Ask Ruan Pienaar a question

Sharksworld have managed to secure an interview with Bok scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar, courtesy of his official website,

We’d like to extend an opportunity to our faithful readers to help us shape the interview, by submitting questions you think we should ask Ruan. Post your question to Ruan here and we will consider including them in the list of questions we put to the Sharks match winner.

Once we’ve assembled a good list of questions, we’ll do the interview and hope to have the answers within the next week or so, depending on Ruan’s schedule.

Just a few things to consider:
1) The 9/10 debate has been covered to death. I’m pretty sure Ruan is a little tired of answering yet another question about where he wants to play. It’s 9, geddit?
2) We won’t ask him anything that’s likely to get him into hot water with his employers either at SARU or the Sharks.
3) Obviously, anything even mildly offensive will not make the list, but we’re not that sort of site anyway!
4) There’s no guarantee that Ruan will get to answering the questions before the Currie Cup Final this weekend, so maybe be a little more general.

Fire away guys – let’s make this a truly great interview!

  • Make sure you delay them until after the Final and then ask him what it feels like to win his First of many CC trophies?

  • In a setup like the Sharks, a Big union with various talent in every position, and as it is at scrumhalf, how do you scrumhalfs get along? is it everyone for himself, or do you guys help each other with tips etc??

  • Ruan do you think that in light of the international financial crisis that there should be more regulation of the markets and if we do, how do we reconcile this with free market beliefs?

  • Ruan, taking the previous question from Dive Pass into account, are you of the opinion that rugby fans know very little about rugby and should give players a bit more leeway before passing judgement on them?

  • Maybe we could ask him who the funniest guy is at the sharks, the one with the worst english (dutchman), the one who`s always late… etc.

  • Ruan, my favourite rugby playeer in the country!

What do you consider to be the best try you ever scored. A couple pop into my mind, THAT try against the brumbies in 2005, against england in sa last year, but which one did you enjoy the most?

Oh, and do you know what the airspeed is of an un-laden swallow? (african swallow, not european)

  • How much of rugby these days is mental preparation and how much physical and skills? Do you put a lot of emphasis on mental preparation, if so how and do you do it with external help (expert)?

  • another one from me. Ruan, us supporters start supporting a team from a young age and we tend to stick to that team through thick and thin, even if we want to we can’t stop supporting them. how does this work with prof rugby players?

I am sure you supported a specific team when you were young, maybe not the team you play for now. but once you retire you may have played for a few provincial teams. who do you support then? for example, when percy retires will he support province or the sharks? i often wonder about this.

  • Hoessit Tjops.

    Firing away:
    1) Completely hypothetical – should you be able to move from the Sharks, is there somewhere specific you’d like to go? (Think along the lines of overseas vs local, Japan/Aus, setup/coach/player/captain you’d want to get involved with.)
    2) Froggie, ag sorry – ‘Freddy’ Michalak, what is your impression of his stint with the Sharks? I was surprised that he stayed on for CC, was he in a hurry to get back or did he want to stick around?
    3) You played in the game vs Namibia last year, anything you can share about the game and/or afterwards?
    4) I enjoy smaller unions like the Leopards, Falcons, Griffons & Cheetahs (..did I say that out loud?) but they’ve little continuity, money and lose players at too a rapid rate. From a player’s perspective, can it be fixed…do you have any suggestions?

Thanks, cheers and all the *best for Saturday!

*’best’ in this case being 0-all draw!!

  • Questions..questions..I’m such a dork that I actually have somewhere a document chock full of questions for interviews like this. Ruan would be my first SA player though, all my others have been for my French guys (sadly no Fred tho).

    1) Where is one place in the world that you want to visit and why?
    2) Do you have any tattoos (had to ask this one πŸ˜‰ )
    3) What is one place that you would recommend to anyone coming to SA for the first time as a ‘must see’ spot? (Next year..I swear I am going to be on the ground in SA for more than three days)

  • If you didn’t play rugby what would you do? Did you study or did you just always play rugby.
Who do you think is the top three 9’s in the world at this moment and of all time.
Right now you play like Ruan Pienaar, you clearly have a style of your own and I must add it is working for you, but when you were younger were there players or 9’s you looked up to and tried to base your play on how they play?
Who do you hang out with in your team? Or do you guys even ever hang out outside of practice and sharks events?
Do you have anything specific you do before a game to motivate you and keep you calm before a game?
What do you think about when you have to kick a penalty you look so deep in thought πŸ˜‰
Many players say they don’t here the crowds when they play a game, do you ever get distracted by a crowd, or more motivated when playing in front of a big crowd? For example, how is it different playing in front of a small crowd or a final crowd or playing home or away?

I have more, but I’ll just wait for a while and see what everyone else asks.

I don’t yeronner!! I insist that you ask him this question in this way: Ruan, we know by now that 9 is your preferred position AND that if you are not the no1 choice in SA already, you soon will be. However, how do you feel about your fans who see you as our rugby saviour in the weak 10 position?
