Every year we hear the same old tired excuses why a team didn’t perform, and what will be done about it. So in the interests of fun and seeing how true this prediction is, I have tried to recall some of what I’ve heard over the years.
This is what you’re likely to hear this season, and I’d be willing to put down a R100 bet that at least 80% of these phrases will be pronounced before the Super 14 is up.
“We’re in a re-building phase”
“We don’t enjoy playing with the ELVs” (Guess who?)
“This is a young side.”
“We’ll watch the video on Monday and sort it out during the week.”
“If we control the process, the result will take care of itself.”
“I didn’t think we were that bad…”
“South African sides are at a distinct disadvantage.”
“The ball was wet and slippery.” (For both sides dufus!!!)
“That was awesome.” (Sharks Captain after each game)
And from the commentators, some gems:
Murray Mexted: “The ebb and flow of psychic energy”
SABC2: “He gives the Sharks great go-forward / front-foot ball”
And this one from Hugh Bladen: “And he’s . . . done that” which is usually when he was thinking one thing and something else was done….
And finally – the most captured person on SuperSport – no, not a player, but the Bulls team manager, Wynie Strydom.

Hugh Bladen: ‘And its over… its over… its OVER…and it just misses the upright!!!’

Wynand Olivier will complete at least ONE pass to the touch judge. 😛
Hugh Bladen calling a player “thingy”
how about a Brosnihan classic:
“Waylon Murray. Showed more toe than a Roman sandal”…
“Steven Sykes. So tall, he must have been born on a long weekend”
@PJLD (Comment 3) : or calling Palu Kefu… 🙄
wouldn’t a Blayden-Brosnihan commentary team be just the best ever?
