New Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has included a number of players who did not compete in the Super 14 tournament in his training squad for a training camp to be held in the Cape.
Dan Retief of Superrugby reports that De Villiers’s first squad since succeeding Jake White as the Springbok coach was named by SA Rugby president Oregan Hoskins in Durban on Saturday night — including overseas-based World Cup stars John Smit, Victor Matfield, Percy Montgomery and Butch James.
Also included were Isma-eel Dollie, who played under De Villiers in the Springbok under-21 side, even though he was released from the Stormers’ Super 14 group; Kabamba Floors, who dropped out of the Cheetahs side, Hilton Lobberts and Heini Adams, who have seen limited action with the Bulls, and Chiliboy Ralepelle, who has been recovering from a knee injury.
De Villiers did not include players from the Sharks because of their continued involvement in the Super 14 pla-offs. Players he requires from the Sharks will be added once their involvement in the Super 14 ceases.
De Villiers however was at pains to point out that he is busy with a sifting process. “I want to emphasise that this is a training squad, not a test squad,” he said. “I have selected certain players to work with them in a squad environment alongside the country’s finest players, and others because I felt I had not seen enough of them during the Vodacom Super 14.
One of the big surprises is a call-up for the young Lions lock Gerhard Mostert, but De Villiers has kept the World Cup squad intact — the absentees being retirees, Os du Randt and Bob Skinstad, the injured Andre Pretorius and Wayne Julies, Gary Botha, who is overseas.
The new coach has also ensured continuity by including a number of young players with previous involvement with the Springboks under Jake White while there are also recalls for Joe van Niekerk, Meyer Bosman, Tonderai Chavhanga and Jongi Nokwe.
A number of highly promising young players who stood out in the Super 14, such as Duane Vermeulen and Zane Kirchner, have also been drawn into the mix.
The training group, which assembles on Wednesday, May 21, is as follows:
BACKS
Heini Adams, Gcobani Bobo, Meyer Bosman, Tonderai Chavhanga, Jean de Villiers, Isma-eel Dollie, Fourie du Preez, Jaque Fourie, Peter Grant, Bryan Habana, Butch James, Enrico Januarie, Conrad Jantjes, Zane Kirchner, Louis Ludik, Percy Montgomery, Akona Ndungane, Jongi Nokwe, Wynand Olivier, Earl Rose.

