Big day, guys… our very own superhero, Ryan “the Hoff” Kankowski, Sharks eighthman extraordinaire, Bok phenom and general all-round cool guy, celebrates his 23rd birthday today.
Kanko has been on fire recently, the tall St Andrews boy coming back beautifully after being out of action with a clavicle injury. His solo long-range try against the Lions in last week’s semi really set the tone for a resounding victory. He was destroyer-in-chief against Griquas the week before, brushing aside feeble tackle attempts and striding like a colossus over hordes of peacock-blue jerseys every time he got the ball.
His exploits against the selfsame Lions in the penultimate round-robin game were the stuff of legends too and he was deservedly named man of the match in that encounter, having provided two pieces of individual magic to break the deadlock in the second half. On current form, Kanko is an absolute shoe-in to wear the Springbok number 8 jersey and will hopefully emulate Gary Teichmann in occupying it for many seasons to come.
