The coach of the Vodacom Bulls Frans Ludeke has named Wynand Olivier at inside centre for Saturday’s Vodacom Super 14 final against the Chiefs at Loftus Versfeld but it remains to be seen whether the Springbok midfielder will recover in time.

The Bulls official website reports that Olivier run (sic) with the team on Tuesday morning and Ludeke is optimistic about his recovery but a final call will only be made later the week.

The Bulls’ first option is to play Olivier and Jaco Pretorius in the midfield but if Olivier does not recover Pretorius will again partner Marius Delport with the young talented Gerhard van den Heever on the bench.

Ludeke has otherwise left the team that ensured a home final unchanged and he said at the weekly press conference that was held at Loftus on Tuesday that the team is looking forward to the clash against the Chiefs.

“It is a great opportunity to play in a final at Loftus and we are excited about the challenge that awaits us.

“We have prepared well and the team is focused on the job at hand.”

The captain Victor Matfield added that you never know when the opportunity to play in a home final will emerge again and this is one of the reasons why the Bulls are going to put in a massive effort on Saturday.

“It is a new game and anything can happen, but we know that we need to play for the full 80 minutes against a team such as the Chiefs. What we have done in the round robin stage of the competition means nothing in a final, but we will definitely use that foundation on Saturday. We must have a great work ethic from the first to the last minute and grind out the right result.

“It is all about using and creating opportunities and absorbing the pressure that comes with a game like this.”

Vodacom Bulls: 15 Zane Kirchner; 14 Akona Ndungane, 13 Jaco Pretorius/Marius Delport , 12 Wynand Olivier/Jaco Pretorius, 11 Bryan Habana; 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Fourie du Preez; 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Dewald Potgieter, 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Victor Matfield (captain), 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Derick Kuün, 1 Gurthrö Steenkamp.

  • If Olivier is back it will be good but I think the Bulls will win regardless.

  • Good news for Bulls

Pretoria – Bulls centre Wynand Olivier, in the form of his life, is fit and will play for the Bulls in Saturday’s Super 14 final against the Chiefs at Loftus.

Olivier missed the Bulls’ semifinal victory over Crusaders last weekend because of a hip injury sustained in the early part of the match against the Sharks the previous week.

The Springbok World Cup centre was included in the side for Saturday.

He has worked with the Bulls medical team for the past 10 days. He was initially given until Friday when a decision on his fitness would have been taken.

The return of Olivier is a factor that the Chiefs will disregard at their peril.

Olivier will start at inside centre with Jaco Pretorius on his outside and Marius Delport on the bench.

The Bulls had a light attack session on the Loftus A-field on Wednesday and then went into a huddle for a short talk between the B- and C-fields.
