The Waratahs cross the Tasman to visit the Hurricanes.

This clash sees one of last year’s semi-finalists host one of last year’s finalists.

The Hurricanes have been hit by a late injury to Piri Weepu and he will be replaced by S14 debutant Daniel Kirkpatrick.

Scott Fava is making history with the Waratahs as he becomes the first player to have represented all four Australian franchises.

Will the Hurricanes be too strong for last year’s bridesmaid? Or will the Waratahs get their campaign on track right from the word go?

  • This HAS to be a cracker.

Surely two of last years semi-finalists must produce a good game.

The ref being super experienced should also add to the game quality.

  • I take back my early season predictions. This has to be the worst Hurricanes outfit in years. No ideas on attack, defence is poor and they just seem brainless, bereft of ideas, lacking in pace, lacking in fitness, lacking in skills and disinterested.

Waratahs have excellent defence, that will help them. The tries though are thanks to the poor Hurricanes, so no real credit to the visitors there.

  • @try time (Comment 48) : How poor was that passage of play, stayed from 10m from the 22 to 20m out, back and forth, players not taking the ball at pace, no-one looking to break, no-one seems to have the ability.

Even Nonu seems to be backing off the physical stuff.

Loss of Jerry Collins is a massive blow.

  • @robdylan (Comment 101) :

    Yip.

but I would add a SO FAR to that statement. I can see at least two or three games that will have big margins next week.

    Bold indicates BIG margins.

    20 Hurricanes vs Highlanders Wellington
    20 Waratahs vs Chiefs Sydney
20 Western Force vs Vodacom Cheetahs Perth
20 Vodacom Stormers vs Reds Cape Town
    21 Brumbies vs Crusaders Canberra
21 Vodacom Bulls vs Blues Pretoria
21 The Sharks vs Auto & General Lions Durban

I will reserve judgement on the last two matches until after tonight, but I think at least the Bulls game will have a big margin.

  • @robdylan (Comment 103) :

I think the Blues are not where they need to be for a good season, if the Ludeke’s “fresh and rested” plan works for his top players then the Bulls will run the Blues ragged. If Ludeke’s plan has not worked then it will be a very close match. I don’t think the Blues of 2009 have it in them to thump the Bulls. (not on yesterday’s performance anyway)

We will only know tonight though.
