Nineteen players have agreed one-year Springbok contracts with SA Rugby, it was announced on Saturday.
SAPA reports that an offer was made to a 20th – CJ van der Linde – but the deadline expired on Saturday without CJ indicting whether he would return to South Africa from Ireland.
The contracted group includes seven players from the Sharks, six from the Blue Bulls, four from the Stormers and one each from the Lions and Cheetahs.
The players are contracted to a remuneration structure that will run until 2011, although players will only be contracted on an annual basis. Non-contracted players will be incentivised to force their way into the squad.
“The players’ input into this process was extremely positive,” said Andy Marinos, SA Rugby manager of national teams and acting managing director.
“We met SARPA (South African Rugby Players’ Association) in 2007 to decide on a remuneration model for the players until the next Rugby World Cup. The principle was to establish a new way for contracting as well as avoid the ‘last minute discussions’ we’d previously had with SARPA on the eve of end-season tours.
“SA Rugby held talks with representatives of SARPA, including senior Springbok players and also two managing directors of the Super 14 franchises. Our negotiations were centred on a performance-based model that was also incentivised for the non-contracted players. The old model was beneficial to those select few that had contracts, while the non-contracted players received only a daily allowance and their match fees.
“We also wanted to recognise the difference between Tier I and Tier II Test nations – in the past the same match fees were paid for both.”
The model for 2008 to 2011 was agreed as:
Contracted Players: SA Rugby will contract a minimum of 10 players and a maximum of 24 – depending on financial and playing resources.
Squad Fees: All players selected for a Vodacom Inbound, Vodacom Tri-Nations and End-of-year Tour will receive an assembly fee.
Match Fees: All players will be paid match fees and win bonuses depending on whether an opponent is from a Tier I (top six) or Tier II nation. The ranking of opponents will be based on the IRB rankings as at June of each year.
Contracted Springbok players for 2009
Sharks: JP Pietersen, Adrian Jacobs, Ruan Pienaar, John Smit, Bismarck du Plessis, Frans Steyn, Tendai Mtawarira.
Golden Lions: Jaque Fourie
Free State Cheetahs: Juan Smith
Blue Bulls: Fourie Du Preez, Victor Matfield, Pierre Spies, Bryan Habana, Danie Rossouw, Bakkies Botha
Stormers: Conrad Jantjes, Enrico Januarie, Jean de Villiers, Schalk Burger

Nobody in there who i would say doesn’t deserve a contract.
I acan’t really think of anyone who hasn’t got one who shoulda got one either.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 1) : Kanko
@robdylan (Comment 2) :
True. Although he can’t feel THAT hard done by, he hasn’t been left out with some no name player getting in, in his place.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 3) : true. He’s better than Spies, though 🙂
The Kiwis are giving the Aussies a nice stiff shafting. Just bowled them out for 181
I have to say, Australia are looking really kak.
@robdylan (Comment 4) :
VERY TRUE THAT.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 6) : ryan will be first choice eighthman for the Lions tour
@klempie (Comment 5) : Not to take anything away from the proteas but the aussies are kak…
AND- Kanko shouldve been the 20th player then…
@blckshrk – Go Serena! (Comment 8) : yeah, Ryan really needs to be given a few more Bok starts, though. Don’t think he’s started 3 tests even. A bit rich to expect a contract
I hope Kanko will be consistent in the coming S14. Hopefully he will get more game time during the Lions tour…
@blckshrk – Go Serena! (Comment 10) : he was apparently on fire on Friday. I reckon we should expect big things
The Aussies lost the first ODI to New Zealand. Bwahahahahaha
@wpw (Comment 12) : nice
@blckshrk – Go Serena! (Comment 10) : That’s what I said. 🙄
@wpw (Comment 12) : What I don’t get is how you can stretch a target of 182 out to the last ball of the innings. 🙄
@wpw (Comment 12) :
fooook only JUST!!!!.
I woulda been really PISSED had they won.
@robdylan (Comment 11) :
Don’t get me wrong. KANKO ROCKS. But let’s not do a WP media here? The opposition was our Sharks XV side, just as the Stormers played Boland.
Don’t get overly excited by a guy doing well against lower level opposition.
Bekker didn’t get a contract 😯
@molly (Comment 18) : maybe the contract specified a minimum number of rucks per game that he had to commit to, so he wasn’t prepared to sign it.
Then again, Matfield signed his, so it couldn’t have been that.
@robdylan (Comment 19) :
Probably took any eternity bending over to sign the contract…by the time he got down to put the pen on paper…the deadline had passed…much like how he plays really…
@blackshark (Comment 20) : did you have an extra helping of pro-nutro this morning? 🙂
@wpw (Comment 12) :
Apparently one of the Aussie newspapers had a photo of the Black Caps team leaving their dressing room and walking onto the field under a banner along the lines of “Even these losers believe they can beart Australia” 😈
@Salmonoid (Comment 22) : Baayadaful.
@Salmonoid (Comment 22) : I wonder what they are going to do now that they have discovered they can’t even when by cheating? 😕
@klempie (Comment 24) : win 😳
Where’s L 😯 😯 K ❓
@klempie (Comment 24) :
I reckon there’s many an Aussie gnawing at their wrists these days. The pressure on the team, and Ponting in particular, must be immense.
@Charlie (Comment 26) : getting his BMW fixed
@Salmonoid (Comment 27) : Did you see Broom getting gloved out? 😯
@Salmonoid (Comment 27) : Sammy have you got a reference where I can see that banner pic?
@klempie (Comment 29) :
No, what happened?
and
@klempie (Comment 30) :
No again. I heard it on RSG (Radio Sonder Grense) sports programme this morning, it was recounted by one of the journalist that was covering the Proteas tour.
Sorry for the late reply, the bank was giving me hell, or was that the other way round.
@klempie (Comment 30) :
If you find it post it here.
@Salmonoid (Comment 31) : Have a look here for a prime example of Aussie cheating.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBv4gq72p4M
@klempie (Comment 33) :
Hell, thats blatant. 👿
But it does make winning off the last ball that much sweeter.
@Salmonoid (Comment 34) : Certainly does. 🙂
Klempie
Check out post #6 on Keo’s article re Frans Steyn stalling on Sharks Deal. I’m sure you will enjoy it, but then again I think you may have actually written it. 😆
@Salmonoid (Comment 36) :
Here is the post Sammy is referring to. However, as Shaggy might put it, “Wasn’t me”.
to be read in yer best nasal aussie whine:
some they call me cheater
some they call me bent
strewth! when bob mugabe does it
they make him president!
those saffas thought they had me
when i snicked the ball behind
but lucky me, oh lucky me
the ump was fekkin blind!
as for me mate haddin
with his hands in front of the ball
sure he knew he was in the wrong
but it was an aussie judgement call!
now the saffas think they can beat us
these fekkin kiwis too
but the number of ways to cheat in a game,
well they dont have a clue!
