Springbok Meyer Bosman’s hamstring injury has forced Free State Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske to take the bold step and include SA Under-20 centre Robert Ebersohn for Saturday’s Absa Currie Cup match against the Sharks in Bloemfontein.

The inclusion of the youngster, who also a Sevens Springbok, is one of three changes to the starting lineup that lost to the Blue Bulls at Loftus last weekend.

At hooker, Jaco van Zyl gets a rare chance to start after the Springbok call-up to Adriaan Strauss, whose cousin Richardt Strauss moves onto the bench in Van Zyl’s place.

David de Villiers replaces Flip van der Merwe at lock in an effort to bolster the Cheetahs’ lineout.

Springbok flank Kabamba Floors is back on the bench after sitting out last weekend’s match for disciplinary reasons.

The team is:

Bevin Fortuin; Eddie Fredericks, JW Jonker, Robert Ebersohn, Jongi Nokwe; Chris Rossouw, Neil Powell; Schalk van der Merwe, Hendro Scholtz (capt.), Heinrich Brussow, Barend Pieterse, David de Villiers, Kobus Calldo, Jaco du Toit, Wian du Preez. Replacements: Richardt Strauss, Phillip Lemmer, Flip van der Merwe, Kabamba Floors, Tewis de Bruyn, Hendrik Meyer, Fabian Juries

  • This Cheetahs side does not look invincible, but then they are playing the combined Westville and St. Augustine’s Hospital ER survivors team thinly disguised as the Sharks are they not ❓
I would not wager any money on this game, and my pick on Superbru will not be made with my heart… although my head was wrong last week with the Boks as was the week before with both the Sharks and the Boks..

  • You sound like Piet de Villiers there ; but seriously Ice when you live in Joburg you live with a few risks! When it comes to the Sharks I have been lived in hope since 1996 the longest 120 years of my life 😥

  • Why don’t we sign Richardt Strauss then? He’s only on the bench even when Adriaan Strauss is with the Boks and to me he’s the better of the 2!

  • I find the difference in skill level between our various rugby levels unacceptable. Could it be a general coaching problem? Or just a plain SA head problem?

  • Not really OO. 😳

If he stepped out of line then he should be punished.

I just find it strange that he can’t seem to get a start at the Cheetahs even though he has been one of their star players since 2005.

  • @wpw (Comment 17) :

Brussow was still maturing in 2005, read Ali Coetsee views on him

With both Smith and Vermeulen out- we are predictable in the lineout- Lions play with 4 Cheetahs with 2.5 lineout jumpers.

Add to that some personal issues that he had in the S14 to sort out

    Shit happens boet

time tide and sewege wait for no man.

Still, he is a gOOde rugby player

just hell for a 5.10 body to be successful in winning collisions week after week.

Can he really start with Smith, Vermeulen and brussow fit?

Is he really beTTer than Scholtz- who were the main deck spaNNer for the Cheetahs before BruSSow arrived?

He is a small form factor ball caRRier, great rugby player- but suFFers from the same physical reality check as Lukas X.

    My opinion!

  • OO

Smith and Vermeulen are not available so why can’t he start???

    Scholtz is overrated imho.

He is obviously one of Naka’s favourites… (didn’t they play together?)

I suppose our opinions differ. He is probably too small for test rugby… I still think he shouldn’t be collecting splinters on the bench.
