To play in a rugby test at Newlands, with his family watching from the stands, is a dream that is about to come true for Springbok centre Adrian Jacobs.
Liam Del Carme reports in Beeld that Jacobs has never played in an international in Cape Town, but he should be in South Africa’s team for the Tri-Nations match against New Zealand on Saturday.
“It’s a big match and I’m looking forward to it,” Jacobs said after scoring only his second try in six years for the Springboks at the weekend.
“I hope my parents, my wife and my children will be there to support me. I only hope it won’t be too cold,” the Sharks midfielder said after making a man-of-the-match contribution to the victory over Argentina.
Jacobs is not necessarily out to silence his critics, even though there were many of them when Springbok coach Peter de Villiers selected him earlier this year.
But he has not put a foot wrong since returning to the national squad.
“One can never satisfy everyone,” he says. “Criticism is strange. One must try to turn it into something positive.
“I never complained. People are sceptical. But they actually want you to do well.
“It helps if the coach supports you. I hope I am repaying him. Peter is a wonderful coach. Whether you’re big or small, he supports you.
“I can only thank him for fetching me from the wilderness.”
Jacobs has turned out at inside centre as well as outside centre and he does not have a specific preference for either position.
“I play where the coach needs me. I don’t really mind playing at either 12 or 13. It’s a great privilege to play for South Africa.”
It was also a great feeling to score a try for South Africa, he added.

Newman seems to be struggling to settle in. Reckon must be hard to settle down when the flyhalf is inept and the forwards are getting hammered. Do believe he has potential as a ball playing 12.

I used to be and might still be (Jury is still out) one of the naysayers.
Adi is not the best we have at 13, but he is the best available at the moment and I have no problem with him being there at the moment, but once Fourie is fit the I am afraid if he even comes close to his regular form, Adi will have to sit on the bench.
And the sad thing is that he might be in a situation of either in the Starting XV or out of the 22 completely. My reason for that is that Steyn or someone similar (Pienaar maybe) may be a better option as they offer more flexibility in term of options for the sub to be used as.

I know a lot of people out there rated Brad better than Steyn at 12 this season but I just feel if a player is the Bok selection in a position then he should be the 1st choice at his province. IMO Steyn should have been the 12 at the start of the S14 and then he would have been in a MUCH better position now and not have been wasted as he has been this year, and in that light now that Jacobs is the bok 13 he should be played ahead of Murray when he comes back home.

What I am trying to say is that a player who has the bok jersey in a certain position sewn up should have the same jersey sewn up at his province.
This system where the Bok 12 had to play everywhere but 12 for his province just messes up SA Rugby. Steyn is a classic example and if it happens to Adi as well then I will be pissed. Murray is having an average season and only just last week started showing some decent form. When Adi comes back to the Sharks he should be the automatic 13.
