Ireland flanker Stephen Ferris will be replaced by Welshman Ryan Jones for the rest of the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa after injuring his knee, coach Ian McGeechan said on Tuesday.

Neil Maidment reports on IOL:

A scan confirmed that Ferris had torn ligaments in his right knee during training on Monday and he would need a four to six week recovery period.

“Ryan is on the standby reserve list and of course has been playing for Wales over the past few weeks in the USA and Canada,” McGeechan said.

“He’ll fit right in as he knows a lot of the players and of course he was a Lions replacement on the 2005 tour to New Zealand.”

Wales captain Jones is due to arrive in South Africa on Thursday.

“I am delighted to have received this call-up,” said Jones. “Obviously it’s disappointing for Stephen who is a superb player and I wish him a quick and full recovery from his injury.”
