And now Joubert is gone too

The Valke have well and truly pushed the panic button.

It’s hard to believe that the same team that beat Western Province just a few short months ago will be languishing in the B-Division (or whatever PC name it has now). Coach Rudy Joubert is the latest casualty of the purge (or is it a desertion) affecting rugby on the East Rand.

Local club coaches Kobus van Rooyen and Derick Sampson will take the reigns at Bosman Stadium next season and the union seems to be moving firmly back towards amateur status. In 2008, the Valke loaned players liberally from other teams. That will no longer be the case and they’ll draw the bulk of their 09 squad from the local club ranks.

There’s no news on what will become of Joubert, or even a suggestion of whether he’s walking away of his own free will, or being pushed. One thing is for sure; as good a coach as Joubert is, not even he will be able to turn the ragtag bunch of East Rand no-hopers that will turn out in the scarlet jersey next year into a team capable of challenging for promotion once more.

Good luck to you, Rudy Joubert, wherever you end up. You deserve better than this.

  • I’m sure the RFU gives the relegated club (from the Premiership) a parachute payment to help them cope. Probably to avoid a scenario like this happening.

  • Wonderful news for the Sharks.
Now he can be employed by us and all the bloggers that were tearing into our current coaches (the same ones that won the Currie Cup) after the Sharks Valke game in Durban will be very happy because they were wishing that Rudi Joubert could come and coach the Sharks.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 6) : you can be quite bitchy at times – you know that? 🙂

Look – you can’t argue that the Valke played the better rugby for large parts of that game…

😀 but not nearly as bitchy and hurtful as those that were casting stones at our Currie Cup champs.

Valke played some damn good rugby but one cant demand the coaching staffs / players heads every time the opposition team plays good rugby. Imagine what the scenario would be like if the opposition played the better rugby and also won the game.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 10) : ok, ok… I have eaten my fair share of humble pie of late. Not sure I can stomach yet another embarrassing retraction article. Don’t make me do it, please?
