Good and bad news for Cheetahs

The Cheetahs have received good and bad news. Good news is Duanne Vermeulen does not need surgery, but the bad news is that Rory Duncan is leaving for Japan.

Promising young Cheetahs eighthman Duanne Vermeulen does not need neck surgery. Medical experts say fears that his career could be in doubt are unfounded.

Pieter Jordaan writes in Volksblad that the 21-year-old Vermeulen was sent home from the Springbok training camp in the Western Cape at the weekend and it was feared that he may need surgery.

However, Free State team doctor Org Strauss announced the good news on Monday while he was preparing to leave for Pretoria to join the Blue Bulls later this week.

A Bloemfontein neurosurgeon, Dr Dan Hugo, has examined Vermeulen and has found that the injury is not as serious as the one that Springbok flank Schalk Burger suffered in 2006.

Vermeulen has an injured disc in his neck. Burger had a vertebrae injury.

“It is an injury that many players encounter,” Strauss said. “Duanne will just have to rest for about four weeks.

“He’ll receive physiotherapy and medication and should be ready to play again in six weeks or so.”

Although Vermeulen’s participation in the training camp has been cut short he should be available to play Currie Cup rugby for the Cheetahs later this season.

That will give him an opportunity to bid for a place in the Springbok team to tour Europe late this year.

However, the Free State fans have also received some bad news.

Rory Duncan, one of the stalwarts of the past few seasons, will be leaving in June to play in Japan.

This comes shortly after the announcement that Duncan’s lock partner, Springbok Barend Pieterse, will retire at the end of the season.

The 30-year-old Duncan has signed a two-year contract with the Jubilo Yamaha Club.

“It will be a little different playing over there, but it’s an exciting prospect,” he said on Monday.

  • Definately good news on Vermeulen, but i think losing Duncan is a HUGE blow to this team. (and any SA team that may have thought about approaching him)

  • While on the subject of ‘Org’, heard this when I was only tad taller than knee-high:

Two notorious brothers, rather unattractive even by country bumpkin standards, from the Welkom area were traveling in the depression days.
They were hauling a pig they got from a friend, when unexpectedly confronted by road block.
As they did not have a permit to transport the pig, a plan had to be made and quickly they decided to have the pig don a shirt, hat and glasses and have it sit up front with them.

Two officers came round to inspect their vehicle and asks to identify themselves.

“I are Klaas and that is my brudder Wimpie. And in de mirril we have…” The pair had forgotten to decide upon a name for their passenger, but Wimpie fortunately drilled an inspired elbow into the pigs ribs.

“Org!” the pig squealed in reply.

“Org yes, we picked him up not far behind and I forgeet him name Sir. Can we ride now?” asked Klaas rather relieved.

The officer beckoned them to proceed after a stern warning about hitch hikers and a rather dirty glare in Org’s direction.

As they drove off he mentioned to his colleague, “Jeepers, but those three are horrendously ugly!”

“Yes,” replied the colleague, “old Org might still be alright but those other two…”
