Sharks make 5 changes for Force

John Plumtree has made a few rotational change in the pack, with Jannie du Plessis coming in at tight head prop and John Smit starting in the number 2 jersey this week. Deon Carstens will start at looshead prop, with Tendai Mtawarira and Bismarck du Plessis both confined to the woodwork this week.

Amongst the backs, Frans Steyn moves one spot closer to the action and will operate at flyhalf in Ruan Pienaar’s absence. Somehwat surprisingly, Adrian Jacobs will remain at outside centre this week with Super 14 newbie Riaan Swanepoel named in the number 12 shirt.

It would appear that last week’s front row are paying the price for a sub-par performance against the lowly Reds. Plumtree clearly hopes that this week’s combination will be ablt to get the upper-hand over the Force and lay a platform for victory.

There are a number of interesting changes among the reserves, though, with both flyhalf Monty Dumond and loose forward Justin Downey poised to make their Super Rugby debuts off the bench this week. Skholiwe Ndlovu drops out of this week’s match 22.

The Sharks
15. Stefan Terblanche 14. Odwa Ndungane 13. Adrian Jacobs 12. Riaan Swanepoel 11. JP Pietersen 10. Francois Steyn 9. Rory Kockott 8. Ryan Kankowski 7. Keegan Daniel 6. Jacques Botes 5. Johann Muller (Captain) 4. Steven Sykes 3. Jannie du Plessis 2. John Smit 1. Deon Carstens
Replacements: 16. Bismarck du Plessis 17. Tendai Mtawarira 18. Albert van den Berg 19. Justin Downey 20. Ross Cronje 21. Monty Dumond 22. Luzuko Vulindlu

    The glass looks half full…

Clever mix there by Plum to start with John at hooker and keep Bis for the ugly stuff in the 2nd half. Look at our starting Front Row.

Time for Justin and the rest of the newbies to ride or die…and off course…the men of the moment…Frans and Swannie.

    Go SHARKS!!!

  • Worried about that backline. The Farce have been pretty strong just there.

  • Much better idea fielding TWO hookers and not one… although more than likely see Smit shift in for Jannie in the latter stages which defeats the purpose…

Thankfully there is a bit of a switch in the Force backline… but their massive backs are going to be targeting the centre combo particularly Adi with no Steyn there to help out… big mistake playing Botes and Daniels again… expect to see Botes’ attacking game stifled again having to make the most tackles out of the forwards…

Methinks Keegan dropping back into (behind) the centres on defence is the way to go… with the tight five upping their workload…

Still missing a quality lock in there with Muller…

    Go Steyn!!!

  • @wpw (Comment 10) : i hope u are wrong. in principle it is suppose to be a team effort. sharks have good team – they should not be dependant on one or two individuals.

  • @rekinek (Comment 13) :

Well what I meant was that if Steyn controls things like we know he can and has a great impact on the game, then I reckon the match will be half won.

He needs to step up to the plate!!!

  • @wpw (Comment 14) : of course he needs to step up.

i’m just against putting the pressure for the team’s result on one guy’s shoulders. he is playing out of position after all.

  • When last did Frans Steyn have a whole week to practice at fly half, its not ideal but its 7 days more time than he had before last weeks effort. Methinks / trusts / hopes he will be fine.

No not at all… just yet to be convinced that Sykes is any better than a CC lock… particularly looking at the calibre of young Aus locks coming through the ranks…

Perhaps it’s more a case of the current loose-trio being so unbalanced…

  • Against the Blues the Sharks elected play into the sun for 40-min so the Blues would only have 10-min with the sun in their eyes.
Against the Reds they declined to kick from right in-front of the posts only to attempt more difficult kicks later in the game.
    Who made these decisions?
Morne had it spot on a few weeks ago when he said the Sharks made a mistake with Muller as captain.

  • @rekinek (Comment 13) :

It’s a team sport alright…and always will be…but Steyn has been given the pivotal role and we all hope he’ll be able to outclass his opposite number Giteau. We’re placing a lot of pressure on the young man…but he’s filled big shoes before and did it well. He’s got the experience…he just needs to believe in himself and the rest of the team.

    Go SHARKS!!!

  • Well..its simple really…you stand waiting patiently behind a wall around a corner in preferably a darkish alley…when Gitau approaches, you very quietly move the bat in a ‘back-swing” position and wait….then you have to get the moment of impacy JUST right….and then you run like Carl Lewis!!! Simple…really.. πŸ˜‰
