Ludeke to back youth – UPDATED

Changes are coming down in Bulls country, at long last. One wonders if they’ll be enough to see off the Highlanders this weekend?

Reports coming out of Pretoria suggest that the embattled Bulls coach, Frans Ludeke, looks set to bench a number of high profile non-performers, in the hope that the hungry youngsters he picks in their stead will put in better performances. Lock forward Danie Rossouw and blindside flank Pedrie Wannenberg seem to be the main culprits.

An exciting loose trio of Deon Stegmann, Wikus van Heerden and Pierre Spies seems to be on the cards, while young Willhelm Steenkamp looks likely to partner Bakkies Botha at lock. Prop Werner Kruger looks set to come in at tighthead, with the experienced Rayno Gerber demoted to the bench.

In the backline, we have already reported that Fourie du Preez will be out, replaced by young Heinie Adams. His partner will be Morné Steyn, as Derick Hougaard (himself under an injury cloud) joins his namesake Francois on the bench.

Zane Kirchner is also struggling and should he fail to be passed fit, look for the exciting Tiger Mangweni to make his Super 14 debut for the Bulls.

Probable Bulls team

Zane Kirchner, Akona Ndungane, JP Nel, Wynand Olivier, Bryan Habana, Morne Steyn, Heini Adams, Pierre Spies, Wikus van Heerden (capt), Deon Stegmann, Wilhelm Steenkamp, Bakkies Botha, Werner Kruger, Derick Kuun, Gurthro Steenkamp.
Replacements: Bandisa Maku, Jaco Engels, Rayno Gerber, Danie Rossouw, Pedrie Wannenburg, Francois Hougaard, Derick Hougaard.

UPDATE – The BBRU have announced the side to play the Highlanders this weekend and it is exactly the same as the Probably team above.

  • 🙂

i am glad you wrote your own piece on this article Rob or else I may have had to point out this cockup to you.

As a result of the probable changes to the team, the Bulls bench looks potent, if the replacements play to their full potential, with Bandisa Maku, Jaco Engels, Rayno Gerber, Rossouw, Wannenburg, Francois Steyn and Hougaard.

Have these guys been talking to our favourite player agent again. 😉 🙄 I see he mentions that BJ is on his way to the UK. 🙄

  • I will be very surprised and AGAIN dissappointed if mangweni doesn’t get to play.

Ludeke opted to rather have NO Fullback on tour than play Mangweni. Heavan only knows what poor Mangweni did wrong to be cast aside like that.

  • How did the wildebeests still make the quarterfinals of the VC??

Fokkit this reminds me of last year,we went into the quarters unbeaten and got wipped by an inspired Leopards side.

  • I see the Boys are making it clear that Ludeke won’t be kicked into touch.

    Board Bullish about Ludeke

The Board of the Blue Bulls Company (Pty) Ltd (BBC), the commercial arm of the BLue Bulls Rugby Union (BBRU), has reiterated that coach Frans Ludeke will not be fired.

Ludeke and the Board met in Pretoria earlier this week to discuss the defending Super 14 champions’ dramatic slump, which has seen then drop to 13th on the standings with just two wins in nine starts.

  • FdP has a hand injury and DH a buttocks injury. What kind?
Who’s the culprit? Het DH op FdP se hand gesit of het FdP aan DH se bam gevat?

First it was overuse of the groin for FdP, now his hand is also packing up.
