Lucky Luke gets off scot-free

An SA Rugby Union disciplinary hearing against Luke Watson has found in the player’s favour.

Details are sketchy at this stage, but it appears that Watson has won this round. The hearing came to and end after only 90 minutes, apparently on the basis that the adjudicator appointed by SARU didn’t have the necessary authority to hear the case. I mean, what the hell?

In typically unrepentant, boorish fashion, the pint-sized pugilist saw fit to spout further vitriol after the hearing, branding those who accused him “incompetent”.

I guess this just shows the sheer futility of SARU actually trying to take any sort of meaningful action against anyone. They are in such a perpetual shambles that they must represent dream opposition to any legal team worth its salt. Certainly Watson’s crack squad of legal eagles didn’t take very long at all to wrap this one up.

A most unsatisfactory end to an unsavoury saga. Do us a favour, little Luke… dry up and blow away now. We are tired of you.

  • Original story from

    Watson off the hook
Controversial rugby player Luke Watson is off the hook after a South African Rugby Union disciplinary hearing ruled in his favour on Tuesday.

The ruling was a result of an inquiry into alleged statements made by Watson concerning SA rugby and the Springboks.

He was charged with contravening rugby’s code of conduct but he said that the hearing found that the constitution regulations of SARU gave no basis for the charges against him.

He said that he was delighted with the result but sorry that SARU saw fit to obtain unauthorised and incomplete cell phone recordings without identifying the informant.

Watson also attacked the actions against him saying he deplored the incompetence surrounding the pressing of charges which he said were null and void from the outset.

  • An interesting onlooker/supporter at the hearing was Dr Asad Bhorat of the Soweto rugby club, the same good doctor that claimed the Springbok emblem was akin to the German national team wearing a swastika.

Anyway, it’s a moot point. Duane Vermeulen is an infinitely superior 8thman, while Schalk Burger is a far better open side flank. There is no room for Luke in the starting 15 and if WP REALLY want to keep him on the bench, I hope Koster gets fed up and moves to Natal

If England’s initial warm-up win over Mumbai on Sunday provided some cheer after the side’s poor showing in the Stanford Series, it has been quickly dispelled by their dismal defeat today. Their 50-over match against the Mumbai Cricket Association XI was a rout of the worst kind; the makeshift Mumbai side bowled England out for just 98, having scored 222-7 in their own innings. England lost the match by 124 runs. The man who did the damage to England, Kshemal Waingankar, had played just one first-class match in his entire career, in which he had taken only one wicket. Against England today he finished with five for 37 from his eight overs.

With just three days to go before their first one-day international against India, England will have to hope that this match is nothing more than an anomaly, the worry will be that it is far more than that. England lost five wickets in the first 12 overs of their innings, making them 35-5. Ian Bell fell for six in curiously inept fashion, edging a half-hearted cut shot through to the wicketkeeper. Matt Prior was out lbw soon after, as was Kevin Pietersen, who was out for a duck after he misjudged an attempt to come down the pitch and hit Waingankar through mid-wicket.

His dismissal meant England had lost three wickets in three successive overs. Samit Patel and Paul Collingwood attempted to bolster the total with some cagier batting, but after five overs Collingwood drove to mid-on and Patel was caught at slip off Waingankar. England’s trio of all-rounders, Luke Wright, Ravi Bopara and Andrew Flintoff, were all dismissed in single figures. When Steve Harmison was out for four, England were 64-9 and only Patel, with 13, had made it into double digits. From there James Anderson and Graeme Swann added a negligble gloss to the total with a stand of 34. Anderson was out for 20, leaving Swann unbeaten as top-scorer with 24.

In the field England found the going tough. With Ryan Sidebottom still unavailable for selection because of his calf problem and Stuart Broad suffering a sore knee, the England pace attack had a threadbare feel. James Anderson took the wicket of Praful Waghela in the third over, but after that Paul Valthaty and Sushant Marathe shared an 81-run partnership over 24 overs. Valthaty was caught in the deep off Graeme Swann, and Samit Patel and Steve Harmison then picked up a brace of wickets each. That was not before Shoaib Shaikh hit 37 from 35 balls to push MCA up to 222. It looked a tough target, it turned out that for England it was near-impossible.

It was also announced this morning that Michael Vaughan will fly out to India to join the England Performance squad. Vaughan will join the team on November 21, in time for a three-day match in Bangalore on the 30.

Apparently SARU dont see the outcome of this debacle in the same light as Luke does. They feel that the hearing is to still take place as this mornings attempt was not correctly constituted.
Luke feels otherwise and thus his own press release.

    “11 November 2008 (Posted: 15:16)

Judicial Officer Nape Dolamo ruled on Tuesday at the outset of the hearing against Luke Watson on charges of breaching certain sections of the South Rugby Union code of conduct, that his appointment as Judicial Officer was not authorised by the relevant regulations in terms of which he had been appointed.
Mr Dolamo emphasised that this ruling did not, of course, mean an end of the matter but that in the light of his ruling the hearing could not proceed.

