😉
good morning nessa ))
i agree dick never rushes the selections
05.03.08 11:12:45 – sharks_lover
As Naas once should have said…”De Natal team is never finalised on Wednesday but only when you see the okes run on the field.”
Hi SL, it is starting to get a bit annoying though – he is starting to behave like Rassie did last year. Announce your team, deal with the injuries, and get on with it.
Nessa… AJ did play last week 😉
Someone in Durban posted this on the Sharks site just now:
“Having spoken to Bismark this morning, he is definitely going to play on saturday. If not starting, then second half.”
Hmmmm …
05.03.08 11:21:58 – robdylan
That’s how much of an impression his play made on Nessa…
Agree with Nessa. Enough with the mind games already!
RD – I meant Ruan! 😳 What is it with me – having all these blonde moments – or maybe it is just old age. No comments from the peanut gallery please. 😳
DP – I must say, I haven’t been that impressed with AJ. So it is showing hey? 😉
how does Bismarck know that?
I’m sure if you spoke to him last Wednesday, he was determined to start against the Bulls
RD – exactly!
RD – he was even at the game. I wonder why they brought him with if he wasn’t playing?
That person’s name on the blog is “SayNoToQuota”. I don’t even want to get into a discussion with someone who calls themselves that.
Nessa – let’s rather give the darts to Skip – teach him how to throw straight…
so he could show off the cool black polo shirt…
I really like those… would love to get one.
#
RD – he was even at the game. I wonder why they brought him with if he wasn’t playing?
05.03.08 11:28:56 – Nessa
He’s from Bethlehem…Pretoria is an exciting place for him to be…
SKIPPER! Grrr… that kid makes me mad.
He played hooker for Affies while I was at Boy’s High. Back then, he knew how to throw.
Eddie Coetzee was in the same team. John Smit and Eddie used to scrum against one another in the derby matches.
Aaaah – the good old days. I’m getting nostalgic here.
DP – okay, now I understand! 😉
We don’t want to be giving darts to Skipper – he will peg the poor person standing to the side of the board!
RD – love Eduard. Such a sweetie pie!
rd- even Affies wouldn’t take him in their lineup now 😈
Affies… what a great rugby school. Of course, I hate all of them, but man, you have to respect what they’ve achieved.
Not too many guys from Affies have played for the Sharks. Apart from Eddie and Skipper, do you guys know of anyone else?
Just those two according to Wikipedia dude…
what article on wikipedia helped you come to that conclusion?
The only article I can find on Wikipedia….is a long winded doctorate by a Dr Gert Otto called “Why Pretoria Boys are infinitely better then Affies in just so many ways”
Bismarck is not definitely out… but it sounds like he is still in a fair amount of pain.
Was that a muscle that was bruised or a bone that was bruised. 🙄
Definitely darts cos TT says kicking and pace are not important for 12s…

BTW I saw Barrit’s “involvement” in that first Sharks try. His involvement was a stumble into a tackle and letting teh ball get recycled for the Sharks. 🙄
KSA – stirring again? 😉

Can we at least agree OR disagree?? 😉
KSA – you are not too far away for me to smack! I will send Kette a message to klap you for me.
Dive Pass… your memory is far too good 😉
Just went and edited the Wikipedia entry on Boys High to remove the piece of imaginative fiction that listed Albert Hertzog as an old boy.

I was lulled into a false sense of confidence thinking she couldn’t get to me.
I forgot she can pass a word or two to Kette. 😳
😳 It was a moment of weakness. 😳
I am still hoping Kette is going to take me with her to see the tigers!
Nessa I am reffing in the Bahrain Midnight 10’s tournament on the 28th March.
i will drop him a mail before then.
Our day trip to the tiger is booked for Wed 9 April. 😎
Oh and even 😎 er Saffas no longer need Visas to enter Thailand, you just get your entry stamp on arrival. 😎
KSA – no problem. I chatted to him yesterday and asked him if he had heard from you and he said no.
“Our” day trip – does that mean I am not going with? 😥
You are just lucky that I am going to be on a ship that day and wouldn’t be able to go anyway!
KSA, you going to be in Thailand on 9 April?
Snap!
Quinny YIP!!!!!
From 4 – 10 April.

now imagine what amazing tries he could score when he doesn’t stumble. shows how talented the guy is that he can setup tries even when he trips. frans couldn’t even setup a try on his current form even if he had a 3 man overlap. 😆
6-19 April
Quinny where you gonna be?
We will be in bangkok
Staying at the Shangri La hotel.
Having dinner at Cabbages and Condoms restaurant on the Friday night.

