Boks rule out change of style

The Springboks will stick with their expansive style of play in Saturday’s Tri-Nations match against Australia despite calls for a more conservative approach.

“For us to turn back now on what we want to go do, it will mean we don’t trust ourselves,” South Africa coach Peter de Villiers told a news conference on Friday.

“I think the players will get to grips with what we want to play, and I believe at the end it will be a playing style the whole world will fear,” he added.

“We have the bulk and the speed, we have everything. We just have to put it together so that they utilise the opportunities that arise by rounding off the moves.”

News 24 reports that De Villiers came under fire after last week’s 19-0 defeat to the All Blacks in Cape Town but the coach was firm in his commitment to a more inclusive style of play.

“I must make it clear, we want to play a total rugby expansive game, we want to throw the ball around, we want to use all of our players so that they can enjoy the game, and so that the spectators can enjoy the game,” he said.

“If you look at our starter moves, and the way we manage to break the line, it’s all coming into place. But after that, the decision-making from there is one thing that the players are not used to.”

An open approach to attack promises exciting rugby and the ability to score from anywhere on the field, but the world champions have produced just three tries in four Tri-Nations matches.

Coach Robbie Deans made five changes to the Wallabies team that succumbed to New Zealand in Auckland with flank Rocky Elsom, fullback Drew Mitchell, scrumhalf Sam Cordingley, lock Dan Vickerman and tighthead prop Matt Dunning named to start.

The return to fitness of Elsom and Vickerman boosts Australia’s lineout arsenal while Mitchell and Cordingley replace the injured Adam Ashley-Cooper and Luke Burgess respectively.

A victory over the Springboks in Durban or Johannesburg next week will set up a series-decider against New Zealand in Brisbane in September.

De Villiers’ charges will have to hit the mark in both matches, scoring at least four tries in each, for the Springboks to have any chance of winning the series.

Australia are second with nine points, five behind New Zealand, while South Africa are third with five points.

  • I believe at the end it will be a playing style the whole world will fear,” he added.

I thought we had a playing style the whole world fears already?

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 1) : Me friend, that style has been lost somewhere along with Mannetjies and those okes. Only, it was not as much a style of play rather than pure commitment and pride.

  • Let me say this about PDV. I do not think he is on a wrong course here, for once he achieves what he preaches now, he will be one sensemaking dude. However, I think he is a bit like me here, talk about his visions as if it is here allready, while other people are still stuck in reality. PDV may even become great when he is allready forgotten! 🙁

  • I agree that this could be the way (style) forward but think he should have implemented it on the EOYT.

Play now with a similar style to what the team are used to with a tweak here and there and then on the EOYT make it CLEAR that he will be playing with the new style and then also in the future.

This will achieve a magnificant amount for him in term of support and it will shut his detractors up big time.

Imagine if PDV coached a team to the 3Ns victory right from the start. 😎 Who would then really complain if he said he was changing the style of play and to be patient? NOBODY (Okay maybe Piet Pienaar and a mate or two)

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : Which is what makes it a bit sad, but I guess it comes with the job. 😕

@KSA Shark © (Comment 7) : I personally understand his impatience, but that it will cost him, at least untill it falls into place…Let’s just hope that he becomes lucky timewise istead of a victim of his own visions.

  • The only issue I have though is that the last guy who tried this was out on his ear in a jiffy. (Harry Viljoen)

Let’s just hope that similar patience as was shown with Clive Woodward in the UK, when he told them he would achieve very little success in the begining because he was changing things, will be shown to PDV.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 10) : Had a read at the other side and it would seem that we may as well have started off our morning there, for we do not differ too much from them. But then, it is not their writers I have such a pain with, it is the bloggers. I would love to invent a totally different alphabeth as to our excisting abused one.
