Surely BJ MUST go?

We’ve been saying it, the media have been saying it and now even John Plumtree has chimed in with his opinion. Peter de Villiers needs to set aside his stance on foreign players and call BJ Botha to join the tour of New Zealand, immediately.

Botha was superb in a losing effort for the Sharks this weekend, thoroughly stuffing his opposite number, Jaco Engels at each and every scrum. He put in a huge amount of work on defense and was busy with ball in hand. In short, he underlined why he is South Africa’s premier tighthead prop.

CJ van der Linde and Beast Mujati between them were annihilated in New Zealand by the experienced Tony Woodcock. van der Linde has never been a great scrummager and to make matters worse, he appeared to go off injured. Mujati has been woeful in the scrums ever since making his test debut against Wales and it didn’t go any better against the best scrumming no 1 anywhere in the world (bar Heinke van der Merwe, that is). BJ has proved over the course of numerous Super 14 campaigns that he has Woodcock’s number. There surely cannot be any more sensible call than getting him onto a plane as soon as possible.

In other news, it appears as thought John Smit may be out for the next two games. If that is the case, then God help the Boks, because Victor Matfield proved again on Saturday that he isn’t a captain’s ass. He’s barely even a rugby player these days…

  • Beast Mujati?

  • @blackshark (Comment 4) : I would support them picking Beast over Steenkamp, as I feel he is superior in every single aspect of the game.

Unbelievable!!! We get outplayed at flyhalf and upfront, so let’s change the right wing?!
To call this article clueless would be an insult to clueless people!

  • But agree….both vd Linde and Mujati did badly…

In vd Linde’s defense…he did get 2 free kicks and a penalty over Woodcock…and held if steady-ish on a few occasions…but was still clearly dominated by Woodcock…

When Mujati came on a really felt bad for Ricky and Joe…geez it was dif getting that ball back…the scrum spun around…yes literally spun around..
How Ricky and Joe between the two of them still got the ball I don’t know…

And I don’t blame Watson for losing that one ball…managing to keep possession on all of those balls would have been masterful…that’s why I said Joe and Ricky were masterful in that…
The ball was hardly in and then Ricky is passing from the back…

Mujati…sorry but you need to go home….

CJ…you’re versatility is the only thing keeping you there…although I must say you do scrum a lot better on the other side…so how versatile are you then actually?

  • Apart from the scrum, I thought that Butch had his worst game in 2 years. He couldn’t kick for shit.I know he was behind a losing pack but that is no excuse for kicking the ball 15-20 metres from a penalty.

  • I agree Pokkel.

Players who need to step up: Habana, Victor, Bakkies and Butch.

And our entire front row of course. 🙄

  • @Pokkel (Comment 16) :

Steyn was no improvement….considering Butch’s play over the last year,I think we have to let him off having a bad day at the office, Carter had his at the world Cup.

Steyn must focus on being a centre or fullback at the moment, he is too slow and poor in his decision making for a fly-half.

  • And yet Steyn gets selected ahead of Grant at 10.

Must be Dick Muir’s influence.

  • @Dive Pass (Comment 19) :

I actually think Steyn was a vast improvement when he came on…the AB’s as part of their game plan did not kick the ball out…and a few of those 60 meter drop goals of Steyn would have forced a tactical change which would have given the Bokke more possession in front of their forwards…
And Steyn also attacked teh advantage line…and he broke Carter twice…

I just think it was a losing battle by the time he came on…

His passing was also A LOT quicker than Butch’s….

And I have never been fond of Steyn at 10…never said a positive word other than his game against WP in terrible conditions a season or so ago…

But he is more calculated in every game…and asks a lot of questions from the oppo that they had not answered as I am sure they’d liked to!??!

  • I think Butch was sick or something!??!

He did not look himself at all…

And just before he made that 10 meter penalty kick he was coughing badly….

  • Comment 24, posted at 07.07.08 10:59:40 by Hmmm Reply

  • Hmmm

You left out the part where Steyn’s clearance kick was charged down…

He kicked away possession even though we were 8 points behind and needed to score more than a converted try to win.

    It just doesn’t make sense.

  • @wpw (Comment 25) : The bottom line is that we still don’t have a flyhalf the likes of Carter or Gitau..but Butch is still the best we have.

  • I know Pokkel.

Giteau would still probably struggle in wet weather.

Let’s see how Giteau goes against us this year.

I feel sorry for him and the hits that he’s going to have to take from Butch…

  • @wpw (Comment 25) :

Yeh he was charged down again…but that has nothing to do with the questions he asked…

And he did not kick any more ball away than Butch did or Carter for that matter…

The quality of Carters kicks and the AB backs just made their kicks count a lot more…

I am sure Cater kick most of all…we tried running from weird places on occasions…Butch and Steyn…

And when Steyn broke the line there was no support and came to nothing…cannot blame Steyn for that…
Fact is he asked more questions…

And Barring that charged down he did nothing wrong or nothing that was not better than Butch…if he slotted that drop goal where nothing else was on…we would have been within 1 score at that time….
Our territory was also better…and we looked the better attacking side when he was on…we just did not have enough to break the AB def that was in a class of its own on Sat…

I think we should bear in mind that those 4 played the ELV’s for the first time and at Test level…

Remember how confused the lot in the S14 looked in the first few games…till the Blues caught on and then only a few rounds later the rest…
