Luke Watson has options from different clubs if he wants to continue his rugby career overseas after his involvement in the latest media storm.
In the latest row the South African Rugby Union appointed a designated official to investigate statements alleged to have been made by Springbok and Western Province loose forward Watson.
Durban attorney Dekker Govender has been tasked with investigating the allegations and weighing up the evidence to determine if they merit a breach of the South African Rugby Union code of conduct.
News 24 reports that in an interview with the Wimpy Big Breakfast team of the radio station, OFM, Watson’s agent Jason Smith confirmed that “we have some interest from overseas clubs for Luke for the last 12 months. If Luke decides that he wants to play in Europe, these opportunities will definitely be available.”
Watson’s father, Cheeky Watson, confirmed “there is already a big offer on the table.” But he said “Luke is born in South Africa. Why must he pack his bags?.”

This kid is so misguided by his fathers expectations and pig headedness that he believes its right to be unhappy to be a martyr.

@Salmonoid (Comment 4) : If I remember correctly, the Watson Family WERE treated very badly by certain other whites, because of Cheeky’s stand. I even think they had to move house etc. BUT, so were a lot of other liberal whites! One of my friends had both her parents under house arrest & could not invite friends over etc & as she grew older she was often trailed by the Sp Branch. A scary experience for some of her friends, I may add.
What annoys me about this whole thing is that Cheeky seems to have a huge chip on his shoulder & is using Luke to relieve the burden. Luke is right…he is a “political pawn” of his FATHERS making. So in a way I feel sorry for him.
By the way…I have never heard my friend ask for any favours of the “New Regime” even if she did “bleed” for them, nor have I heard her express any bitterness towards those who deprived her of a normal childhood, teenage life etc. You see her folks were well educated & well rounded people who feel that their reward was to see the birth of our democracy and the reconciliation processes that have followed.

I dont think they let him go early, I think they refused to pick him for any teams but ensured that he didn’t get an early release, ie they were properly pissed off with him and were letting him know all about it.

I’m trying to relive the feelings I had for the Watson brothers when I was a youngsters. I loved reading about their defiance of the then rugby structures and the hassles they had to endure just to play rugby for the club of their choice. News on them was very scant but the Sunday Times did ensure that I knew who Cheeky Watson was and I admired him for his stance. Sadly I dont think he has moved on and projects this on Luke. There was a time that I really did not like Luke but weirdly the more I read an article about him and in that article his father is also offering his opinions the more I soften to Luke – who I now see as someone taking on the persona of a victim of serious mental abuse from his father (administered unknowingly of course)
