Daniel named in Sharks team

The Sharks have named their line-up to take on the Brumbies in Canberra on Saturday and the good news is that Keegan Daniel has been passed fit to start at open-side flank.

The side sees two changes to the starting fifteen that played against the Highlanders last week; Rory Kockott will start at scrumhalf ahead of Ruan Pienaar, while JP Pietersen replaces the unfortunate Waylon Murray at left wing. Bradley Barritt and Frans Steyn will again be the centre combination outside of Fred Michalak, while Odwa Ndungane and Stefan Terblanche remain at 14 and 15 respectively.

An injury cloud over tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis means BJ Botha starts for a second week running, in an unchanged pack that includes Bismarck du Plessis, Beast Mtawarira, Johann Muller, Steven Sykes, Daniel, Jacques Botes and Ryan Kankowski. The elder du Plessis has been named on the bench, but is bracketed with Deon Carstens as the front row replacement. In an unusual move for the Sharks, there are only four forwards on the bench, with all three of Pienaar, Murray and Adrian Jacobs named as backline reserves.

Sharks team:

15 Terblanche, 14 Ndungane, 13 Steyn, 12 Barritt, 11 Pietersen, 10 Michalak, 9 Kockott, 8 Kankowski, 7 Botes, 6 Daniel, 5 Muller (capt), 4 Sykes, 3 Botha, 2 B du Plessis, 1 Mtawarira
16 Burden, 17 J du Plessis/Carstens, 18 van den Berg, 19 Venter, 20 Pienaar, 21 Murray, 22 Jacobs

  • Expect to see Daniel ruled out at the last minute, IMO…

  • I agree Rob…

Hope Dick is doing a Rassie… and has more common sense than to play someone that is not 100% against George Smith and co…

  • Either way it is 8:40 in the evening in Canberra so I suspect that the Brumbies won’t be releasing their team until tomorrow 👿

Will have to wait to find out about Mortlock then 👿

  • So IF Daniel doesn’t play then Deyesel will probably move to the bench. STILL a damn good side then.

  • Muir says he’s thinking of using Ruan at 10 off the bench( latest Sharks site article)… maybe everyone gets to see what they’ve been waiting for at last… should be interesting

  • Spyker

I would also like to see that, could be interesting.

I also note that there is NO mention of Daniel in the Sharksrugby article………..Is Dick Muir keeping quiet so as not to draw attention to Daniels inclusion or IS there no issue surrounding Daniel and he is 100% ready.

    Only time will tell.

So was I, until last week when it backfired horribly. I just hope it was because they were paired in the wrong place.

  • Against the Highlanders, two tries were scored through defensive lapses out wide between Steyn and his wing, but coach Dick Muir says they were not Steyn’s fault.

“The problem was Waylon (on the wing) was ahead of Frans, which he shouldn’t have been, and that caused the hesitation,” Muir said.

Not often a coach will make a statement like this laying the fault squarley at a certain players feet.

  • KSA- I know what you mean…

But Waylon was dong very well defensively till they switched him to the wing…so it’s not entirely his fault that he was caught in no man’s land.

I think Muir is laying the blame on HIMSELF here…

  • Except of course when you think the other player is going to defend that channel and he isn’t. Then Defence changes a bit.

  • having both Murray and Jacobs on the bench is a pretty strange move. I guess WM is covering 13, 11, 14 while AJ is covering 12,13,11,14…

15 is covered by Steyn, Pienaar, Pietersen and Ndungane
