SuperBru Tipping Competition: Round 4 Results

Time again to review the movements on the all important tipping leaderboard. Let’s have a look at the standings in our very own Sharksworld pool in the score prediction game over at

Game 22: Highlanders v Hurricanes

In an ugly all-New Zealand slug-fest, it was the visiting Hurricanes who prevailed by four points, winning 10-6. About two thirds of the pool picked the correct winner here and there were an impressive 13 margin points handed out. The closest prediction was Canes by five, which netted a share of the bonus point for three tipsters, Western Sauce, Debs and Ghost10.

Game 23: Waratahs v Brumbies

A wet game and a controversial winning score. It’s all action this year! The home side took this one by seven points, winning 24-17. The consensus here was a narrow win for the Tahs and margin points were far too numerous to actually count. Well done to Dive Pass, though, who was the only one to get the exact margin. 2.5 points for you, sir.

Game 24: Bulls v Lions

Most of us backed the Bulls to win and it was thanks to Loffie Eloff’s timely reading of that literary masterpiece “Losing Against 14 Men For Dummies” that we got the result we picked (although, in my case, not the result I wanted). The Bulls won by 14 points, prevailing 31-17. Congrats go to three tipsters who shared the bonus. Boofy had the Bulls by 13, whilst Ollie and PaarlGimmie though the men from Pretoria would win by 15.

Game 25: Chiefs v Cheetahs

Oh, but the poor bloody Cheetahs just can’t seem to buy a win. They lead throughout, only to lose (AGAIN) in the final seconds to a penalty. 22-20 and Chiefs by two was the correct result. Only six margin points here (I guess we expected the Cheetahs get stuffed) but the bonus was shared by IceBabe and fattmann, both of whom picked the Chiefs by 4.

Game 26: Reds v Stormers

Well done Stormers! A bonus point victory on the road to really get their campaign started. 34-16 and the Stormers won by 18 points. Nobody got close enough for the margin point (in fact, half of the pool got the winner wrong!) but Whindy grabbed the bonus with his pick of Stormers by 12. If he’d just gone with 1 more point he would have got 2.5 out of this one.

Game 27: Sharks v Blues

Sharks, you bloody beauties! Most of us kept the faith and most of us went with a low score difference, so the final result of Shark 22 – Blues 17 and a difference of 5 suited us just fine. The bonus point was split an impressive 8 ways here, somewhat diluting its value!

Game 28: Force v Crusaders

The Saders were forced (ha ha) to work a lot harder for this result than many of us expected. They prevailed 29-24 in the end, winning by 5. It was the inimitable Ghost10 who got this one spot on, to further consolidate his lead.

Congrats to Ollie, Kandas, Whindy and Namboer, all of whom bagged an ultra-sweet 2 extra points for getting all 7 winners right this week.

Our leader, Ghost10, is really starting to pull away here, but well done to Kandas for surging into second spot with a fine haul of 11.1 points this week. MVP for the round, by the skin of his teeth, is Ollie, with a brilliant return of 11.3.

Here is the complete top 10:

1 Ghost10 38.83
2 Kandas 34.46
3 Villie 32.25
4 PostmanPat 31.00
5 SauronShark 30.63
6 IceBabe 30.33
7 robdylan 29.50
8 ZinZan 29.25
9 Debs 29.08
10 Ollie 28.33

Since Ghost10 is writing a weekly piece for us, I am going to shamelessly claim two of the top ten spots as belonging to Sharksworld contributors. Our other so-called experts are languishing in the following positions:

23 Sandshark 25.08 Still behind his missus and falling each week!
25 PissAnt 23.83 Rooted in 25th spot – that’ll teach you to pick the Blues
30 Western Sauce 21.83 Up two places for the big man from the Cape
36 PJLD 11.50 No points this round… Claytie, are you still playing?