The Shangri la where we will be staying when we are there has a little foot massage parlour downstairs.
Here is an extract from Kettes musings on the family blog. 🙄
As many of you may know I headed off to Bangkok for a NVS conference on Sunday night. Well first up aren’t they so nice to arrange a conference in such a wonderful spot hehehe. We arrived at about lunchtime (Bangkok time) after a very noisy and uncomfortable flight only to find our rooms were not ready. They offered to give us upgraded rooms – but at our cost 🙁 naturally we declined. We were told we’d have to wait at least 90minutes….mmmm now isn’t that convenient, meant we could nip down the street to a fabulous little massage place I frequented the last time I was here. Ahhhh just what the doctor ordered, a 60 minute foot massage – includes about 10minutes of back and shoulder for only 250Baht. Of course we had time for a little shopping before heading back to get settled into our rooms. By this stage we’re more than a little peckish (4:30 Bangkok) so we meet at the restaurant for late lunch early dinner and surprise surprise, I have pork chops 🙂 a little more of heaven. Then its perfect timing for us to walk about a bit more shop shop shop, pick up some cokes, beers and snacks from the 7-11 and well on our way back to the hotel, who wouldn’t stop for a massage before heading up to bed ?! The next two days spent conferencing, very long but enriching days. Wednesday night, drinks with friends – all the administrators had arrived for their section of the conference and ………another foot massage 🙂 Thursday morning its up early, last breakfast to include pork products for a while, and out shopping. And then its off to the airport and home to family.
mmmmmm I love Bangkok, hopefully the family will join me in April for the Spring conference and we can enjoy some of the sight seeing touristy things together then. And of course I shall introduce them to the magic of massage
I plan on having many massages! 250 baht, that’s nothing, around £4.
Can’t wait!
Quinny
Apparently at Lavana a FOUR hour massage is 2500Baht. 😯
WHAT would you do with a FOUR HOUR massage?????????????????? ❓ 😯
Four hours? Bliksem, I don’t think you’d be able to stand after that. The traditional thai massages are meant to be quite forceful – not sure if that’s the best word to describe, I think 4 hours could get quite painful….
Kette has just told me via MSN we are going to the tiger sanctuary on the 8th.
She is trying to find time in her schedule for a half day at lavana. 🙄
And here’s me always thinking she goes to Thailand to work. 🙄
KSA – you are not too far away for me to smack! I will send Kette a message to klap you for me.

lol, it’s all a ploy!
You guys going for elephant rides at all?
damn, anyone know where sharksworld website gone. seem to keep coming to the holiday blog. 💡
Not surte about the elephants Quinny.
Kette is in conference most days but the children can do organised activities and I think there are elepahant rides in there somewhere.
I know a visit to the temple IS in there.
TT. 🙂
Okay ladies I need help here.
Foot massage 90 min 550 baht
Oil massage & herbal ball 90 min 1,250 baht
Facial massage 60 min 1,000 baht = 4 hr 2,520 baht
What is a Herbal ball. it sounds painfull 🙄

