The Springbok squad for the Castle South Africa 2009 Lions Series was announced by South African Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins and national coach Peter de Villiers on Monday evening at Montecasino in Johannesburg. The Emerging Springbok side was also named.

The 28-man squad includes one newcomer in Blue Bulls flyhalf Morné Steyn. The selection also marks the return to the Springbok squad of Sharks prop Deon Carstens and Blue Bulls centre Wynand Olivier, both of whom last played for the Boks in 2007.

The other uncapped squad member is Lions flyhalf Earl Rose, who toured Europe with the Springbok team in 2008 but did not play.

Sharks flyhalf Ruan Pienaar and utility back Frans Steyn, who have been recovering from injury in recent weeks, are included in the group.

The squad includes ten players from the Bulls’ victorious Vodacom Super 14 squad. No less than 25 members of the squad that toured Wales, Scotland and England at the end of last year were included again.

The Springboks will face the British & Irish Lions in three Tests- in Durban on June 20, Pretoria on June 27 and Johannesburg on 4 July.

The national selectors have also confirmed the Emerging Springbok team that will face the British & Irish Lions at Newlands in Cape Town on Tuesday, June 23. No player who has appeared for the Springboks was considered for this team.

  • If you are not allowed to play for the Emerging Boks if you are a capped Springbok, then the inclusion of Rose in both squads would (to me anyway) mean that he will NOT be getting capped in the first test.

  • PdV playing his cards VERY close to his chest with regard to fullback.

Darren asks him about it and he says nothing further than mentioning that JPP, Fourie, Morne Steyn, Frans Steyn can all play fullback.

  • A person from the crowd asks the question why Kirchner was left out and PdV answers well IMO.

Along the lines of there are only two weeks to prepare and he has decided to stay with guys who are used to the culture in the team and have not let the side down in the past.

  • Great squad , here and there a odd selection but every coach has his on ideas of players to choose.
From the highlights reel Rose had a fantastic game against NambiaJust like Jake with his bolters Im gonna trust in PDV and watch how him and the coaching team get the Boks redy for blood.

    Can’t wait.

Kitchner will get his chance , remember there is a grueling Tri-nations up next.

J Fourie is a class player and will slot in nicely I think. Also he runs the best attacking lines in SA so should be well dangerous from the back.

  • Ja it might not be a good idea to choose a winger at fullback especially since Nokwe is not the best defender and his kicking also needs work. Maybe it will be best to play Habs nd JP as the wingers with either Frans or Fourie at fullback… I think Pdv will go for Fourie…

  • Well, Jake White rates Earl as having that something special so I’m not concerned about his selection. Im more concerned about the lack of a decent tight head.
Lets face it, John is a world class hooker and needs to start in his favoured position… Add Bismarck’s dismal form and it just doesnt make sense…

  • Earl Rose is actually a talented player. His major weakness is his defence and the fact that he is a bit lightweight and sometimes shirks the physical stuff. However, on attack he has some excellent touches and a very good boot…I’m sure PDV is doing what Jake White did with Nokwe, bringing him into the squad to gain some experience and to improve his confidence from being in the Bok environment

  • With no specialist fullback in the squad, I’m pretty sure PDV has earmarked Fourie for the number 15 jersey. That way, he doesn’t have to tamper with the Adi/JDV centre partnership.

Also if you remember Jaque Fourie made his name as a fullback with the Lions and only moved to centre a few seasons later, so it’s not that he hasn’t played there. JPP also started off as a fullback for the Sharks, so that is also an option.

It’s a risk as I’m not a fan of playing people out of position but if it comes off it could be spectacular. I just think it would have made sense to use the Bulls template (as it’s been working) and pick Kirchner. The key at international level is field position and that relies on tactical kicking.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 51) : Pretty close to starting 15..forwards choose themselves. It’s in the backline that there could be surprises. All depends on how Ruan and Frans Steyn recover from their injuries.

Chiliboy may not make the bench as he effectively will have 2 hookers in the starting 15..but you never know with PDV.

