SA v Aus: Bok player ratings

Written by Andre Bosch (KSA Shark ©)

It was another shocking day at the office for the World Cup winners, as Australia consigned South Africa to another season at the foot of the Tri-Nations table with a 27-15 win in Durban on Saturday.

As has been the case for most of the year, there is no structure to the Springbok game.

If you have to rate the performance of the Bok coaching staff you must give them a -10.

It is all about poor selections, poor substitutions and no game plan detectable. What is worse, the players’ skills levels are shocking and in general they look like a side that is not being coached at all. It is almost like watching a social team in the Sunday league, a bunch of hungover old men rocking up without having trained. In fact, I’ve seen primary school teams with better skills levels.

rugby365’s Jan de Koning rates the Springbok players:

15 Conrad Jantjes:
If he is the answer to an ageing Percy Montgomery, then South Africa are in trouble. His options are poor, his hands shocking and his positional play ordinary. 4/10

14 JP Pietersen:
He ran around like a headless chicken all afternoon, mostly sideways and was replaced in the 45th minute. 3/10

13 Adrian Jacobs:
First the positives. He tried hard and did great work for two fine tries. But overall he was nothing special. That said, he was South Africa’s best back. 6/10

12 Jean de Villiers:
He is still dangerous with ball in hand and can punch holes in almost any defensive line. But why, oh why, does he hold onto the ball so long? 5/10

11 Jongi Nokwe:
His inexperience was shown up by the astute Wallaby backs. That he has talent, there is now doubt. But a very naive player and tends to run across the field too much. 4/10

10 Butch James:
Other than aggression he brings nothing to the game. Poor options, his goal-kicking is average and he gave away a crucial penalty – not to mention some very poor skills. 4/10

9 Fourie du Preez:
He is certainly not the same player as last year … perhaps rusty? Also missed a crucial tackle that allowed Tuqiri in for a try. 4/10

8 Pierre Spies:
He tries hard and brings something special to the team, but it is obvious the loose trio not the right blend. 5/10

7 Juan Smith:
As always he shows lots of endeavour, for no real reward. Another struggling performance. 4/10

6 Schalk Burger:
Energetic and a workhorse as always, but as I said before, the loose forwards are not playing as a unit. 5/10

5 Victor Matfield (captain):
He is not the force he was in the line-outs last year and his skills levels are shocking. He works hard, but not near his best and it seems the captaincy is affecting his game. 3/10

4 Andries Bekker:
Poor discipline and a very poor work rate – often just standing around at rucks when the Wallabies drive the Boks off the ball. Was a passenger on Saturday. 2/10

3 CJ van der Linde:
Shocking discipline and very lucky not to be carded for a head-butt early in the game. He should be cited and will deserve it if he is banned. There was also a shoulder charge off the ball and a late tackle. -5/10 (Note: it is MINUS 5)

2 Bismarck du Plessis:
Another player who relies more on brawn than brains. 4/10

1 Tendai Mtawarira:
Good scrumming and some big hits and was the Boks’ best forward. But why was he replaced? 6/10

Replacements (20 minutes or more to be rated):

16 Adriaan Strauss (on for Du Plessis in 78th minute):
Not enough time to be rated

17 Brian Mujati (on for Mtawarira – 56th minute):
The Springboks lost a lot when the Beast (Mtawarira) went off. 2/10

18 Joe van Niekerk (on for Pierre Spies 56th minute):
Lost his first line-out ball, then had a good run, but turned the ball over. No real contribution. 3/10

19 Luke Watson (on for Juan Smith – 60th minute):
Hats off to Jake White for getting his assessment of Luke Watson spot on – he is not an international player, by any measure. Missed two crucial tackles on Mortlock before the Wallaby captain’s try and then got in the way again when Francois Steyn tried to collect a kick downfield. He is another of Peter de Villiers’ passengers. -5/10 (Note: it is MINUS 5)

20 Ricky Januarie (on for Fourie du Preez – 63rd minute):
Did nothing wrong, but not long enough to be rated.

21 Frans Steyn (on for James – 56th minute):
Had another of his now famous (or infamous if you like) brain explosions, while his poor discipline also cost the Boks. Made a great break, only to pass to an Aussie player. 0/10

22 Percy Montgomery (on for Pietersen – 45th minute).
Showed his experience by being a creative force that set up Jacobs’ second try. But he is getting on and should be employed in a ‘coaching’ role. We don’t want his reputation harmed by letting him carry on for too long. 5/10

  • I actually think Jan De koning may have read the comments on his ratings last week and decided to be a little more critical this week.