Well they started talking about Barritt and the conversation naturally flowed to people on holiday… 😉
4 hr facial massage???!!!!
What you should know about Herbal Ball Massage:
Herbal Balls
Herbal Balls are made from “Samunphray” which is a variety of herbs found in the great nature of Thailand. Each herbal ball has slightly different ingredients depending on the effect. Most of the balls include:
Camphor: Its cooling and tingling sensation helps invigorate the skin.
Lemongrass: This has antiseptic properties to help clear up the skin.
Turmeric: Its antiseptic properties help soothe and cleanse irritated skin.
Prai: This ginger is a natural moisturizer that relieves muscular aches and pains while softening the skin.
Kaffir lime: These miracle limes help tone the skin.
Tamarind leaf: Used in herbal steams as the acidity is thought to help the skin absorb the other herbal ingredient faster.
Menthol: Know as “Pimsen” in Thai, this is a mineral with a sharp mint smell similar to that of Camphor. Its refreshing smell helps ease respiratory problems coughs and blocked sinuses.
Benefits of Herbal Massage
Smells very refreshingly like a cedar or Japanese cypress.
Relaxes stiff muscles by reducing pain, tension and spasm.
Improves blood circulation.
How to use the Herbal Ball
IMPORTANT: If the client is experiencing swelling, heat or redness in the muscles or joints accompanied by pain you DO NOT USE THE HERBAL BALL. Wait 24 to 48 hours and see if condition improves before attempting this treatment.
Heat the ball in a steamer or hot pot before applying onto the body. Be sure to check the temperature of the balls before applying to the skin. The application should be done in conjunction or following the massage. Start on larger muscles. Sore muscles are to be worked first and then the hot herbal ball compress applied to the problem spots. The heat relaxes the aching muscles and helps to open the pores, allowing for better absorption of the herbal ingredients.
Press the hot herbal ball directly onto the skin or place a thin cloth between the ball and the client’s skin. Using the ball, work the problem areas with compressions and rolling techniques or for an overall treatment lightly press and roll the ball along the sen lines.
One herbal ball can be used for about 5 to 7 minutes depending on room temperature. It is customary to use two balls per treatment. When the first ball cools down, place it back in the steamer and remove the second ball. When using two balls the treatment should last approximately 15 minutes.
And of course, KSA, I am looking forward to the FOOD….
Well they started talking about Barritt and the conversation naturally flowed to people on holiday…

WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THAT???????????
I have absolutely nothing to say to you KSA and now you as well Quin. 🙁
DP – now THAT was brilliant!!! You are sharp. 😈
Aahh, I can almost feel the sun!
Quinny same here.
Food is going to be great.
Think I am going to be forced to take a tea break.
I better stop it….just now TT is going to think I have something against him personally, which is not the case.
BTW I saw Barrit’s “involvement” in that first Sharks try. His involvement was a stumble into a tackle and letting teh ball get recycled for the Sharks.

If you look at the video you will notice that Barrit stumbled when he was 6m from the line. I suspect Steyn would have been scoring and not setting up if HE was the 12. 🙄 😉

DP – you are right. TT can take it though, believe me! I personally don’t have anything against Brad.
especially considering it was meisiekind he stumbled into. 😉
Tea break???? 😯 😯
Haven’t you just come back from lunch?
You got any job openings there?
05.03.08 14:11:06 – Nessa
I actually don’t have anything against Brad, I just believe our backline would work better with a playmaker at 12……hey if Brad proves me/us wrong I would be over-joyed, he is a born and bred KwaZulu-Natal boy and they are far and few between in the Sharks line-up (luckily OO isn’t on this blog or he would latch on this statement).
KSA – no, just don’t want to hang around and listen to you talk about Thailand – it depresses me. 😥
oh okay 😳
Thailand?? Where is that?
I thought this was a rugby blog. One that just announced that oine of the Stormers’ leading players is flying home from tour. 🙄
Rugby? What’s that?
KSA – and believe me, you don’t want to work for a firm of attorneys, very boring!
This blog could be renamesd Foot fetihes unite, sorry, change that to Foot and leg (for you Nessa) fetishes unite.
hmmmmmmmmmm
😯 What’s this Thailand talk
Easy on Big Brad now…I hear he’s our best defensive centre.
BS – long story. My daughter and I have always wanted to go to the sanctuary in Thailand to see the tigers (the white ones specifically). KSA (and now Quin) are both going next month and I am very jealous.
🙁 sorry then Nessa – hope they’ll take lots and lots of pictures then…
So Tiger is into tigers 🙄

……I hear he’s our best defensive centre.
05.03.08 15:00:07 – blackshark
Defensive centre?….next thing you will be suggesting the Sharks sign Dries Stoltz… 😉
BS – yes, Tiger most definitely loves tigers – but her nickname on the blog comes from the Tiger Shark.
DP- I didnt invent the defensive centre concept but BB super-fans insist that his creativity lies in his defence. Brad to create 4 tries on Sat! Im not sure for which team yet.
