The Golden Lions Rugby Union have finalised their contracts and player signings for the 2009 season which will include the Vodacom Super 14 and Absa Currie Cup competitions.
The GLRU Website reports that the Union is pleased to announce that they have extended the following players’ contracts for a further period of 2 to 3 years:

Yeah the women play Rugby all-over the gulf. The matches are all played on enclosed fields so the women play in regular kit.
There are actually Womens tournaments about once a month. Usually a 10’s tournament. the next one is in Doha (Qatar) next weekend where I am supposed to ref but i am a single parent that weekend as Kette is in jordan for a conference.

Question: What would the decision have been if the TV Ref said no interference by Bismarck on the Sykes attempted try. Sykes was stopped by a whistle without grounding on interference suspicion. Would a penalty try have been awarded as he definitely would have scored if he was not stopped by the whistle? Even though he did not ground the ball after the whistle was blown. Or what would the decision have been in this instance?

Thanks for the very interesting question. I think in hindsight, I blew the whistle a little early. I am a referee who is use to making decisions and Bismarck’s was no different. But now with the new dispensation of the TMO, I have to learn to allow the move to finish and then refer it up to the TMO asking him to check “the legality of the try”
As it happened in the match I blew early and had the TMO overruled me, I would not have been able to give the sharks a try as one wasn’t scored. I would only have been able to give a 5m scrum. Would have been tough on them but then that is the law!

Jody and Smith has been playing for the under 21 side this year, obviously both of them will be in the run for the senior side (or vodacom cup) next year
Jaco van Schalkwyk of the Lions is off to Rome to play, not for Nero in the Coliseum but for Futura Park Roma, promoted this year to Italy’s Super 10 and holding its own.
Van Schalkwyk, who turns 30 next September, was born in arid Vanwyksvlei and educated at Paarl Boys’ High.
He has played first class rugby since 2001, when he played for Western Province, before moving to the Cheetahs and then on to the Lions.
In 2003-04 he played for the SA Sevens team.
His first-choice position is fullback, but he can play wing, centre and flyhalf.
Playing in Italy is not his first trip to Italy, as he played for Calvisano in the 2005-06 season when he played in the Heineken Cup.
He said that he was happy to be in such a great city and to play for Rugby Rome. He knew the Italian rugby scene well and had no doubts about his choice of club this time
I didn’t even notice that he wasn’t on the list of players signed or being negotiated with.
And with Joubert out for 5 months……………..
Italian club rugby is not exactly a step up imo. But a euro is a euro I suppose.
