The Springbok Sevens squad will start their preparations for the upcoming international season by taking part in the Middelburg 90th Anniversary Tournament on Saturday, coach Paul Treu has confirmed.

SA Rugby reports that Treu, who today named a provisional squad of 14 players for the tournament, said he will reduce the squad to 10 players before travelling to Middelburg on Friday.

The coach also confirmed he will take the same squad to Singapore for their second warm-up tournament, the 61st Singapore Cricket Club International Sevens event on 1 – 2 November. The SA Vipers are the defending champions.

According to Treu a national squad of 24 players will be named early in November to attend the Springbok Sevens training camp at the University of Stellenbosch.

The provisional SA Sevens squad to Middelburg and Singapore:

Mpho Mbiyozo, Marius Schoeman, Schalk van der Merwe, Frankie Horne, Paul Delport, Renfred Dazel, Shaun Davids, Mzwandile Stick, Howard Noble, Ryno Benjamin, Thabo Mamojele, Ridwaan de Bruin, Sampie Mastriet, Cornell Hendricks.

About the Singapore Cricket Club International Sevens Tournament:
Teams are invited from around the world to play for the Ablitt Cup. The silver Ablitt Cup was donated in 1947 for the winners of the first seven-a-side tournament organised by the SCC Rugby Section. Since then the tournament has grown into an annual competition and is now firmly established one of the world’s oldest events of its kind.