I feel these ratings are much more inline with performances with last weeks being a little to generous in certain areas. And it seems the sugar coating has fallen off the comment for most player. 😉

Particularly impressed that he went as far as awarding MINUS 5s to CJ and Watson.

I would have given one more (7) to Beast and Adi Jacobs each.

  • Thought his bissieness deserved more like a 6. Matfield also gets a 0 or less

  • “and then got in the way again when Francois Steyn tried to collect a kick downfield.” I’m sorry but that was Watson’s ball to take, not Steyns. Sheesh so critical of everything Luke does. doesn’t deserve a minus 5 for his performance, he just gets it on Jan’s biased opinion of him.

  • Take away the Ricky Januarie 10 seconds of brilliance in Dunedin and we’d be oh for five in this trinations.

  • I dont agree on Frans Steyn , otherwise spot on . If Steyn is left at flyhalf he will master the position , this is also Ian Mac’s opinion , he has played every position in the backline besides scrumhalf and if the guy makes any mistake he is ostrasized . And put Ruaan with him him at scrumhalf and soon you’ll have the best combination in international rugby , hope Plumtree will do this for rest of the CC .

  • @sharks 30 (Comment 9) : How sure are you about that? I want to believe, but Steyn’s speed of thought just seems way too slow for ten. I’d like him to settle at fullback. Welcome to the site, btw. Glad to have you here

  • @sharks 30 (Comment 9) :

I think Frans would be great in a side that’s well-structured and he is the only one, or one of only two or three, that gets free licence to do as he pleases.
Right now he is just another one that does as he pleases.

    Frans would’ve been top-class under a White/Woodward/Henry.

  • @robdylan (Comment 10) : Thank you Rob nice being here , obviously we will never know until we try therefore i really hope Plumtree will experiment with this , however as you know Frans and his agent had meetings with Plumtree and it was agreed that he would play inside centre or fullback as he was unhappy at having to play all over the show , this was also going to be discussed with Div , i base my belief on Ian Mac’s opinion i have great respect for his knowledge and gut feeling he has seldom been wrong IMO 🙂

  • @sharks 30 (Comment 12) :

Then he should find his feet playing flyhalf in the Currie Cup, definitely not against the All Balcks or Shackledraggers.

    Just my humble opinion.

  • @sharks 30 (Comment 12) : Didn’t know about that meeting. Did it happen recently? Still waiting with trepidation to see who the Sharks intend on using at ten in the super 14

  • @robdylan (Comment 14) Approx 3 weeks ago at the same time offers started coming from french clubs , when he was dropped from the national squad and played CC for the Sharks against WP , It was said that the offer made to him by one of the french clubs was the biggest ever in European rugby history , not sure exactly which club , the Sharks then met with him to discuss his future as he is still contracted to them until 2009 , i doubt if Sharks will use him at 10 with Barrit leaving they will most probably stick with Michalak which would be sad because he is only an short term solution and has not exactly played the world on fire .

  • Comment 15, posted at 25.08.08 05:09:38 by sharks 30 Reply

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 13) : You have an valid opinion problem is we dont have an flyhalf to replace Butch , Butch has played for over one year solid S14 , Cc , Hc and after this coming weekend returns to play for Bath he must be exhausted and thats why IMO he has not been up to scratch .
Grant is injured , we cannot win the Tri Nations what have we got to lose ? He looked good when he came on under very trying circumstances but he needs the opportunity to play 😉

So our S14 backline will be

    Kockott / Pienaar
    Grant 😉
    Pienaar / Jordaan?

I can live with that, can probably CHEER about that. 🙂

    GO SHARKS!!!!!!!

  • Hi All

    Crap Captian, Crap performance…

What does PdV want?? Running Rugby with no wins and furious fans or focus on winning even if not so spectacular and in any case will have happy fans?? Jiss – difficult choice… 🙄

I dont know if its just my imagination – but all does not seem well in the Bok camp… 😐 It’s just a vibe that I get from listening to some interviews…and i am a woman and my sixth sense is normally rather spot-on..

Loveley compliment Adi received from Campo, hey?? Well done Adi – although one man cannot win us a game..

  • Comment 35, posted at 25.08.08 16:54:11 by Hmmm Reply

  • Bismark did not play too badly…he stole 3 / 4 balls in tackle situations and had a few good runs…gained good ground with his runs…if not for the mess in the lineout (not saying just him…all are to blame)…he would have gotten and even higher score…would settle for 5/10 for now…

  • I would give Frans a 2/10…he put in a few good kicks and we were playing more in the Aussies side of life…had a few good runs and put in a few good passes…but did not set anyone alight…