  • Hi all

Robdylan, thank you for the kind words – yes, it was a good weekend for me and in the end I am glad that I could gain the smallest of margins on Ghost 10. But, like Kal-El has said (do I hear a Naas echo somewhere?) this competition is not won in March! From my own calculations, you will need at least 110 points going into the play-offs to be anywhere near in contention. So, Ghost10, you are a formidable opponent but don’t listen to KSA and book your tickets yet. The sand dunes in the Kingdom have taken it’s toll on his lateral vision abilities – I mean, he can’t even see the penguin in the Sharksworld picture! πŸ™„

If you allow me (and, please, this is not being presumptuous or arrogant) I will share a little secret with all of you with regards to this competition – see it as in the spirit of good sportmanship. Last year, halfway through the World Cup, I was in 26th place in the RW pool and I started using this system eventually winning the pool. (Not to say that it will work for all of you though!). So, here goes:

    1. YOU CAN NOT DISCARD PREVIOUS RESULTS AND STATISTICS! History has a cunning way of repeating itself – obviously applied with a good dose of common sense. Let me give you 3 examples: 1. Saturday was the 5th time in a row that the Stormers beat the Reds! Third time in a row at the Reds’ homeground. All the leading contenders in this pool went for the Reds to win which not only surprised me a lot but also gave me my break this weekend. Secondly, my statistical system showed me that the Highlanders would beat the Hurricanes by 2 – common sense told me the Hurricanes would take it but, because of the statistics, not by much. You can imagine how I [email protected] myself when, in the dying minutes of the game, the Highlanders were constantly on the attack and it looked like they could score! Thirdly, the statistics showed that the Sharks would take the Blues by 5. Which happened and, although you lot are all Sharks supporters, you could not go for another result. The Blues were not going to take a 3rd game in a row in SA. Not against the Sharks. Common sense.

    2. The single most important factor in this year’s SuperBru competition is the Grand Slam points. It is going to become increasingly more difficult to predict the winners in the coming weeks as players are getting used to the ELV’s, teams are sorting out their squads, etc., etc. You have to get the winners right in each of the games which will give you an additional 2 points. That is 9 points in a 7 game weekend! The bonus points will come by itself. A good example here is the previous weekend where, going into the last game (Bulls/Sharks) both myself and Ghost10 had the previous 6 games correct. With 12 minutes to go, JP Nel messed it up for me and Ghost took the Grand Slam points. Did the Bulls win that game, it would have made at least a 6 points difference between the two of us – I would have gained 3 and he would have lost 3. Putting me in the lead. So, everything can still happen and at this stage of the competition a single game can shoot you up in the rankings.

    3. Talking about bonus points. Try to give yourself a bigger spread for margin points. Unless you had a dream the previous night telling you that a team is definitely going to win by 1 point, rather go for 5. That gives you a 10 point spread (5 both ways) for margin points instead of the 6 point spread you would have had should you have gone for the 1 point margin.

    4. Do NOT go for draws. You can only lose. I lost at least 3 points in the first 2 rounds going for draws.

Like I said, please don’t see this post as being arrogant and it might not work for you but there is still a long way to go, the great level of competition amongst all in both pools, the fact that the predictions will become more difficult in the coming weeks, and with the Grand Slam points playing such a major role this year I just thought I would share some thoughts with you.

It is great playing against all of you and good luck for the coming weeks!

(Sorry for the long post) πŸ™‚

  • Some good advice, Kandas… I’ll definitely take some of that into consideration the next time I make my picks. I try and not worry too much about the bonus points for now, i reckon those will take care of themselves if u get the result right.

My SI fantasy league team took a big hit this last weekend though… I was 2nd overall in the global standings and I had a shocking weekend and dropped to 14th now. But I’m treating it as just a bad weekend, and not dropping too many of my players just yet.

Thanks Clay, we’ll see how it goes. What u training tonite?

I’ve leaned out quite a bit over the past few months, bodyfat % almost single figures now, so I figure it’s time to put on a bit of bulk. So I’ve slowly been adding squats, deadlifts, pullups, and dips to my routines every time I go.