Bobo!??!
Bobo!???!
Wow
After today Mujati!??!….Heinke scrummed him in his ass…
Overseas players
Butch James
Percy Montgomery
John Smit
Victor Matfield
Surprised about Nokwe…
@Hmmm (Comment 2) : @Hmmm (Comment 1) :
thats cheating hmmm …. i’m not that many more comments in front of you, you have to make legit ones or its no fair 😉 😆
If Odwa does not make it then the Nokwe inclusion is unfair….
This should have been the first comment. 😉
LET’S NOT FORGET THIS IS A TRAINING SQUAD.
hehehe Naas has commented that when S14 is done we can adjust the numbers to at least 60 to include the Sharks squad 😛 😉
Who is Mostert..??
Rose ????
Nokwe 🙄
Floors and Lobberts over Baywatch??
Very happy to see Ludik in there , other than that looks a great squad with lots of talent.
As Naas says: The group could go up to 60 when the Sharks are announced. 😉
No real surprises, save for Dollie (favouritism?) and Mostert.
Question on Mujati though – i presume he is now FULLY SA-QUALIFIED?
ie) he’s not contracted to the Stormers via any sort of work permit/visa?
Would be good for WPRU/SARFU to confirm before there are any question marks that cost the Boks further down the line.
@CoffeeShopBok;-) (Comment 11) :
I wanted to ask as well but wa sa fraid i’d be laughed at. haven’t got a clue.
Anyone else help us maybe? Who does Gerhard Mostert play for
@KSA Sharkette (Comment 7) :
Have you past me again!??!
@KSA Shark © (Comment 14) :
LIONS….JINNE
@KSA Shark © (Comment 14) :
LIONS!!! He’s a lock/loose forward!!!
@Le Requinny (Comment 13) :
I think he may be there for the experience at the moment and by the time he qualifies he will slot straight in.
Not sure when he qualifies though
so only 3 sharks to make it…
Kanko,Steyn and Pienaar ???
No Murray/Jacobs/Barrit/Botes
Message to Baywatch & Brossouw:
Come to the Sharks & we’ll make you Boks!!!
But seriously, it’s a real slap in the face for Baywatch in particular – he is a superb player & should definitely be in an extended BOks training squad 👿 !
@KSA Sharkette (Comment 7) : My surprise at Bbo’s inclusion is very ligit….
…suropised Schalk Brits isn’t in the Backs squad… seeing as though he played at centre for most of the Stormers-Lions game…
Hmmm Lions you serious I have not seen him play 😯
Botes and Baywatch are very unlucky..Hell Floors has hardly played this year..
There are 42….out of 45?
Does that mean there will only be 3 Sharks?
@Hmmm (Comment 15) : was gonna post “you’re hot on my heels 😈 ” but I see we’re even now 😕
please 😆
calling it a night now though so don’t stack up too many against me, keep it a fair contest 😉
@CoffeeShopBok;-) (Comment 23) :
Botes can still make it….no Sharks have been announced…
(Watson, Skeate & marginally Bekker too). Were obviously too many centres to include Skeate.
@Hmmm (Comment 24) : thats what I said, doesn’t leave to many spaces BUT as Naas said…..anything could happen, either replacements or numbers increase …..
@KSA Sharkette (Comment 25) :
Hey….I cannot help that I hold it against you that you married to KSA….
@Hmmm (Comment 21) : now you’ll probably want another post to spell his name right too 😆
@KSA Sharkette (Comment 28) :
They did say it could be 47…does not leave much space…
Muller, Bismark, Odwa….who else deserves to be in….cannot think of anyone….
@Hmmm (Comment 31) : Oh Botes…
@Hmmm (Comment 29) : would think I should qualify for pity points or something then 😉 😆
KSA
😳
you know I love you honey
@Hmmm (Comment 21) : @KSA Sharkette (Comment 30) :
Sorry Bobo…..LoL
@Hmmm (Comment 34) : 😆 😆 😆
@KSA Sharkette (Comment 33) :
Ha-Ha…..true…but I aint feeling generous today….LoL
@KSA Shark © (Comment 5) : glad for 3 out of 4
Comment # 1000 for the day
@KSA Sharkette (Comment 25) :
Hey….I cannot help that I hold it against you that you married to KSA….
Comment 29, posted at 17.05.08 21:33:56 by Hmmm
@Hmmm (Comment 36) : seems my beloved is though, and this is the thanks I get huh KSA 😉 😥
@Hmmm (Comment 32) :
And Steyn and Pienaar….
That makes 6 Sharks…so I think Botes will be the unlucky loser….
I think there will be more than three Sharks in there.
You have to consider that the squad would be selected in such a way that they could still train if the Sharks or Stormers were not there.
I suspect there would have been a similar number even if the Stormers had made it.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 38) :
And such an important comment….
@KSA Shark © (Comment 41) :
so JP Nel might have cracked the nod 😯 ?
@Le Requinny (Comment 43) : Noooooo please no….
@Le Requinny (Comment 43) :
No they would have chosen Ronnie Uys 😉
Right – I’m off to celebrate. See you folks later & have a great what’s left of your B-day Oubaas!
JW Jonker was good most of the S14!??!
YaY….the Stormers are out….
@Le Requinny (Comment 46) : Cheers…
@Hmmm (Comment 48) : play nicely now 😉
@Le Requinny (Comment 46) :
thanks Quinny.
Okay am off as well guys, some of us work on Sunday mornings 👿
Sharks are going to have a home final…..
@KSA Sharkette (Comment 50) :
I am really happy bout that after all there comments this week including today….
@Hmmm (Comment 52) : and KSA WILL NOT be going home for it so …..it could be ours in the bag 😉 😎
Cheers everyone….
@KSA Sharkette (Comment 54) : LoL
That is not fair….let the man go….
@KSA Sharkette (Comment 54) :
man she is mean!!!!!!!!!!!
@KSA Shark © (Comment 57) :
Very KSA….Very
Q U O T A’ S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Upon reflection of this season… Botes’ name should be the top of that list of loosies!
One word… ROSE!
Ralepele?
Holy sheet… BISMARK??????
I was only jesting when I suggested the 45 would not include the Sharks 😯
I know I’m old and all the rest of it 😉 but this article confuses me a little.
Springbok call-up for Monty?
17/05/2008 19:01
Perpignan’s Springbok Rugby World Cup-winning fullback Percy Montgomery has refused to reveal on Saturday whether he would be returning home early to resume his international career.
The 34-year-old, capped 94 times, had signed a season long contract with the French title-chasing outfit, but he has been called up by the Springboks for the June 7 Test with Six Nations Grand Slam winners Wales.
Montgomery, who has scored 93 points in the 13 matches he has played for Perpignan, is to meet with club president Paul Goze on Monday.
Perpignan lost 29-15 to championship leaders Clermont on Saturday.
The article was published at 19:01 SA time. More than 2 hours before the Bok training group was announced.
So.
Did the author let the cat out the bag by saying that Monty was included and Monty has said he will not confirm whether he is coming even though he was called up?
or
Did the author make an error and it should have been something along the lines of “but IF he has been called up by…..” and Monty wouldn’t let the cat out the bag by confirming that he was called up?

Some serious lightweights in the mix… a good big oke will always have the better of a good small bloke… they’ll get slaughtered…
Aus, NZ, etc all have backs averaging over 90kgs…
I think the guys who eventually make the team will not be any of the light weights
NICE Midfield weights

@bryce_in_oz (Comment 72) :
On the bench I’m afraid. 🙁
Those two are way better at the moment and you HAVE to go with the form guys.
KSa I like the look of your backline. 🙂 This is such a big group so its better to look at who missed out. Myself think Hanno Vermaak and Baywatch should be at least in the group. Specially Vermaak who I rate highly as a scrummy.
Someone just pointed out Adams weight (or lack therof) to me.
Here are his stats from the Bulls site.
Heinie Adams
Position Scrumhalf
Height 1,65m
Weight 78kg
Date of Birth 29/5/1980
@KSA Shark © (Comment 75) : Fork. He is miniscule.
@robdylan (Sharks Forever!) (Comment 76) :
And the stats I posted on Sunday tried to make him even smaller 😉
Don’t be fooled, size matters. 😈
@racheltjiedebeer (Comment 78) :
more of a technique man myself 😀 🙄 😳
😆 😯
@KSA Shark © (Comment 79) : No comment. 😉
😐
Big, good skills, and able to go the distance.
All important to be successful on the rugby field. 🙄