  • A few randon comments:

    – good grief that’s a strong emerging side – hope the team choices are a good fit and the Lions gonna struggle.

    – what does kirchner have to do to get a spot? Especially with no specialist selected in the Bok side. Kirchner was really one of the stand-outs for me in the S14. Suppose Piet just selecting on S14 form again.

    – tighthead still concerns me. No end. With all due respect to Mr. John Smit, he is a hooker and not a tighthead. There’s in anyway no back-up. Mujati already on the plane to nolongeraSouthAfricanfontein Peter? I thought he was still in SA myself…

    – where the hell did Pienaar get 27 caps Seriously have been in a coma? Even more seriously why do we still treat him like a rookie? The boy is halfway to a test half-century? Surely time to judge him a bit more harshly. When he’s fit of course…

    – Stefan. You poor man. How you must miss Jake and his preference for experience. You’re welcome to feel hard done by mate. Should’ve been you.

    – Adi versus Fourie. No contest guys. Adi all the way. And not because he is better but simply because he’s the incumbet and he either needs to play himself out or be played out. Neither have happened and so Adi my main man for a start against the Lions and rightfully so.

    – my final comments – Rory Kokott. You dumb %&*(c U n T in English). You are head and shoulders above every other South African rugby player, Fourie maybe apart. But you’re an idiot. Get your farking act together and it’s yours. But no, you think it’a a good idea to slap big men. Yes you martherfarking poefter, slapping a man probaly cost you a Bok cap against the Lions. One of my favourite players but one not to be found out of place as a non-speaking extra in Dumb and Dumber.

I dont think Steyn even deserves to be in the 22 let alone the starting side.
He started the season well but when Ruan got injured he suffered at Flyhalf and now he is moving overseas.
I think Kirschner was the top fullback in the S14 and should really feel unlucky.
As for Ricki’s selection. Come on we all know he has got what it takes and if he needs to be dropped because of form then Burger and Bismarck also dont deserve to be there…

    not sure i fully agree

steyn firstly is said to be fit again , in my eyes has always beena full back / come center NOT A FLYHALF
was playing out of position for most of super 14 so we judge his play on what??

when he last played for the boks he was very good so why should he not play ???

lastly it is not certain he is leaving , and untill he is and its 100 % so he should be treated like any other player

just because press have itchy arses and wanna sensationalise doesnt me they are always corect

we need his this young star…

back to Kirchner… i dont agree that he has been brilliant all season and he was average to say the least, around the last 5 to 6 games he lifted his game and yes is now playing brilliant rugby
halfway through the super 14 even bulls supporters were crying for tiger mangweni to be the full back

stefan terrablanche has had 2 brilliant seasons with one stuff up game against the saders this yeat , so why isnt he mentionedor even a thought ???
other then him ludick of the lions has been good all year and we dont see him in the bok squad ??

i had ludick in my group to be honest ahead of rose , but id still play steyn and nurture kirchner into the team

  • Two ommisions form the main squad – Kirchner. Best Fullback on display. You guys punting Stefan are on drugs. He was average to very poor and from what i saw of the last few hgames was instrumental on costing you your tournament. He kicks and chases more than Jantjies.

I would have liked to have seen Brussouw in the Test squad as back up to Schalla as he hasn’t been great this season. Maybe the green will serve him better than the dark blue.

I also would have liked to have seen am stoked Dewald Potgieter is in the emerging boks. Its a toss up between him and Deysel at the moment for a long term replacement for Juan Smith

Ricky is very lucky to be in the squad but the reality is Fourie is going to play the majority of all three tests.

  • Quick question.. where is Kockett? Any ideas why he wont be in the emerging squad?

I reckon Ndungane for fullback, he played there for the sharks a while ago and didn’t do too badly. Otherwise, last choice would be Morne at 15, his drops can milk the Lions!

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 73) : Dont think his discipline does him any favours for Bok consideration 😕

  • @Rahul (Comment 74) : correct… nor his selfish tendencies. A pity, but we will learn a lot about the character of the man now. Let’s see how he reacts to this