As a result, the merits of the complaint against Mr Watson were not dealt with or considered.

The South African Rugby Union is considering its position in light of the ruling.”

  • Dear SARU,

It was with regret i read that you recently suffered another embarrassing defeat at your own hands.I suppose in the spirit of being factual, i should read your constitution, but the reality is the number of times it has defeated you and brought yourselves, SA rugby and well anything associated with you into disrepute is to numerous to mention, that and the most incompetent legal advice. I am fairly certain a freshly graduated ambulance chaser could do a better job.

Anyway i just wanted to say well done for trying, you made it remarkably clear that just like me you too think Luke Watson needs to be reminded that despite his made for movie upbringing, that i am sure will be a hit with rugby fans the world over, no-one thinks he’s a particularly decent fellow and i would like to suggest a new strategy towards the matter.

    Fire yourselves.

    Jaded regards

PS. Could you update your website the Bok seems to be in the right place, but i can’t seem to spot the Protea cynaroides anywhere.

    Dear Luke,

It seems this year we have grown so close and yet so so very very far apart. Very far. I usually reserve this kind of disregard for a person to ones i have actually met.

In a way i disappoint myself for disliking you so much as it goes against a principle of mine that you make a judgment for yourself about a persons character.

I am sure i will get over it.

So i impart a few pieces of wisdom i hope you take to heart

1 Regrets a bitch when you get older
2 The professional game is about the fans
3 While i am all for subverting the work place i am not sure a contact sport is an area to practice this

Anyway i ask that you now just shut the fuck up

With no respect whats so ever

    Luke available for Boks again
    2008-11-12 06:50

    Stephen Nell

Cape Town- Luke Watson says he’s available to play for South Africa again, but only under an emblem that represents “the entire country”.

After the South African Rugby Union’s (Saru) disciplinary hearing against Watson in Newlands came to nought on Tuesday, Watson told Die Burger he would still like to play for his country.

“I would love to play for South Africa again. There can be no bigger honour. This country symbolises hope and it’s a privilege to represent this nation,” said Watson.

“In terms of my principles I won’t be able to play under the Springbok as national emblem. If there is a national emblem that represents everybody, I will play for South Africa with pride, honour and dignity.”

Watson had to appear at a disciplinary hearing after allegedly saying last month that he had to keep himself from vomiting on the Springbok jersey.

However, the hearing was soon over after it was found that the judicial officer, Nape Dolamo, could not hear the case in terms of Saru’s regulations.

It is apparently because a clause that relates to the appointment of a judicial officer only refers to incidents involving matches.

As a result Watson did not even have to defend himself for his alleged vomit-comment.

He took a swipe afterwards at the “incompetence” that accompanied the bringing of charges against him.

“I am delighted with the outcome. It’s a pity Saru saw their way open to obtaining an unauthorised and incomplete recording on a cellular phone from a third party and wanted to use it against me.

“I deplore the incompetence that has surrounded the pressing of charges against me. They were null and void from the outset.

“I am grateful to my family, friends and many South Africans that supported me.”

Saru said yesterday in a statement that it did not yet consider the case closed.

Watson was supported earlier in the day by among others the secretary of the Transformation and Anti-racism Rugby Committee, Dr Asad Bhorat.

Bhorat is an outspoken critic of Saru’s approach to transformation. He travelled from Johannesburg to support Watson.

Bhorat described the case as a “witch hunt” on Watson and said “other political agendas” were at play.

Cedrick Frolick, speaking on behalf of the ANC Study Group on the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Sport, called on SA Rugby to apologise to Watson.

“Everybody that found Luke guilty even before the hearing took place, should apologise,” said Frolick.

“Luke is only 25, but has enormous credibility in non-racial rugby circles. However, a young person can only take so much. There was an orchestrated campaign against him.

“Luke is available for the national team again because the process restored his dignity.”

He might not start most games seeing as Vermeulen has been signed but i think he will play.

He did have a very good S14.

Luke is the type of person (notice I didn’t say player) that will throw toys if he doesn’t get enough game time. Remember the sulk, when he got subbed??????

Luke will not last the season, either though injury or some other unexplained reason.

Myburgh is a greenhorn (WP U21 captain at one stage) and so too is Koster.

If Rassie selects Koster or any of the other youngers ahead of Luke, well then he should move to the Sharks.

I’m sure the Sharks fans will accept him with open arms.

  • Luke aint going no place 😥 ❗

Luke Watson says he will not be prepared to play in a Springbok jersey again, if it remains the national emblem representing the South African rugby team.

However, he will also not look towards greener and more lucrative pastures overseas to continue his career.

“I am incredibly passionate about South Africa, as a nation, as a people. I believe we have the potential to rise above all the adversity, as we have done in the past.

    ‘I walked out victorious today’
“Fortunately, or unfortunately, I am completely sold on this nation. I never envisage going overseas.”
