Bulls’ Injury woes deepen

Three of the Vodacom Bulls’ players who were in the starting XV against the Reds, are currently under rehabilitation as a result of injuries that they picked up on Saturday.

Bryan Habana injured his shoulder, Fourie Du Preez is struggling with his hand and Wilhelm Steenkamp was replaced at halftime following a chest injury.

The BBRU reports that the coach Frans Ludeke said on Monday the medical team is working around the clock to get the players back on the field, but he did not want to speculate as to who will be available for the next game against the Chiefs and who won’t.

“We are obviously hoping that Fourie, Bryan and Wilhelm will recover in time and I am optimistic that they will. We would like to select the strongest team for the game against the Chiefs because we must get back on the winning path as soon as possible.”

James van der Walt injured his hamstring against the Reds and consequently had to fly back to South Africa. Ludeke said Van der Walt will be on the sideline for a week or two, but they didn’t want to go into the match against the Chiefs with only one hooker and that is why Bandise Maku is on his way to Australia.

Ludeke said after studying the video it was clear that they screwed up a number of try scoring opportunities.

“We did not convert our opportunities into points and I think they outplayed us at the break downs. The Reds put us under pressure at the rucks and we were not competitive enough.”

  • As if these guys don’t have enough trouble already.

  • only one hooker? Which one would that be? van der Walt was the only hooker they had in their squad anyway. Kuün is a flank and now Maku is a prop.

  • nope – nothing new. He was due to join them for their 3rd or 4th week match… I think it was the 3rd week against the Blues.

There’s been no further update on that, though, so I doubt it’s happening.

  • Look, I reckon they honestly have no flipping idea when or if he’ll be back, but they can’t really admit that to the fans.

  • As much as I am not a Bulls fan – it would be a real tragedy if Spies doesn’t play again. He is a real talent. But his health must come first and I think everyone is a bit nervous to take the chance.

  • For years the Bulls camp has been sing praises of the huge pool of players at their disposal thanks to their academy and sucessful age group teams. A few guys go overseas and a few injuries and these guys look pathetic.

  • If JP Nel is in the starting XV against the Chiefs, Ludeke and Russouw should hand in their resignation letters after completing the Australasian tour. The guys has done enough to play himself out of contention. The same applies to Wynand Olivier. Its time introduce new ideas, where are those new signings that SARugby Magazine were profiling in December/Jan?

    Welcome to Sharksworld.

I agree on JP Nel. On Wynand Olivier, I differ slightly. He looked pretty damn good when he had Morne Steyn on his inside and had to step up becasue they were a man short.

I would give Olivier another go at 13 provided he has Steyn on his inside. If as is rumoured Habana plays 15 this week and Steyn is at 12 then they may actually have a decent backline.

  • As time goes by I discover more and more people out there who like the Bulls less than I do. 😉 🙂

  • It was Maku, Rob is being either facetious or making an error. 😉

Someone (I think Rob) said that Maku played prop at age group level.
