Valke ring the changes

Young Tukkie centre Franco Booysen’s fairytale season continued when he was included in the Falcons Currie Cup team to face the Sharks in Kempton Park on Saturday.

Rugby 365 reports that Booysen’s meteoric rise started when he joined Tukkies after being shunned by PUK’s Under-21 selectors.

He immediately made an impact by winning Man of the Match accolades and was selected for both the Blue Bulls Amateur and Sevens sides.

To play Currie Cup rugby for the province where he played Craven Week is a cherry on top of a fantastic season.

New Falcons flyhalf John Roodt would also probably pinch himself after being named in the side a day after he learned that he had to attend practice.

Roodt represented PUK for the best part of the season and played on the side of the scrum for most of his high school years.

Sharks loose forward Thabo Mamojele and Tukkies flank Gert Lubbe will also make their Currie Cup debuts for the Falcons, playing alongside flank Uwe Sauer, who returns after injury.

Lubbe’s club mate and fellow flank Daan-Roux van Coller is another rag to riches story and he will also take the big step into the provincial arena.

Falcons coach Rudy Joubert has also called on veteran Nico Luus and strongman Zane Killian to prop his scrum against the Sharks.

Luus is a veteran in the provincial stage and his experience would be crucial to the struggling Falcons.

Reserve scrumhalf Freddie van Zyl will also make an appearance off the bench while Gerrie Odendaal gets a start against the Sharks.

Falcons: 15 Johan Jackson, 14 Dewald Pretorius, 13 Rouan Cloete, 12 Hanno Coetzee (captain), 11 Frank Wagenström, 10 John Roodt, 9 Gerrie Odendaal, 8 Thabo Mamojele, 7 Gert Lubbe, 6 Uwe Sauer, 5 Nico Luus, 4 Wouter Moore, 3 Nico Pretorius/Dirk Smit, 2 Jody Jeneker, 1 Zane Killian.
Replacements: 16 Ryno Barnes, 17 Gavin Whittingham, 18 Marius Coetzer, 19 Daan-Roux van Coller, 20 Freddie van Zyl, 21 Franco Booysen, 22 TBC.

  • actually a bit miffed about this… I’ve been backing Thabo for some time. He’s a big lad, but just hasn’t quite come through.

I’ve heard that he’s a bit “top heavy”, though… no real meat on the legs

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : Rob, look at this link and at their way of having a player profile each week. I still maintain Sharksworld can do the same towards the good of rugby.

I know you know the site, so maybe you have seen it and do not agree with me. It is okay you know. There are after all two sides to every thing. The wrong side and then my side.

I’ve never heard of the guy, but will certainly be having a look this week to see if he is any good.

  • 😆 The Valke look like the Sharks development squad. I count 5 that have worn the Sharks jersey.

  • We ain’t won there since 96 and that ain’t gonna change this year

It amaizes me that the Sharks battle at Ellis Park in CC. 😕

Our S14 side has won often and that is similar to the strength we have now with our Boks back. No worries.

  • @Ernie (Comment 8) : and Reg Muller isn’t in the squad this week. He would be number 6.
