The South African Rugby Union has announced the SA Emerging squad to defend the IRB Nations Cup next month in Romania.

The international representative tournament, which features a blend of A-teams from top unions and full test teams from developing unions, will again be played in Bucharest from 11 to 20 June.

Peter Jooste, convenor of the national selectors, confirmed that the 26-man squad will assemble tomorrow in Cape Town. Former World Cup-winning Springbok Chester Williams will coach the team.

“This is the strongest possible team we could pick considering the demands of the Vodacom Incoming Test Series, Springbok Sevens and SA Under-20 duties. The Nations Cup will give many of these players a first taste of international rugby and they will be motivated to make the most of this opportunity,” explained Jooste.

The squad includes three players who last year helped the team to Nation Cup honours – Howard Noble (Vodacom Free State Cheetahs), Hilton Lobberts and Sangoni Mxoli (both Vodacom Blue Bulls).

The SA Emerging squad:
Justin St Jerry (Xerox Golden Lions), Sarel Pretorius (Wildeklawer Griquas), Isma-eel Dollie (Vodacom Western Province), Rocco Jansen (Vodacom Blue Bulls), Morgan Newman (Vodacom Western Province), Howard Noble (Vodacom Free State Cheetahs), Bjorn Basson (Wildeklawer Griquas), Joey Mongalo (Vodacom Blue Bulls), Lollo Waka (Leopards), Rudi Vogt (Pumas), Jody Rose (Xerox Golden Lions), Richard Lawson (Vodacom Western Province).

Janro van Niekerk (Boland Cavaliers), Greg van Jaarsveld (Border Bulldogs), Phillip Lemmer (Vodacom Free State Cheetahs), Kobus Grobler (Xerox Golden Lions), Hendrik Roodt (Vodacom Blue Bulls), Zolani Mofu (Boland Cavaliers), Hilton Lobberts (Vodacom Blue Bulls), Devon Raubenheimer (SWD Eagles), Jody Jenneker (Natal Wildebeest), Sangoni Mxoli (Vodacom Blue Bulls), Jacobie Adriaanse (Vodacom Western Province), Berend Botha (Vodacom Blue Bulls), Carel Hoffman (Vodacom Blue Bulls), Robert Kruger (Leopards).

  • Clear message here. Unions have not released any players with serious Currie Cup aspirations

  • Prefer them using okes like this if done properly… Bok B’s should be playing in the SH league if it weren’t for the CC…

Who are the locks in that mix… some real bottom of the barrel in the backs…

  • @bryce_in_oz (Comment 4) : Roodt and Grobler will be first-choice pair. Pretty decent combo.

  • THIS is what an emerging Bok side should look like. We should be saying WHO is this guy, WHAT position does that guy play.

  • Wrong name though KSA… ‘Boks’ should not be used… clearly this is the also-rans for the CC not to mention minus the U21 RSA side currently away…

If they can run this ‘palooka-Euro-B-divsion’ at a profit (yeah yeah I’m dreaming innit) when the VC is not in operation… then why not I suppose… otherwise a waste of time…

  • Ok…I think this is a win-win situation for everyone…

We get to keep our players…and the team is made of “Emerging Boks”…even though they still have a long way to go before they reach the surface.

    Go E-BOKKE!

  • @bryce_in_oz (Comment 16) : Come on, while I don’t rate Chester, he was supposed to be given a bunch of Springbok leftovers, not a bunch of Currie Cup leftovers. What the hell is he going to do with those? Fail?

  • We could have given him a fair chance and when he failed said “Sorry, but you’ve been given ample opportunity and you’ve failed”. Now people can still say “He’s never been given a decent chance.”

I’d rather not have any loopholes for him to get the Bok job one day.
