Lions prop Ross Geldenhuys has been cited for a “knee strike” during Friday’s Super 14 match against the Highlanders in Dunedin.

Geldenhuys was cited by Citing Commissioner Mike O’Leary for using his knee to strike Highlanders prop Jamie Mackintosh in the 38th minute, according to

Geldenhuys will appear before Judicial Officer Nick Davidson QC at the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) offices in Wellington on Monday, April 7 with the hearing due to start at 16:00 local time.

The Highlanders won the match 29-20 after leading 14-3 at half-time.

Eugene Maqwelana started the match in place of Geldenhuys, but was substituted after just 30 minutes.

Maqwelana was clearly out of his depth and was made to suffer by Mackintosh at scrum time.

The Lions now face a troubled week ahead of their next match against the six-time champion Crusaders in Christchurch.

  • they are screwed. Maqwelana was shockingly out of his depth and Geldenhuys is sure to get at least 2 weeks for this.

  • eugene is possibly the worst SA TH in S14 rugby, i was actually getting quite worried about whether he was going to be folded in half, geldenhuys did better when came on but highlanders frontrow is not too shabby at all, got a bit of a temper geldenhuys, not a bad thing for a TH but the replay looked very dirty … loffie must be pulling his remaining hairs out.
