Players from South Africa’s five rugby franchises dominate both the lists of points and try scorers in the Super 14 competition.

Wingers Henno Mentz (Lions) and JP Pietersen (Sharks) share the top spot as top try-scorers with three others who have all scored six tries.

When Bulls flyhalf Morne Steyn slotted the early conversion of Derick Kuun’s first try against the Chiefs at Loftus on Saturday, he became the first player to reach the century mark this season.
His 18 points on Saturday from a six from six full house as well as a drop goal saw him climb to 116 points and retain his position as leading points scorer.

Steyn, who struggled with his kicking in Australasia but now seems to be back on target, has scored one try and kicked 18 conversions, 21 penalties and four drop goals.

Hot on his heels is his opposite number on Saturday Stephen Donald on 98, with the Sharks’ Rory Kockott (97) a further point back.

Andre Pretorius (seventh), Jacques Louis Potgieter (eighth) and Peter Grant (ninth) see to it that South African players fill five of the top nine slots.

The Bulls Wynand Olivier and Pierre Spies, Jaque Fourie (Lions) and Jongi Nokwe (Cheetahs) have all scored five tries as did four overseas players, giving South African players six of the top 13 try-scoring spots.

It is interesting to note that Fourie and Mentz have scored 10 of the Lions’ 24 tries.
