South African Sevens captain, Neil Powell, has undergone an operation on his injured forearm and the powerful scrumhalf will be out of action for up to ten weeks, SA Rugby has confirmed.

SuperRugby reports that the Springbok Sevens skipper suffered a recurrence of the radius fracture to his right forearm during a training match last week, the same arm he injured two months ago in the Absa Currie Cup competition.

The injury has ruled him out of the first two tournaments of the IRB World Sevens Series, in Dubai (28- 29 November) and George (5 – 6 December), and the team is hopeful he will return to full fitness in time for the New Zealand tournament in February next year.

Unfortunately for the team, two more players – Shaun Venter and Chase Minnaar – suffered injuries during the same training exercise and both will be further examined to determine their readiness for possible inclusion.

  • I posted this article and forgot about it. 😆

I wanted to comment, that they played the Arabian gulf in a training match last week. and the Arabian gulf are also in their pool in the Dubai 7’s next week.

Obviously the Arabian gulf side decided to get the Boks sorted early on. 😉

  • @PJLD (Comment 4) :

I just know that the games were happening, and that the guys would all be travelling to Dubai together for the start of the IRB series.

I still get wound up about the lack of 7s coverage at times. 👿
