Lion sign two SA Under 20s

The Lions have apparently signed two members of the SA Under 20 side which toured France earlier this year. Bulls centre Divan Kotze and Sharks flank Thilipatu Marole will seemingly play their rugby at Coca-Cola Park next season.

Kotze is a born-and-bred Blue Bull, having attended Waterkloof Hoër in Pretoria. He has represented the Bulls at virtually every age-group level and played for them at Vodacom Cup and Under 21 level in 2008. Most comfortable at centre, the 20 -year-old is also quite capable at flyhalf and will add much-needed depth to the Lions ranks.

Marole joined the Sharks from the Leopards age-group ranks, yet despite representing South Africa at both under 19 and under 21 level, has failed to make his mark on the domestic scene, turning out more regularly for the Jaguars team than for any of the Union’s representative sides. Also just 20, Serge (as he is known to his team mates) is of the short and stocky variety and he will presumably be earmarked as backup to the inimitable Baywatch Grobler in the Lions number 6 jersey.

Let’s hope Loffie Eloff has some other bigger names lined up to join the Lions in 2009, or else it’s going to be another long season for fans of the Jobrug team.

  • It does beg the question why did the Bulls and Sharks not sign them…

Here’s hoping they are worthwhile investing in.

Valid question, but I think both teams have enough depth in the relevant positions. Although the Bulls may need a better center than Delport and Julies.

I guess KSA its just that the Lions are always going after average players in the hope they can improve them..which is not what the union should be doing cause we’ll always be playing catch-up with the others unless we commit to getting good enough players that can compete for some silverware.just like Aston Villa making up the numbers..

  • @CoffeeShopBok;-) (Comment 3) : but what about the Sharks. We bought a few unknown players a few years ago (Pienaar, Bismark, Steyn, Botes, Pietersen…) and even last season in Deysel. i think its how you manage them. i agree in a way that you need above average players in key positions (Michalak, Tereblanche, Jannie du Plessis) signings, but i think thats where the sharks are so good. the buy influential players, players that help the youngsters. Take michalak and percy…

on that front, anyone seen the Argentinian Prop we signed at the end of August??
