A Springbok prop and a Wallaby flank were both cited for dangerous play following Saturday’s Tri-Nations match between South Africa and Australia in Durban.
CJ Van der Linde was spotted diving head-first into Aussie scrumhalf Sam Cordingley in a dangerous attempt to clear him from a ruck.
Rugby 365 reports that the Bok prop was penalised by New Zealand referee Lyndon Bray for the offense, but received no yellow card after the offence occurred eight minutes into the match.
Rocky Elsom also faces a SANZAR Disciplinary Committee hearing after being cited by Citing Commissioner Steve Hinds of New Zealand for tackling the jumper (Victor Matfield) in the air, four minutes after the half-time interval.
Both men will appear before judicial officer Nick Davidson QC (New Zealand) at the offices of the KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union at 09.00 local time on Monday.

Hey Guys please spare me the moaning when CJ gets a few weeks rest and Nothing happens to Elsom. 🙂
I didn’t see CJ’s incident but I did see Elsoms and it was a nothing more than playing the man in the air at the Lineout so don’t think he will get more than a warning.
If CJ did as described the he should get a well deserved rest. He is a walking penalty anyway.
From the News 24 article on the citings: Matfield said afterwards that he had a slight groin niggle from the incident
Is there any chance we can get some sort of an award to Elsom either before or during the judicial hearing?

CJ van der Linde:
Shocking discipline and very lucky not to be carded for a head-butt early in the game. He should be cited and will deserve it if he is banned. There was also a shoulder charge off the ball and a late tackle. –5/10
Let’s hope the judicial officer doesn’t find out about the others. 😳
Let’s just hope we don’t end up with Mujati starting
@robdylan (Comment 5) : Who else will there be though.
What side does Guthro play on?
CJ will definitely be banned. No arms head first… 🙄
@McLovin (Comment 7) :
And that’s just on the one they have cited him for. 😳
Jy moet lekker rus, hoor!
@KSA Shark © (Comment 6) : he’s kak as a loosehead and has never been tried on the other side.
I’m afraid Jannie is the only man for this job.
mujati to start next week.cj nearly killed samwise
Hope CJ gets a lengthy ban.
There’s no place for such behaviour, and such blatant idiocy, on a rugby field, definitely not when you’re representing South Africa.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 1) :
It was shocking KSA.
He just dived in over a ruck, from the side, head first.
He went horizontally over the ruck, head first.
Both men will appear before judicial officer Nick Davidson QC (New Zealand) at the offices of the KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union at 09.00 local time on Monday.
Okay so how long can it possibly take to say? “Don’t bother asking for mitigating circumstances. Your 4 week suspension actually helps your team!”
Do these guys have their extended family as well as all their team mates in their trying to be character witnesses?
What is taking so long
I actually thought Fransie might get sited…
@I’ce (Rebel With a Cause) (Comment 15) : me too , deserved a citing more than Elsom.
@I’ce (Rebel With a Cause) (Comment 15) :
for?
his hair style??
i musta missed it? what he do?
When he took that knock to the pit he had no business playing that man, that dude was still just about sub orbital when Fransie went in like a moron.
@PJLD(RIP Bernie Mac) (Comment 19) :
nah i didn’t see anything wrong with that though.
nothing wrong at all?serious?
CJ has won some hearts in Pretoria…
@PJLD(RIP Bernie Mac) (Comment 21) :
I thought the tackle was fine.

Bad boys told to ‘wait’ for DC outcome
Mon, 25 Aug 2008 15:32
The two bad boys of last Saturday’s Australia versus South Africa Test, Wallabies flank Rocky Elsom and Springbok prop CJ van der Linde, will have to wait a while longer before they will know their fate.
Elsom fronted a SANZAR (South Africa, New Zealand and Australia Rugby) disciplinary hearing in Durban on Monday, after being cited for foul play during the Wallabies’ 27-15 win over the Boks in Durban. Elsom was called before the hearing after pulling down Springbok lock Victor Matfield in a line-out.
A decision following the two-hour hearing was deferred, and may only be announced on Tuesday.
Van der Linde was also cited for foul play, after charging head first into an opponent at a ruck, with the decision on his case also deferred.
A decision on both cases might still be announced on Monday, but it is possible the results may only be known on Tuesday.
* Meanwhile the injured Wallabies pairing of lock Daniel Vickerman and inside centre Berrick Barnes are returning to Australia on Monday.
The pair, who both sustained shoulder injuries in the encounter in Durban which have ruled them out of Saturday’s re-match against South Africa in Johannesburg, are scheduled to arrive back in Australia on Wednesday afternoon.
The loss of the two players has been partially compensated by the arrival from Australia of Western Force skipper Nathan Sharpe, who is scheduled to join the team in Durban later on Monday, ahead of the Wallabies’ penultimate Tri-Nations fixture.
The Wallabies side to play South Africa will be named on Thursday.
Lock/back row forward Hugh McMeniman, who was a late withdrawal from the historic win due to illness, is on the road to recovery and is expected to be fit for selection.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 20) :
Honestly? The guy was in the air and Fransie went in right under him – making no attempt to stop the move?? I dunno about that??!! Or is it just a bias opinion? 😉
I really think that could have turned out bad if the guy fallen the wrong way… 😐
I saw Schalk throwing a couple of punches too…but I guess those were harmless…
@blackshark (Comment 26) :
Hey BS – I saw a that too – a couple of times infact – the ref talked to him once about it…as far as Iknow, you not allowed to do that, harmless or not??!! Opinion?
@I’ce (Rebel With a Cause) (Comment 27) : They probably let it slide because he didn’t really make any contact…although it looked a bit dodgy on replay…naughty scHULK…
@blackshark (Comment 28) :
Lets try a third time
@I’ce (Rebel With a Cause) (Comment 25) :
Sorry i have posted two replies now but my connection keeps failing 👿
I thought the tackle was legal at first look. I will see if i can get another look at it somewhere.
IMO the guy WAS in the air but he was in the air becasue of taking a kick not becasue of receiving one so any issues with tackling the guy in the air are actually null and void and will “revert” (for want of a better word) to the tackle being late or illegal in any other way.
I don’t think it was late at all as it looked to me as if Steyn was committed and couldn’t have stopped if he tried.
I think Leinster must be more nervous that PDV about CJ’s suspension (when it comes)
CJ is supposed to leave immediately after the 3Ns to go and play at Leinster. So any suspension he gets will effectively hamper Leinster and not the Boks. 😆
